You don’t need to protect your body from everything.

You need to prepare it for what you ask it to do.

When you’ve experienced back pain, it’s easy to fall into the mindset of:

“I need to avoid anything that might hurt me.”

I know because I lived that way for years.

But I eventually realised that avoiding movement wasn’t giving me confidence.

Building capacity did.

I started with the foundations.

Understanding how I moved.

Building control.

Developing strength.

Gradually increasing load and challenge.

Then something changed.

The things I had once been afraid of started becoming normal again.

Lifting.

Training.

Playing with my kids.

DIY.

Moving without constantly thinking about my back.

That’s what capacity can give you.

It’s not just about getting stronger.

It’s about giving your body more options, more adaptability and more confidence.

That’s why my coaching follows:

ASSESS → RESET → STRENGTHEN → PERFORM

Start where you are.

Build from there.

You don’t need to wait until you’re “fixed” to start becoming more capable.

👇 What would you do if you trusted your body more?

There is no single “perfect” way to lift.

If you’ve experienced back pain, you’ve probably been given a list of rules:

“Keep your back straight.”

“Bend your knees.”

“Brace your core.”

“Never lift like that.”

And while technique and good movement strategies can be useful, believing there is one perfect way to move can sometimes create something else…

Fear.

Because real life isn’t predictable.

You won’t always lift from the perfect height.

You won’t always have perfect footing.

You won’t always have time to think about every part of your technique.

And that’s okay.

Your body is designed to adapt to different positions, movements and loads.

That doesn’t mean ignoring pain or throwing technique out the window.

It means moving beyond:

“What’s the perfect way to do this?”

and asking:

“What does my body need to become capable of doing this?”

That’s where I start with coaching.

ASSESS → RESET → STRENGTHEN → PERFORM

Build the foundations.

Develop capacity.

Progress gradually.

Build confidence.

Because the goal isn’t to make you terrified of getting your technique wrong.

The goal is to give you more movement options and the confidence to use them.

You don’t need perfect movement.

You need a body capable of handling imperfect movement.

Have you ever been taught a “correct” way to lift that actually made you more afraid to move?

Your back pain might not actually be a “back problem.”

When your back hurts, it’s natural to focus on the painful area.

But movement doesn’t happen in isolation.

Your mobility, strength, control, coordination, load tolerance and previous experiences can all influence how you move and how your body responds.

That’s why I don’t just want to know:

“Where does it hurt?”

I want to understand:

“Why might you be moving the way you are?”

Two people can experience back pain and have completely different movement limitations, strengths, experiences and needs.

So the approach shouldn’t always be:

“Here’s an exercise for your back.”

It should start with understanding you.

That’s why my coaching approach begins with:

ASSESS → RESET → STRENGTHEN → PERFORM

Understand how you move.

Address what needs attention.

Build capacity and resilience.

Then progress towards the things you actually want to do.

Because it’s not about finding a perfect movement.

It’s about understanding YOUR movement and building from there.

If you want to understand your movement, build your foundations and become more confident in what your body can do:

When your back hurts, do you focus on where it hurts or have you ever wondered why it might be happening?

You don’t need to move perfectly. You need to understand how YOU move.

For years, back pain made me think I had to be careful with movement.

I thought I needed to avoid certain things, protect my back and find the “perfect” way to move.

What changed everything was taking a different approach.

Instead of constantly asking:

“What movement is safe?”

I started asking:

“What does my body need to become more capable?”

That’s the philosophy behind my coaching.

ASSESS — understand how you move.
RESET — address what needs attention.
STRENGTHEN — build capacity and resilience.
PERFORM — progress towards what you actually want to do.

Because the goal isn’t to spend your life avoiding movements.

It’s to build the capacity and confidence to do the things that matter to you.

That might be lifting weights.

Playing with your kids.

Running.

Doing DIY.

Getting back to sport.

Or simply moving through everyday life without constantly worrying about your back.

It’s not about finding a perfect movement.

It’s about understanding YOUR movement and building from there.

If you’re ready to stop second-guessing your body and start building confidence in movement, DM me “MOVE” to find out more about Intrinsic Biomechanics Coaching.

👇 And tell me:

What movement do you wish you felt more confident doing?

For years, I thought I had to be careful with my back.

I was scared that the wrong movement, the wrong lift, or simply doing too much would set it off again.

And when you live with that fear for long enough, it starts changing your life.

You stop lifting.
You stop exercising.
You think twice about playing with your kids.
You become cautious about everyday things.

I know that feeling because I lived it.

Over the last 10 years, I’ve dedicated myself to understanding biomechanics, movement, strength and my own body and I’m now a qualified PT & Biomechanics Coach.

That knowledge completely changed my relationship with movement.

I didn’t become confident because I learned how to avoid movement.

I became confident because I learned how to move.

I still train.
I still build strength.
I still work on reducing injury risk.

But I no longer live in fear of my back.

And honestly, that freedom has been one of the biggest changes in my life.

Now, through Intrinsic Biomechanics Coaching, I help others develop a better understanding of their movement, build capacity and become more confident in what their body can do.

Because you shouldn’t have to spend your life avoiding the things you enjoy because you’re afraid of hurting yourself.

You can learn to move with confidence.

Huge shoutout to my client first season transitioning from rugby to American football and he’s already picked up Rookie MVP .. We started with a full biomechanics assessment, identified his weak links, and built a 10‑week programme around speed, movement quality, robustness and positional demands. When you fix the right problems, performance follows.

Seven months from turning 50, and I’m still lifting heavy.

But the biggest change isn’t the weight on the bar it’s how I move.

When I was younger, I thought training harder meant better results. I skipped the basics, ignored mobility, and chased workouts that my body wasn’t ready for. By my late 30s, I was diagnosed with a spine that had the wear and tear of a 65-year-old.

That diagnosis changed everything.

I found the right coach, learned biomechanics, improved my mobility, and started training with longevity in mind not just performance.

Today, I move better than ever, have no back issues, and I’m still doing what I love.

The goal isn’t to be the strongest person in the gym today. It’s to still be strong, capable, and pain-free in 10, 20, and 30 years’ time.

If you’re struggling with aches, pains, or feeling like your body is holding you back, don’t give up on training. Learn to move better, and your body will thank you for it.

Comment “LONGEVITY” if you’re ready to build a body that’s strong for life.
