Boroughmuir 2s vs Watsonians Colts 2 - Match Report

P IS FOR POSITIVITY
Another bright sunny day greeted us, and we were determined to secure a well earned win. We were approaching the end of the season with very little to show for it. Our faithful supporters were out in force and we owed it to them to perform. Coach Carole encouraged us to concentrate on all the Ps possession, passing and points!

P IS FOR PRESSURE
The game started and Boroughmuir hustled. We were determined not to let Watsonians have a sniff at this game. Both teams were languishing at the bottom of the table and fighting for survival in this league. Clare and Sharon played high and stretched Watsonians back into their quarter from the get go.

P IS FOR PEEEEEP
It became clear that there were more forces at play than simply the opposition. The familiar persecution of a low pitched whistle made an appearance early on the game. The Watsonian umpire was determined to have his say, even while straying beyond the boundaries of his jurisdiction. We battled on. It felt like the rulings against Boroughmuir were increasingly partisan

P IS FOR PERSEVERANCE
Aoifa (clear man of the match) and the rest of the defence played so well. Kirsty and Phoebe (runner ups) were brilliant at making solid block tackles and getting the ball up to our attack. Emma R and Carole T holding the middle and giving space to Sam out on the left (also runner up MOM). Sharon and Connie moved the ball around the D and wham Connie scores 1-0 Boroughmuir.

P IS FOR PRECISION
We continued to have more chances in the D. Clare had some lovely takes against the goalie and we won a spate of short corners. We did not capitalise on the first couple, but then Kirsty took her chance. A straight strike into the back of the net 2-0 Boroughmuir.

P IS FOR PIROUETTE
Watsonians came back at us. A couple of their forwards were like whirling dervishes, fast and hard to focus on. Despite holding them at arms length with Lorna saving initial shots and Amy and Carole C clearing the ball out, They spun past us 2-1 Boroughmuir.

P IS FOR PERPLEXED
So I did feel we were thwarted in this quarter. We had some chances with Emily switching the ball out to the wings and Morna breaking free. We won another short corner where the ball went into the net but the goal was ultimately disallowed. This and the constant interruption of the penny whistle, never being allowed to take a quick ball when we had been fouled against (the umpire requesting we wait for Watsonians to move away) did PMO (P Me Off). I think we got frustrated and we took our eye off the ball.

P IS FOR PE*******ON
Watsonians counter attacked and broke free quickly. They were dizzyingly fast and used the space to change direction and force their way through our defence. They scored again. 2-2.

P IS FOR PRESSED
Watsonians kept their burling technique, turning the ball and finding their players. We parried but they were capitalising on their momentum and scored again 3-2 watsonians.

P IS FOR PUNCTURE
When Watsonians won more short corners and applied the continual pressure to our defence, we just weren’t able to contain them. As the final goal was fired in, the sound of our hopes being punctured hissed around the pitch. 4-2 Watsonians full time.

P IS FOR POST PUMMELLING ANALYSIS
This score did not reflect the game, but how many times have you seen that written here? Our hopes of a decisive victory had been pillaged and it was gutting. Who knows if relegation lies in wait for us, or if we will get a reprieve, but what I know is that with only 2 games left we must parry, persevere and with a bit of persistence I’m sure we can pull off some points.

Boroughmuir 2s vs EHC 4s - Match Report

SPORTS SATURDAY
The day dawned bright and cold the kind of crisp morning that screams international rugby weekend. The sun rising to do battle with the frost that had formed on the pitch overnight emerged the victor. The pitch was playable, and conditions were perfect for a winning game of hockey.

GAME PLAN
Carole T’s team talk last week was delivered from behind a goalie’s mask in a “needs must” change of position. In it she requested we focus on the basics: keep the ball (KTB). This week, the brief was the same, but with chocolate on top. Think Scotland’s game plan, a focus on a strong middle, and create opportunities out wide.

TERRITORY
The game started with EHC passback and they immediately attempted to apply pressure. The strong Boroughmuir presence in the middle kept EHC from being able to play here, and Emily was able to get the ball up to Carole T (runner up man of the match) and Sharon who got some lovely shots on goal, more probing phases than outright tries, but promising territory all the same.

LINEOUT
The defence did not get an opportunity for boredom or indeed a break, with EHC wingers bringing the ball down either side with goals in their hearts. Thankfully Kirsten and Kirsty (also runner up man of the match) held firm at the sides, shutting down space like seasoned Six Nations centres and capitalising on the space in the wings, using Clare and Morna to drive Boroughmuir into an attacking position.

DROP KICK
Lorna was man-of-the-match-worthy in her skilful saves that would’ve had the Murrayfield crowd on their feet, however EHC did not give up and kept at it. A rapid break down our right, a sharp cut back into the D where an attacker pounced and scored 1-0 EHC

HELD UP
We did have chances and won a couple of short corners thanks to Carole T’s impressive stick skills. Emma C and Phoebe worked well together getting the ball across the D where Sharon and Clare took their chances where they could. Plenty of phases, just missing that final touchdown.

ON THE BREAK
EHC were unfortunately very fast on the break, and although the team schlepped back, and Amy, Carole C and Heather intercepted many many balls, EHC managed to squeak one past us again 2-0 EHC.

POST MATCH ANALYSIS
Unfortunately although we had the plucky underdog vibe we did not get the results that Scotland and Italy achieved at the weekend. I feel that victory for us is just round the corner and am hopeful for the last few matches in the league. 💪

Boroughmuir 2s vs Edinburgh Uni 9s - Match Report

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
Bounty was the sweetie of the week and the message was (like a coconut) don’t drop until we are ready. All hands on deck, hustle and rush the opposition, but resist pressure to pass when there is no available option. Sharon was to be on the right, and (mutinously) I was playing port side.

AHOY ME HEARTIES
And we had plenty of heart, Sharon (runner up for man of the match) was brilliant, speeding up the right, intercepting passes and then offloading to Connie and Sam who applied the squeeze. Emily and EmmaAARR (said in gruff pirate tones) were strong in the middle, tackling and marking, transferring to Carole T who worked with Beth, sailing up the left. Ultimately coaxing the ball into the D where Sharon had a great opportunity on goal and Uni in panicked desperation gave away a penalty.

BOUNTIFUL
Brave Kirsty stepped up to take the penalty flick. Coolly composed and with her eye on the treasure, she struck. X marks the spot, and the ball was fired beautifully into the back of the net, 1-0 to Boroughmuir.

(EYE) PATCHY
The next two quarters were a slog. Uni were fighting hard determined to get one back. Carole C, ever solid in the middle, Heather and Beth strong on the wings, ensuring that the tackles were happening outside the circle, damage control at its most clinical. When the ball did get fired across the D, Aoifa and Amy pounced, with impeccable timing, getting it up to EmmaAARR, and then onto Sam, hungry for the next chance.

PIRACY
The star of the game once again was Lorna, clear man of the match both from the umpire’s point of view and the team. Goalie extraordinaire she saved countless goals, leaping, diving and rolling like a breakdancing buccaneer. The short corners came thick and fast (clearly a Uni strategy) and time and time again she forced Uni to walk the plank with saves of pure brilliance.

AARRR-GH
But as every pirate knows, the enemy rarely gives up the treasure without a final fight. Uni pushed and pushed, determined to prise open our chest of gold, and eventually one slipped past our defences. A gut‑punch worse than finding the rum barrel empty 1-1 Full time.

POST MATCH ANALYSIS
This was quite a kick in the coconuts, given we had been winning for most of the game and then conceded a goal in the last quarter. However a point is still a point, and we’re “bounty” win next time. Well done crew 🏴‍☠️

Boroughmuir 2s vs Dunfermline Carnegie 2s Match Report

PARTY RING
Another year and another sweet bite to analyse and find a winning metaphor to draw out our best play. Coach Carole brought out a wee, rather battered packet (perhaps in the bag since last week’s cancelled game?) of mini party rings, a delicious reminder of childhood parties and of a time when a sugar high and a load of e-numbers was the only self respecting way to mark the passing of the years. We tried to work out Carole’s metaphoric angle, and there were a couple of comments about partying when we win, but the key theme here was circle, and consistency (the circle being the most stable shape in 2 dimensions).

RING IN THE NEW YEAR
First game of 2026, and we were keen for another win against the team that we had defeated at home way back in 2025. We were determined to be pacy, quick to apply pressure, circle back and mark when required. Lorna (clear man of the match) was brilliant at keeping us right, and attracted admiring comments from the opposition on her skill and communication as she parried rapid fire attempts on goal.

ALARM BELLS RINGING
We thought we would have the run on them, however Dunfermline turned out to be pretty speedy themselves. Despite Amy matching their speed head on (in an awe inspiring comeback), and making some magnificent tackles, passing to Emma R who sent balls wide to wing-footed Sharon (acceleration 2nd to none), Dunfermline brought the fight back to us and wore us down. Guttingly they managed to sneak the ball past the defence and at the end of the quarter it was 1-0 Dunfermline.

RINGS A BELL
we often concede a goal just before the end of a quarter, and so it was a familiar if disheartening feeling. We did not however let our heads go down and we fought. The defence were brilliant, Carole C sure and strong in the middle, Heather and Beth in the wings outmanoeuvring the Dunfermline attack, and feeding the midfield valiantly. We were a little rusty with first touches, but we kept going back and the second and third touches weren’t too shabby at all. Lovely to see some moves practised at training, driving, passing and running and long shots across the D. Emma R and Carole T had some beautiful one twos up the pitch, opening up to Isla and Emma C who drove forward powerfully,
never giving up and leaving Dunfermline spinning.

RUN RINGS AROUND
The pressure was definitely building against the Dunfermline defence, however pressure does not equal points. We were starting to win some short corners and Kirsty took aim and fired her deadly hit towards the goal, unfortunately the goalie pulled it out of the bag and saved our attempts. Boroughmuir kept at it, and Emily took her chance in open play, again, in an elegant echo of our training exercise she sent the ball into the D, ignoring the plethora of players who dived to scuff it, Sam coolly sent it goalwards, 1-1

THROWING OUR HAT IN THE RING
We were not here for a draw, and despite Dunfermline turning up the heat (the ring on the hob springs to mind) we did not boil over or combust. The midfield marked, and despite our depleted Christmas fitness, we dug deep and drew on Boroughmuir grittiness. It paid off, the ball turned over and Phoebe fired the ball up the field, it was turned over, but back to Carole T, she hit it into the D (the set piece from training but not Carole’s typical manoeuvre), mayhem ensued and fast forwards swarmed. We were in the ring and Dunfermline were on the ropes. Carole T again a fabulous feint, out to me, back into the D and Sam caught the perfect touch and knocked it into the goal. 2-1 to Boroughmuir.

RING FENCE
Final minutes were fraught. Dunfermline now had everything to play for and nothing to lose. We maintained our concentration. Beth’s composure at the end was as focussed as Gollum’s as he muttered “my precious” to the one ring to rule them all. She and Amy passed back and forth drawing the attackers in such a way to get the ball out and back in attack. A short corner for us in the last 90 seconds did not unfortunately yield another goal, rather it was a final sprint down the pitch as Dunfermline went hard for a last gasp attempt. We held them off. 2-1 full time. Partaaayyy 🎉

POST MATCH ANALYSIS
We kept up the good fight and were close to winning another goal at the end. However this game’s result could have been very different if Lorna (saving all the goals) and Sam (scoring the 2 goals) had not been on epic form. I also think that this week’s training exercises put us in a strong position, it was great practise for both defence and attackers and I saw this shine through in everyone’s play. Let’s hope that this win will ring the changes for Boroughmuir 2s current form and we can push up the table in the 2nd half of the season. Please note the team photo below is a nod to The Traitors on finale week, rather than the horror film The Ring!
