Garth’s Asatavakrasana pop-up class
Angus Keith, one of the students who participated in Garth’s Astavakrasana class, did some research on the name of this pose. Here’s what he found out:
“Astavakrasana is named after the sage Astavakra, who was said to be bent in eight places yet became a renowned spiritual teacher. The pose is a reminder that yoga values understanding and perseverance above physical perfection.”

We were all delighted to have Garth back at EIYC, 15 years after he last taught here. What an energetic and exciting class it was! Working towards Astavakrasana is no easy feat, but Garth guided us with such joy and enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see the whole class having so much fun!

The annual Convention came to an end, but there is so much to digest afterwards!
“Please ask silly questions — that way you make service to your friends that are too shy to ask them”.
“Mind is like a baby: if you leave it unattended, it starts to produce noise in anxiety. Be attentive to yourself”.
Thank you Birjoo for so many wise words we heard over this weekend!

There is no word that can describe how sad we are. Bobby was a great teacher, fantastic practitioner, and a dear friend to many of us. Please rest in peace. Deepest condolences to her family. 🙏

Today’s informal practice and exchange of learning centred on arm and elbow balance in the middle of the room and then upright backarch and dropping down from Tadasana onto a wall. Studying the balance between the work of the upper chest and arms and the inner legs and the hip joints. Practising arm and elbow balance away from the wall helps you connect to the quiet strength of the arms and shoulders when you feel how the release of the outer shoulders brings the elongation of the upper thoracic spine and the cervical spine, making the shoulder blades elongate and move into the upper rib cage. Then dropping back we studied how to create length in the hip joints and lower abdomen, releasing the outer hips and getting that glorious extension of the inner legs to counter the backward curve of the spine. Another fun and enlightening afternoon – a great antidote to post election blues – thanks again to everyone!
