Did you know that 26th April is Stop Food Waste Day?
Let’s focus for one moment on the food we eat at our dinner table and store in our fridge. Let’s also remember the food we throw everyday into the bin because we have cooked too much of it or have not planned well our shopping list. April 26th, 2024 will bring awareness to this facet of our lives with Stop Food Waste Awareness Day. This awareness day brings attention to the value of our food at a global level and at its potential daily waste especially in our part of the world where food abounds. Let’s reflect together on our habits around eating and consuming food and also on how we can make eating and disposing of food more sustainable. Together we can make small acts of love to improve our environment and our health at a personal and global level.
Make sure this day is celebrated with sensitivity:
- Compost all organic food either in your garden compost bin or dispose of it into an organic waste council bin;
- Educate your family and children regarding this important issue;
- Plan your shopping list and don’t buy things you won’t need or eat. You can always buy and freeze;
- Donate to a foodbank for those who are in need in your community;
- Use leftovers to make a soup or a salad for the next meal. Or to make a good home-made stock;
- Learn new ways of preserving or storing food.
- Always buy seasonable foods.
Food is a value, not a commodity!
Become aware of your food intolerances so you do not buy foods you should not eat to improve your immune system and digestive health.

Chicory Latte
Ingredients (serves 2):
400 ml oats, almond or wholemeal rice milk
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 pinch of ground clove
1 teaspoon chicory soluble coffee
maple syrup or agave syrup to sweeten (optional)
Method:
- Warm up the milk in a small pan and take it off the fire before boiling point.
- Wisk the milk in a jug until frothy.
- add the spices and the coffee and whisk more.
- sweeten the latte with a small amount of maple or agave syrup (coconut milk and rice milk are already naturally sweet).
You can sprinkle the top of the milk with ground cinnamon or cloves, or bitter cocoa, to taste.
