You may recognise Rosie’s story.

Rosie was based in the Angus Glens, where she sadly contracted louping ill.

Harriett has done a fantastic job of raising awareness of this dreadful disease and sharing Rosie’s story, despite how difficult the situation has been.

A larder is essentially a large walk-in fridge used for storing deer and game birds, before they are collected by a local game dealer.

They provide a clean, secure and temperature-controlled environment, ensuring high standards of hygiene, food safety and traceability are maintained from the field to the food chain.

Larders play an important role in responsible game management, allowing trained staff to handle and store wild game correctly before it is processed and distributed.

🪤 Legal Traps
You may come across approved traps used as part of legal predator management on the moor.

Everyone who sets and checks these traps are trained and must follow legal standards for their use, inspection and welfare.

It is a criminal offence to tamper with, interfere with or damage a legally set trap. If you come across one, please leave it undisturbed and keep dogs under close control in the area.

🏡 Scottish Housing Day 2026

Estates across the Angus Glens Moorland Group provide housing for keepers, shepherds and their families, helping to sustain rural populations and local services in remote areas.

In a rural area where affordable housing is difficult to find, this allows families to settle and make up the small, local school populations which often struggle to stay at sustainable numbers.

🔥🌿 Today marks the start of the Muirburn
season.

It’s earlier than previous years due to the ‘Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024’.

When you’re next out on the hills, remember that smoke may be from planned muirburn.

Estates carrying out controlled burns notify Fire Control in advance, helping prevent unnecessary call-outs and ensuring fire brigade resources aren’t wasted on planned activity.

🐝 Bee Hives
Many moors are home to bee hives run by local beekeepers and businesses. As heather comes into flower, the moor provides an important source of nectar, producing the distinctive, rich-flavoured heather honey sold across Scotland.

💦 Man-made Wet Patches & Water Troughs

Across many moors, small scrapes, ponds, wet flushes and water troughs are created to provide valuable water sources, particularly during dry summer periods.

These areas support a wide range of wildlife by providing drinking water and creating feeding and breeding habitat for insects, amphibians and many other species.

It’s a simple yet effective way to support biodiversity on the moor, helping wildlife during periods of dry weather when natural water sources may be limited.

🪨 Grouse Butt

What is a grouse butt?
A grouse butt is a small, concealed shelter used by people taking part in a driven grouse shoot. They are created with a lot of skill and provide cover while allowing grouse to fly naturally over the line.

Butts can be built in a variety of ways, from traditional dry stone to timber, depending on the landscape and estate.

They are usually arranged in lines of around 10 butts, with careful spacing between each one. Deciding where those lines are placed is a skilled job, taking into account the terrain, wind direction and the natural flight lines of wild grouse.

Today marks the first home game of the season for Strathmore Rugby Club! 🏉

A great opportunity to highlight the partnership between Strathmore and the Angus Glens Moorland Group, bringing locally sourced game meat and sport together. 🥩🏉

So far, over 2,000 meals have been served through the club’s superb hospitality.

We can’t wait to see that number grow after yet another season.
