Dale and Ryall Triumph on the Taunton!
The Taunton Rally returned to its home lanes for 2026 around the Blackdown Hills and Devils Triangle, recently an areas that’s been used by the Bagger Rally. The lanes are known to be tight and technical with plenty of mud, slots, triangles and sections not as map (NAM).
31 crews were on the entry list to tackle the 115 mile route which included a couple miles of whites. 29 crews started the event from The Beambridge Inn just outside of Wellington. Noise and scrutineering were held at Formula Cars just the other side of Wellington with fuel and trailer park all readily available between the two.
MTC0 came around at 22:30 and crews started to collect their plotting instructions which consisted of a mixture of marked maps and grid references as well as a few sheets of NAM junctions.
Midnight soon came around and crews were lining up for the start of the first section on Wrangway Hill. Slot right at the hairpin at the top of the hill and then immediately left to drop down to a loop around as well as a white at Culm Davy for the first time control (TC) and couple passage checks (PC). Over the river Culm via the humpback bridge and across the B3391 to another PC on Regency House white. A couple crews missed the slot onto the white and ended up heading into the next time control from the wrong direction, the correct route looping around Lickham Bottom. Skirting around Hackpen Hill and Foxhill the route then crossed the river three times including two fords before heading up Sheldon Hill and along Sheldon White, which is a yellow on the map, but has been very much a white for several years! The finish control soon arrived towards the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club for the end of the first section.
Will Jefferis and Toby Sweetland in the little Nissan Micra were the top championship crew and second overall at the end of the first section dropping 1:16 with Elliott Dale and Charlotte Ryall just a second behind in their Mk1 Es**rt and Mark Butler and Paul Hoad in fourth in the bright yellow BMW on 2:27. Matt Baker and Sukie Read were leading the novice charge in their 205 GTi dropping 5:50 with Mark Thorburn just behind in his Satria GTi with Simon Denman in the navigators seat, they were on 6:31. Stephen Luscombe and Andrew Joll rounded off the top three novices in the championship in their Citroen C2 dropping 7:47.
Some top runners were unfortunately out early on in the event, Phillip and Edward Luxton having gear linkage issues on Culm Davy White and also Evan Shepherd and Byron Jones having electrical issues only a handful of miles into the event. Adrian Beer and Nathan Coles MG ZR head gasket went and Jamie Raymond also dropped out in his lovely Mk2 Es**rt.
A neutral section took crews down the hill from Dunkeswell to the start of section 2 just outside of Honiton near Langford Bridge. Around Dumpton Hill and through the tricky slot at Wick, crews headed past Hillside, Shelvin and up across the jumps on Greenway Lane to the first time control. Along Luppitt Common and onto Gully Lane for the next time control before a loop around Riggles Cross to collect a PC before heading up to Smeatharpe. Slotting onto the airfield collecting a PC at the barn and then straight down to the hairpin right and back to the runway crossroads for the next PC. A handful of the drift and drag racers were camping on the airfield after the event during the day, so they enjoyed the extra bit of motorsport as the crews then weaved themselves through a rubble and silage pit for another PC before heading back onto the main road. Crews were not on the main road for long before slotting right onto another old part of the airfield at the top of Buckeshayes farm, running along the concrete parallel to the main road, around a row of cones and back onto the yellow and another time control at Newhouse Church. Along Beacon Hill to the NAM triangle which drops steeply downhill into a hairpin right and straight into another triangle for a PC. Down to Twistgates and through the narrow lanes below the A303, a difficult area to get right, before two triangles to bring crews to the finish of section 2.
Ashley Rice and Trevor Disney were quickest championship contenders in their Mini dropping 3:07. Butler was close behind dropping 3:24, local lanes for him, with Dale/Ryall only 13 seconds behind, moving them up to the leading championship crew.
Baker/Read were top novice crew again dropping 11:26 with Simon Fuidge second who was sat alongside Paul Boxall in a MG ZR on 12:47 and Thorburn third dropping 15:43 after missing a RC.
Crews headed to the third section of the night which looked to be longer than the previous two. Following the A30 through Yarcombe crews found the start on James Lane. Around the triangle on Bewley Down and down Money Pitt Lane to the first control. Through Godworthy to a sensibly placed PC to stop people overshooting the 90 right and sliding down the moor. It was still tricky dropping down the hill though being greasy in places on the gated road. Past Goldman’s and around the top of the hill to Webble Green and down to the Ford at the river Yarty, usually a popular spot for photos but maybe a little rough for large splashes this year. Up the hill to the Pound triangle which always catches crews out. Steep uphill into a tight hairpin left with a step on the inside, not all bumpers made it… Around the northern edge of Rower Hill through several tight corners before turning left onto the wide yellow and the fast downhill to a triangle at the bottom. Crews climbed steeply up Witch Lane which has deteriorated a lot over recent years and is worse than some whites, into a TC at the end. Down the hill to Longbridge with a nasty little kicker to catch some crews out before the slot 90 right at the crossroads. Following the river Yarty again below where crews were 20 minutes previously. Looping around the tight Mill Lane and over Case Bridge before heading towards Stockland and up to Rodway Cross for another time control. Still going, crews then dropped down to the 90 left at Ford and up the hill the other side near Shore Bottom. Down to Boniford Cross and back up to Heathstock to head up the hill through the NAM hairpins and along the long run across the top of Dalwood. At the end of the road it was left to head back up the valley towards Stockland again before the double triangles at Beckford Bridge, across the Yarty once more and back down the valley to finish the section on the B3261 at the Isle of Man.
Crews now had the chance to refuel and catch up some time at the fuel station in Kilmington. Rice/Disney were quickest again dropping just three minutes and moving them up to the lead of the event overall on 8:35. Phil Harris and Liam Burns were second quickest dropping 3:28 in their Perodua Myvi which also moved them up to second overall at fuel with Kevin Wills and Rhys Williams in their 206 third quickest dropping 4:12.
Quickest novice from the championship was Thorburn dropping 11:22 moving him up to second novice on the event and second in regards to the championship, first was being held by Fuidge who was only 14 seconds behind. Baker/Read rounded off the top three dropping 17:43.
Jefferis/Sweetland dropped out of the event before fuel due to Sweetland not feeling his best, a illness he had before and was hoping to power through. Luscombe/Joll also unfortunately didn’t make it this far on the event.
After filling with fuel crews headed through Axminster towards Chard to the start of section four on Brockhole Lane, South Chard. Along Burridge Common and down to Hook along a lane which just seems to be falling away into the ground. Looping around to Ridge and back to Cotley to pass the top of Burridge Common again before heading across to Red Post and Cock-Crowing Stone. A quick section then took crews towards Ferne Animal Sanctuary before looping around the mapped triangle and down to the A30 at Crawley. Heading North East on the main road before the twisty lane down to Howley and back up to the main road. Heading down to Whitestaunton crews then headed back up the hill around Northay and down to the bottom of Cinder Hill. Under the A303 at Marsh and around Marsh Hairpin and up to Brown Down. A short trip along the main road before dropping down through the rough forests damaged road to Watchford Triangle, across the common and through the ford to Knacker’s Hole. A loop around the east of Churchinford then looped crews back up to Brown Down for the finish of section 4.
Dale/Ryall were quickest dropping 3:45 with Rice/Disney second dropping 4:10 to hold onto the lead. Taunton MC pairing Luke Quinell & Kayleigh Di**le were third quickest in their Ford Puma dropping 4:24.
Thorburn was the quickest novice dropping 10:17 which also moved him up to leading novice. Fuidge was second quickest championship novice dropping 12:28 with Tommy Coles and Jade Ewings third in their Puma picking up 57:34 after cutting round and picking up some hefty time penalties.
Baker/Read unfortunately dropped out of the event after losing a wheel on this section. A shame after a good battle at the front of the class for them.
Straight into section five with no neutral crews were kept on their toes! Along Brown Down and down into the valley between Bishopswood and Birchwood and looping around the lovely NAM road the follows the river below Fyfett. Picking up a TC at the top of Otterford Lakes and then through Otterford itself. Hunter’s Lodge then took crews to another TC before looping towards Churchstanton and through Willand, past Munty and around the always muddy Valentines Farm to head into the next time control and the end of section five.
Nine crews were clean including Michael Lashbrook & Jacob Williams in their Mini Cooper S and Simon Heywood & Andrew Axford in their Honda Civic.
Coles/Ewings were the quickest novice crew dropping just 3 minutes with Thorburn and Fuidge both missing a time control dropping 30:00 and 33:00 respectively in second and third.
Straight into section six of the event, the last one of the night. Around Bolham Water hairpin and up to Gorwell hairpin before dropping down to the Madford valley and around the edge of Hemyock. Following the river Culm crews then headed up Ridgewood Hill via a white to get the correct approach for the TC. Along Bolham Hill before dropping back down into the valley again and through the ford at the bottom of Brimley Hill. Around the hairpin just before Churchstanton which had some interesting tyre marks the day after before dropping back down into the valley and up Ring Down to the final time control. Unfortunately, a tree blocking the final little loop of the event around Burnworthy brought the event to a finish just one time control early.
Dale/Ryall were quickest through the last section dropping 1:53 with Butler second on 2:44 and both Quinnell/Di**le and Lashbrook/Williams both third on 3:22. Thorburn was the quickest novice dropping 5:24 which was a top 10 section time as well. Fuidge was second dropping 6:05 with Coles/Ewings third dropping 8:50.
A short trip along the top of the Blackdown Hills took the crews to the Holman Clavel Inn for a well deserved breakfast and for some, a refreshing pint! MTC1.uk soon worked out the results while everyone tucked into one of the biggest and best rally breakfasts ever. The final section of the event really stirred up the order… Rice/Disney dropped over four minutes with a wrong plot, losing them the lead of the event and dropping them down to third overall at the end. Wills/Williams also dropped the offside into a ditch on the final triangle, dropping 10 minutes over the whole section, dropping them out of the top four back to sixth.
Once all of the results were calculated Dale/Ryalls consistent top times came to fruition at the end of the night, winning the event by over three minutes! Mark Butler placed second and top Semi-Expert dropping 18:40 over the whole night with Rice/Disney third behind them by just five seconds. Mark Thorburn piloted his Satria to win the novice class and come 14th overall, almost half an hour ahead of second novices! Final championship contender results were as follows.
