The Topsham midweek friendly side welcomed their latest visitors this week, hosting the friendly side “Wednesday” — despite the small confusion of the fixture being played on a Tuesday!

After losing the toss, Topsham were asked to take the field. Captain Terry Rudge decided to open the bowling with Andy Preece and Rohan Chowtee, and both quickly justified the decision with disciplined spells against Wednesday’s overseas batsman and fellow opener.

B Lawrence offered a couple of difficult chances before Rohan Chowtee finally got his reward, nicking him off to a spectacular overhead slip catch from Jacob Taylor, the big friendly giant himself.

From there, 23-1 quickly became 43-5, as Rohan Anthony ripped through the middle order with three quick wickets, supported by one for Faz. The fielding effort was equally impressive, with Matt Reeves taking three catches and the skipper Terry Rudge adding one of his own.

The wicket of K Gill was particularly pleasing for the captain, who moved himself to silly mid-on and was rewarded the very next ball as a chip landed straight into his hands.

Wednesday’s middle order showed plenty of spirit, though, combining some powerful down-the-ground hitting with determined running to rebuild their innings. Andy Preece returned to pick up another wicket, and Topsham rotated through an impressive 10 bowlers as Wednesday finished on 183-9 — a very competitive total.

Topsham’s Chase

Topsham opened the batting with Jacob Taylor and Neil “Shillers” Shillabeer, and both immediately put the pressure back on the visitors, racing to 30 before retiring. JT was particularly destructive, smashing 35 from just 18 balls.

Andy Shields came in at number three and continued the momentum, retiring after a fluent 33. Fresh from a Saturday half-century, Matt Reeves carried on his excellent form, bludgeoning 27 from 19 balls, including one enormous six, before becoming Wednesday’s first wicket with the score on 133-1.

Then came a moment of pure midweek cricket chaos.

Derek Sivyer and Terry Rudge found themselves involved in a calamity of a run-out, with the captain stranded in the middle to register his fourth duck in five games. Derek soon followed him back to the shed, leaving the two Rohans to guide Topsham home.

With 30 needed from the final four overs, Rohan Chowtee and Rohan Anthony calmly chipped away, leaving Topsham needing just 15 from the final six balls.

Rohan C wasted no time, smashing the first ball of the over for six down the ground, followed by a fortunate boundary to leave Topsham needing five from four balls.

Some tight bowling and ambitious swings followed, leaving Topsham requiring two from two. A quick single became two after Rohan Anthony inadvertently blocked the wicketkeeper, only for Jamie Rose — who had an excellent game behind the stumps as umpire (and perhaps deserves consideration as a future career move!) — to call one short.

With one needed from the final ball, a dot ball followed, meaning scores finished tied.

For the second year running, Topsham found themselves heading into a super over — much to the frustration of captain Terry Rudge, who by this point was struggling to even see the pink ball in the approaching darkness!

Super Over Drama

Step forward the man, the myth, the legend… Jacob Taylor.

JT smashed 18 runs from the super over, helped by some enthusiastic running from his partner Matt Reeves, leaving Wednesday needing 19 for victory.

With the sun now firmly set, Rohan Anthony took the ball and delivered a sensational over, conceding just five runs.

Topsham secured victory!

An excellent game of cricket full of competitive spirit, big hitting, great fielding, and the usual dose of midweek chaos. A huge thank you to Wednesday for making the trip and contributing to a brilliant evening of cricket.

Topsham Tides Women’s Softball played a friendly last night against Budleigh Salterton. A return to site of our first ever festival just over a month ago.

A strong squad of 11 came up against Budleigh and Topsham fielded first. In 18 overs Budleigh scored 356/1 after some great running between the wickets. Tuesday picked up our wicket with a great caught behind by Lauren. Everyone fielded really well on their first time on a full size boundary, a great experience for things to come.

Topsham Tides batted well and mustered 316 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Ultimately coming up short but with lots of successes during the innings. The Tides learnt from the Budleigh team and took lots of quick singles to bolster their scoring options. Along with lots of boundaries and big hits which were unlucky not to reach the rope.

Player of the match goes to Tuesday for her wicket and 11 runs whilst batting. Her and Lauren made a great combination at the top of the order to get the innings off to a strong start.

The Tides are improving and learning with every game. With a busy August including training and 3 more games, everyone is really enjoying the journey through our debut season.

Thanks to Budleigh for being amazing hosts and good luck for the rest of the season. Topsham Tides are playing next at Thorverton on Thursday 13th August.

The second eleven, however, bounced back to form in style with their bowling attack pinning to just 87 runs with outstanding bowling performances from Irfan Rafiq and Ellis Smalley. Topsham only needed just over 12 overs to knock the visitors score off with skipper Matt Reeves taking 58 not out to seal the victory
