Following on from my 630 mile (680 mile) walk of the South West Coast Path I am setting off to walk from Lands End to John O Groats on 1st April 2028.
I am sure I will experience every weather imaginable. Including days where it rains all day, possibly for day after day.
So I need versatile clothing layers that can be added to or taken off.
So what about waterproofs? I have gone for RevolutionRace silence proshell 3L jacket and trousers. They are waterproof to 20,000 hydrostatic head and also breathable. Both jacket and trousers have taped seams and waterproof zippers but also additional ventilation zippers so that I do not become a boil in the bag kipper!
Nearer the time I will give updates on social media and you tube that you can follow.
Of course I will be raising money for a good cause and there can only be one that I can consider Hospiscare
Best wishes
Mike

Moggans I have frozen my socks!
The great thing about having 4 years to plan my walk from Lands End to John O Groats is that I can get my equipment and clothing perfect.
I chose Merino Wool walking socks for my 1,093 mile walk. I purchased one pair of Stravaiger hiking socks from Moggans (made in Scotland) and then tried them and they were great so I purchased another two pairs, giving me 3 pairs for my walk, wear one, wash one, one spare.
Clothes moths like Merino Wool for their dinner so I have placed each pair in a sealed plastic bag, froze them in the freezer ( I was busted by my wife who found them) and now they can be safely stored until it’s time to set off on 1st April 2028

Last Saturday I was invited by the amazing team at Tesco Exmouth to do a bucket collection to raise monies for Hospiscare as a result of my 630 mile South West Coast Path walk that I am starting in just two weeks time.
I am delighted to report that the collection raised £467.72 for Hospiscare due to the kindness of the people of Exmouth at Tesco.
If you would like to add to this total ( or even match it 🤣) then just scan to QR code to go to my just giving page.

What will I be wearing on my 630 mile South West Coast Path walk?
Last time I did this walk I was lucky to discover a pair of Berghaus walking shoes that worked extremely well for me. These have now done around 1,000 miles of walking and although tatty they are still waterproof! So I have purchased an identical pair for my walk which I will break in of course. Also on my feet will be Marino wool walking socks.
I will wear lightweight walking trousers which will be tucked into my socks, which although looks ridiculous it gives some protection from ticks, although ticks do not bother me there is a very slight risk of catching Lyme Disease which I would not want. The trousers also have a handy side pocket with a flap for my phone so I can easily take lots of photos.
As the walk is in summer the temperature could vary between chilly nights camping to baking heat in August sun, so the answer is layers that can be added or removed. The first layer is a lightweight long sleeved ( sunburn) Marino Wool base layer which gives the all important wicking action which will help keep me cool, then a cotton shirt, a microfibre fleece if needed, then a lightweight waterproof walking jacket, if needed.
On my head is the vital wide brimmed sun hat.
I also have a lightweight ordinary shirt and shorts to wear to the pub in the evening after a shower at the various campsites so I won’t be smelly! Many campsites have a washing machine or hand wash facilities to keep my daytime kit fresh.
Please visit my just giving page to support Hospiscare, thank you.

My training for my 630 mile South West Coast Path walk involves me leaving home most mornings at 5am to walk for one and a half hours to tone the muscles in my legs and get generally fitter. Am I nuts? Please support Hospiscare on my just giving page. Thank you.
