My ancestors believed a person had a name, and that the name was a living part of them.

Not a label. The ren was one of the components of a soul, alongside the body and the shadow and the heart. And because it was alive, it could be sustained — every time someone spoke it aloud, the person was kept in existence. This is why they carved names into stone, and why erasing a name from a monument was the gravest thing you could do to someone. It was not vandalism. It was a second death.

I think we have kept the instinct and lost the language for it. We say someone's name at their funeral and feel something shift in the room. We know what it means to be called by the wrong name for years.

Whose name have you not said aloud in a long time?

My ancestors built an entire civilisation around a river that flooded.

Every year the Nile rose and covered the fields. Nothing could be planted. Nothing could be harvested. The work simply stopped — and the whole country stopped with it. They called it Akhet, the inundation, and it was not an interruption to the year. It was the first season of it.

They did not experience the flood as lost time. They understood that the silt left behind was the reason anything grew at all. The fallow months were not the absence of the harvest. They were its condition.

I think about this when people tell me, slightly ashamed, that they have had a season where nothing was produced. No launch, no progress, no visible movement. They speak about it as a gap in the record.

It may have been the silt.

What has your last fallow season left behind that you have not yet given it credit for?

My ancestors believed the heart was weighed.

Not at the end of a life as a single verdict, but as a way of living — the heart set against the feather of Ma'at, truth and right order, and the only question being whether it had grown heavy.

I used to read this as a story about judgement. I have stopped reading it that way. What strikes me now is that they chose the heart and not the mind. Not what you understood. Not what you achieved. What you carried.

And things make a heart heavy quietly. A resentment you have decided to keep. A small dishonesty you have stopped noticing. A version of yourself you present so often that you have forgotten it is a performance.

There is no ceremony required to attend to this. Only the willingness to ask, at the end of an ordinary day, what am I carrying that I did not set down — and is it mine to carry at all?

What has your heart been heavy with lately?

What happens when the data can’t give you the answer?

There comes a point in every visionary’s journey where the numbers aren’t clear, the path hasn’t been proven, and the market hasn’t caught up with the vision yet.

That’s where faith becomes part of the strategy.

Not blind faith.
Not ignoring the data.

But the conviction to:

• Gather the insight
• Build the systems
• Clarify the vision
• Move before certainty arrives
• Lead with conviction

Because sometimes the biggest breakthroughs begin before there’s evidence they’ll work.
