🌳SPOON CARVING WORKSHOP🌳
Slow down, warm your hands by the fire, and turn a fresh piece of green wood into something useful and personal. This spoon carving session is all about traditional bushcraft skills, good company, and taking time to work with your hands in a beautiful woodland setting.
We’ll start by selecting pollarded wood from the woodland, learning why this traditional management technique matters and how it provides ideal material for carving. Using an axe, you’ll safely split your wood, then settle in around the campfire to whittle your own bushcraft spoon.
Step by step guidance is given throughout, whether it’s your first time carving or you’ve had a go before.
The session runs from 1000 to 1300 in our 25 acre woodland camp. We meet in all weathers except high winds, so come prepared for the outdoors. A campfire will be burning and hot drinks are provided to keep you warm and comfortable while you carve.
All tools and materials are included. You’ll leave with your own hand-carved spoon, new skills, and a few hours properly spent outdoors.

We’re inviting home-educating families with young people of secondary school age to come and visit us for a calm, skill-focused open morning in the woods.
This session is simply an opportunity to see the site, meet us, and get a feel for how our home education woodland group runs. There is no expectation to join afterward; it’s about finding out whether our approach feels like the right fit for your young person.
Our groups are designed for teens who benefit from a quieter, calm learning environment, with an emphasis on practical skills, development, and learning at a comfortable pace. Sessions focus on bushcraft and outdoor skills, safe tool use, problem-solving, and working respectfully with others and the natural environment.
The open morning will take place on Thursday 29th from 09:30 to 11:00.
Parents are welcome to stay, ask questions, and observe how the session is held. Groups are small and intentionally calm, supporting focus, confidence, and meaningful learning.
If you’re exploring alternative, nature-based learning for a home-educated young person of secondary school age, we’d be very happy to welcome you. Book your free space at

Woodland folklore appears in almost every part of Britain. Stories like Robin Hood reflect a long tradition of forests as places of refuge and resilience, but in Cornwall our folklore is much older (Yes, we've had our experience with Pyskies!) Our relationship with woods goes way back.

Fire provides warmth, light and a sense of safety. Archaeologists believe humans have used controlled fire for over 400,000 years. Some habits run deep.

Firelighting isn’t about speed, it’s about setup. Studies show people learn practical skills faster when allowed to slow down and repeat tasks. Fire teaches patience better than words ever could and builds resilience in children.

🍂Trees have been coppiced in Britain for at least 6,000 years. Regular cutting helps the tree live longer and boosts woodland biodiversity. Old skills, still relevant. After the storm, we have coppiced a few holly trees to make way for new shoots next year - holly poles should be ready in a few years. After this, the process continues.
