So if recycling isn't the answer? What is?
THIS 👇 The power to create change is with all of us, saying no to big polluting brands, making little changes, choosing local, doing our own mini cleans and spreading the message. Plastic Free is possible, it's just about creating the ripple...🌊

Germany was largest exporter of plastic waste in 2025, sending 810,000 tonnes overseas, analysis finds 01/05/2026

Why is plastic recycling not the answer?

REPOST from Plastic Free Communities in West Somerset
The UK is now one of the world’s biggest exporters of plastic waste. We sent over 675,000 tonnes abroad in 2025, that's the highest level in eight years and enough to fill about 127,000 shipping containers.

A lot of this waste ends up in countries like Turkey and Malaysia, where investigations have linked “recycling” to pollution, dumping, and even burning. In Turkey, the waste infrastructure is already overwhelmed. The country generates 3.3m tonnes of plastic waste domestically, which is more than double its capacity to recycle.”

⚠️Here’s the shocking part: Exporting plastic still counts towards UK recycling targets — so instead of dealing with the problem at home, we’re often just shipping it overseas.

With new EU rules banning exports to non-OECD countries by 2026, the likely impacts are:

⚠️More UK waste being sent to countries like Turkey, which are already struggling to cope
⚠️Increased incineration or landfill within the UK if exports become harder
⚠️Risk of the UK becoming a “middleman” for EU waste exports
⚠️Continued environmental damage unless plastic production itself is reduced

The bigger issue isn’t just waste management — it’s the sheer volume of plastic being produced in the first place.

Until that changes, the problem doesn’t disappear… it just moves.

We regularly find HUGE nails on all 3 falmouth beaches with our magnet machine as a result of fires on our beaches, a massive hazard for small feet and quite shocking to pick up. One we found was 6 inches long! Ouch!! Please do fill in this consultation so we can. Get beach firea banded and ensure beaches are safe for everyone. Have your say here > https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/falmouth-beaches

We’re inviting residents to have their say on whether open fires should be banned on Falmouth’s beaches.

Following an increase in fires in recent years, the Falmouth Beach Management Group has raised a number of risks and concerns.
