“That’s just the way I am”
How often do you say that about yourself without really questioning what you mean by it.
You’ve probably got to know yourself quite well over the years. You know the things you like about yourself, the things you’re less keen on, and perhaps some things you’ve simply accepted because they’ve always been there.
Maybe you know that you tend to get anxious in certain situations, or that you lose your patience when you’re under pressure. Perhaps you find it difficult to say no, you put things off, you worry more than you’d like to, or you keep falling into the same patterns even though you know they aren’t helping you.
When something has been part of your life for a long time, it can be very easy to think, “Well, that’s just who I am.”
But being used to something doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to stay that way.
Sometimes, when you start to look more closely at the things you do and the way you respond, you discover that there are reasons behind them that you’ve never really considered. And once you begin to understand what is going on, you may start to see that there are other ways of responding.
That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you, or that you need to become a completely different person. It’s simply about deciding whether there are parts of the way you are that you would genuinely like to change.
So perhaps the question isn’t simply, “Is that just the way I am?”
Perhaps it’s:
“Is that how I want to be?”
Because there can be quite a difference between the two. 😊
