It's been nice to enjoy summer without feeling like I've messed everything up. A few years ago, summer was a completely different story for me. I'd have a holiday, meals out, BBQs, days out with the kids and no routine.
And as soon as things went slightly off plan, I'd press the f*ck it button.
So I'd eat more, I'd move less. I'd stop paying attention to what I was doing and tell myself there is nothing I can do about it currently and that I'll have to start again when life isn't so busy.
And by the end of summer I'd be incredibly self conscious of the way I looked and how much weight I had gained. So, I'd start again.
That usually meant finding the latest fad diet, drastically cutting calories or deciding I was suddenly going to train 6 days a week. I'd go from one extreme to the other.
This summer has been completely different. I've enjoyed some brilliant time with my kids and family. We've had a great holiday.
I've eaten plenty of food I enjoy. But I haven't felt like I've "fallen off the wagon" because there was never a wagon to fall off. I've just carried on with the habits that have become part of my normal life.
And that's probably one of the things I'm most proud of about my own journey. Losing weight was great, but learning how to live my life without constantly needing to lose weight again was the real win.
Now the kids are heading back to school, we can settle back into our normal routine. And if you've had a tough summer, gained some weight and you're already thinking about which diet you're going to start on Monday...
Maybe don't start another diet- maybe it's time to fix the problem permanently.
