Single sticks made by our very own Vytautas - they're impressively good!
What an amazing find
Rare 3,000-year-old sword found in Germany so well-preserved it still shines Archaeologists in Germany have discovered a bronze sword that's still gleaming after being buried for 3,000 years.
This just came up on my You tube stream.
A sword duel from 1949 (yeah, you read that right 1949).
The details are in the description of the original YouTube post. Which to be honest shamefully just re-enforces just how fragile the male ego can be.
Still, hope you find it interesting.
1949 Duel W***y Rozier vs Francois Chalais 6 October 1949. Silent. Epee duel to first blood.W***y Rozier (27 June 1901 β 29 May 1983) was a French actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter ...
You know, I plan for these nice organised unboxing videos that other HEMA clubs do and what I get are these chaotic free-for-alls. I guess we just get excited and run about like kids.
Anyway big thanks to Kvetun Armoury for their excellent, prompt service despite all their recent challenges - we're loving the Basket Hilts.

Oh once again it's "NEW BOOK DAY" and today's new addition to my library is this gem, a tranlation of the treatise ascribed to artist Albrect Durer and dated to 1512.

Today was a bit like Christmas for Our Mike and Vytas.
Finally getting their hands on their New Shiny Gross Messers from Landsknecht Emporium.
I.33 sword and buckler coming together nicely after a lot of hard work from Mike and Vytas
So got a wedding to go to on Saturday and of course my sgian dubh was missing.
Which in fairness wasn't a disaster, mainly cause I got an excuse to get in touch with my mate Bryn of Blue Hound Bladeworks and replace the cheap, overly-elaborate, mass-produced Chinese stainless steel and plastic one that I inherited with my kilt, with this, much more to my taste, handmade functional little delight.
Thanks Bryn.

Happy Star Wars Day to you all.
Had a bit of a wander round the Burrel Collection this morning.
Our Mike who mistakenly though he could avoid a mention here.
Happy Birthday Mike.
Our Andrew getting his point across during todays i.33 (Sword and buckler class) today.
Lurve New Book day.
So looking forward to reading this pleasantly titled volume.
This is a bit of a departure from my usual medieval murder manuals. Not a how to but a look at the how and why.
On Saturday, Vytas represented us at the Glasgow HEMA open tournament in both longsword and sabre/basket-hilt categories, where he narrowly missed out on a medal, placing 4th below much more experienced competitors.
Congratulations to the winners and a huge thanks to Chris and the Glasgow Sword Breakers, and Ben and Saorsa: Scottish Swordsmanship for their friendship and support.
So after a long spell of Longsword classes we will be changing onto the I.33 system of sword and buckler next week
Hit us up if you're over 18 and interested in exploring the techniques of the oldest known European fencing treatise.
The members and associates of Glasgow Historical Fencing Society would like to wish a very HAPPY BATHDAY to our Good Friend Cha MacKenzie of Pro Muay Thai .
Many Happy Returns old man.
Zwerchhau and wrist control counter against Zornehau.
This looks like fun - some of our lot started HEMA via medieval reenactment and we love a good market.
Sitting having a coffee and this cracking little clip came up on my insta. feed.

That's us wrapped up for 2021 - have a very happy Christmas from The Glasgow Historical Fencing Society and we'll see you all in 2022!
Approaching the holiday season we take a break from our normal classes and look at something we don't usually do, like the staff, or developing the off-hand using concepts from stick fighting as illustrated here by Martin and Andrew.
It feels like this year's FightCamp ages ago! Vytas learned the hard way that you're not meant to use a feder as a metal bar and hit too hard, even if the opponent is a 7 foot giant... Can you spot the moment the feder breaks? Thanks to Richard Hughes from Order of the Blade for lending his feder afterwards!
This is just an interesting article and thought I'd share here to dispel some myths and misconceptions about the medieval practice of trial by combat.
It's by no means complete - the rules changed from region to region but it gives an interesting insight.
Trial by Combat: The Bloody Business of Justice - Medievalists.net As a community of the faithful, medieval people believed that no matter how evenly or unevenly matched the fighters were, the one who was innocent would prevail, but trial by combat was not often a black-and-white thing.
With COP26 going on here in Glasgow Im going do my part in encouraging a bit of awareness

Today just got word that my friend and student Vytas Zickus came fourth overall at the Open Steel "FightCamp" Tournament.
Fightcamp is the biggest Historic European Martial Arts event in Britain.
This is an amazing result considering the Glasgow Historical Fencing Society doesn't focus on tournament fighting and V. himself has had very little competition experience.
So BIG CONGRATULATIONS on a fantastic result.

Not posted owt for a bit so here's another play from the from i.33 archive.
Hope you enjoy.
From the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, this is part of a notebook belonging to Patrick Heron Watson, showing drawings and lecture notes from the 'Anatomy for Artists' lectures given by surgeon John Marshall FRS, dated c. 1856. A beautiful illustration of some fencing skeletons and an explanation of how the ribs are designed to protect the internal organs, even from a sword...

This is another video that was never really meant for distribution outside the group, so the presentation is ropey, to say the least.
This is our interpretation of the first play of the combat system shown in the Fechtbuch that's come to be known as I.33.
If you're strong enough to pick up a baby, you're strong enough to pick up a sword. Actual sword weights of actual historical swords in the Royal Armouries. Not as heavy as people usually think.
There's a popular misconception that swords were historically too heavy for women or small men to lift. Thus this comparison chart was created based on the actual weight of historical swords in the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, UK. If you're strong enough to pick up a baby, you're strong enough to lift and to wield the heaviest sword.

We have turned off public commenting for this post as so very many people purposefully missed the point. Swordwind is a Historical European Martial Arts (aka HEMA) School where men, women, and teens of all sizes, races, ages, orientations, and physcial abilities can (and do!) learn historically accurate sword techniques. We, as a group, intend to continue to disabuse notions that historically accurate martial arts must be limited to large, heavily muscled cis men.
Lifting a sword is the first step in the process. Anyone who can lift it is capable of learning, of practicing, of sparring, and with enough practice and dedication: of winning.
Awesome display of prowess!
