Been a while since we have done any match reports so thanks to Freya for keeping track of the game and hassling me to post one.

Kyleakin 3–2 Gairloch

GF MacRae Cup – Quarter Final

Kyleakin progressed to the next round of the GF MacRae Cup after a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Gairloch in challenging, windy conditions.

The match began with both sides adjusting to the blustery weather, but Kyleakin took an early lead in unusual fashion. A defensive mix-up saw Sean Campbell’s sliding challenge lead to a misplaced pass back, and with the Gairloch goalkeeper missing his clearance, the ball rolled into the net for an own goal to make it 1–0.

Kyleakin doubled their advantage shortly after, with Aaron Macbeth putting the keeper under pressure and forcing the ball into the net to put the home side 2–0 up within the opening stages.

Gairloch responded well, pulling a goal back with around 25 minutes remaining in the first half to make it 2–1. The momentum continued to swing their way when they were awarded a penalty 15 minutes before the break, which they converted to level the score at 2–2. They nearly went ahead moments later, but a well-struck free kick from just outside the box was superbly saved by the Kyleakin goalkeeper.

Half-time: 2–2

The second half proved to be a tighter and more cautious affair, with chances limited for both sides. The decisive moment came around 15 minutes in when Kyleakin were awarded a penalty following a challenge from the Gairloch goalkeeper on forward Archie Gillies. Aaron Macbeth stepped up and calmly slotted home his second of the match to restore Kyleakin’s lead at 3–2.

Despite late pressure from Gairloch, Kyleakin held firm defensively to see out the game and secure their place in the next round.

Full-time: Kyleakin 3–2 Gairloch

Credit to Gairloch who battled hard all day and would be a great to see them back in the league.

Sport and Recreational Facilities for our Future

We have been working to develop proposals for new and improved sport and recreational facilities for South Skye. Facilities that will match local needs and aspirations for South Skye.

After the Highland Council completed their site investigations it threw up a few challenges for the planned siting of an all-weather ‘training’ Pitch. SSCC have reviewed a number of iterations for the site of the all-weather pitch, potential changing room, parking etc. A challenging task due to the limitations of the site, in particular the size and the site drainage conditions.

The SSCC ambition for phase one is to redevelop the existing grass football pitch into a high specification Astro Pitch. The all-weather pitch will be a full sized, multisport facility with energy efficient lighting – all of which will enable increased use. Its higher specification will ensure it is much safer and healthier for those taking part in sport in the long term. This high specification surface will also open up the facility to other sports such as rugby, shinty, hockey, and athletics. The new all-weather pitch will allow for year-round use which the current grass pitch cannot cope with. The all-weather pitch will be bookable for clubs, sports groups and associations but also open to the community for free play. With this new facility we will reduce our carbon miles by reducing the distance all the sporting children, young people, and adults need to travel currently. We will also be looking into new technologies to mitigate our carbon footprint for reducing the impact such a facility has. Solar power for any buildings, practical methods for reducing the in-fill spreading, and in time replacing the in-fill with a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option.

The later phases in the development will include a multi-use changing pavilion, an opportunity for additional community space, biodiversity regeneration and an upgraded village hall. In the current plans the later phases will see the removal of the existing MUGA, or Multi Use Games Area, which is nearing its end of life. However, an agreement is being sought with Highland Council for the community to use the new school MUGA outwith school hours. The existing playpark will also be upgraded.

SSCC would like to invite comments from the community on the current proposals which can be viewed on our website. If you would like any further information please get in touch with the SSCC Trustees and they can also be contacted via the website https://www.southskyecampus.org/ Membership forms are also available on the website and we would encourage you to join up to ensure you have a voice in the future of sport and recreational facilities in South Skye.

Kyleakin 3-1 Fort William

⚽️ Corey MacLennan
⚽️ Keith Mackenzie
⚽️ Gordon Mccarroll

Kyleakin got their season underway with a tricky home fixture against the Fort. FW came out the stronger team and had the wind at their backs playing some nice football at times, they did strike the post but overall the kyleakin defence was coping well. Kyleakin took the lead when a long ball held up in the wind and Corey MacLennan managed to poke it round the keeper and keep his composure to finish from a tight angle.

HT 1-0

Much the same as the first half Fort started well and even got back into the game with the kyleakin defence stretched the ball found its way to the Fort winger who kept his cool and slotted it home. Kyleakin did go infront again and it was substitute Keith Mackenzie who pounced on a good save by the keeper and fired home with his first touch. Kyleakin were starting to get more joy in behind the tired defence and it was a ball over the top that found the tireless Joel Goldby barring down on goal he was taken down and the penalty was awarded. Gordy stepped up and sealed all 3 points.

All in all a tricky game with weather and few players unavailable but a good start and some decent performances particularly from Joel Goldby with some great energy up front and Cameron Godfrey who had a solid game at the back. Was also great to see Sean Campbell making his competitive senior debut for the club, hopefully the first of many for the youngster.
