Despite some pretty miserable wind and rain in January, it's been a busy wee start to the year, servicing and repairing bikes. There are obviously plenty of brave souls who get out on two wheels regardless of the weather!

There have been a few things on customers bikes recently that would be easy to miss, but which have a pretty fundamental effect on their performance. Whether stiff links on chains, failing outer shift cables, or dried out sealant on tubeless tyres, they all result in cycling experiences which are far from ideal. It really is worth taking out some time every couple of weeks just to check whether your bike is looking, feeling or performing as it should, and making simple interventions at minimal cost before seeking professional help.

Just back from a couple of days immersive training, given by the technical lead for Campagnolo in the UK, Graeme Freestone King. There is nothing he doesn't know about Campagnolo products, many of which he has made significant contributions to. A great, and really valuable, couple of days away from day to day cycle servicing and repair to keep expanding my skills and knowledge base.

Still a wide variety of makes and types of bikes coming in with a whole load of different issues requiring service and repair. Keeps it interesting.....

Somewhat ironically, as we experience the best weather of the year so far, the time has come again to start getting our bikes ready for the Autumn and Winter. As the leaves fall, the dampness increases and the temperatures drop, it’s more important than ever to make sure your tyres, brakes, steering, cables and gears are up to the rigours of the seasons. After a couple of weeks of being closed for a break and some sunshine, it's back to bikes again. Whilst away, at no time did I feel tempted to get on a bike - in contrast to Scotland, it was too hot to be bothered! - but it wasnt an entirely cycle free trip, taking in the ceremonial start to the Tour de France in central Florence. Amazing atmosphere, and it's only by being there that you truly appreciate the scale of the event. If you have considered going along, just do it. You won't be disappointed.

Despite the less than impressive weather, it's been easily the busiest first 3 months of the year here at Southside Cycle Repairs. People obviously like their bikes and want to get out and about on 2 wheels. And what a variety there are - I still come across makes I had never heard of before!
