The island of Arran has a population of just over 5,000 people but yet has multiple tennis courts dotted around the island. Picture below 👇

Dennistoun has a population of over 22,000 and had multiple tennis courts for more than 100 years. since 1989 Dennistoun lost its tennis courts for good and there are no indications of that changing anytime soon ☹️

In 2017 we converted an old bowling green into a temporary grass tennis court. It was the first time tennis had returned to Alexandra park in 28 years. There was lots of talk about proper tennis courts being installed but no real meaningful effort was made by our elected representatives.

Dennistoun is an affluent area with people from all backgrounds. Why cant the people of Dennistoun have proper tennis facilities like many parts of the west end and south side of the city? Even Garrowhill has tennis facilities which is in the east end.

There are loads of funding mechanisms in place for tennis including the national lottery. Has it been the case that our elected representatives have simply not stood up and argued for proper funding for tennis.

Scotland produced a 3 times grand slam tennis champion singles player born in Glasgow but yet we missed the boat regarding encouraging more to play the game.
In 2017 we embarked upon a campaign to try and bring back tennis to Alexandra Park. Milnbank housing (sports pavilion) were magnificent as were the parks department of Glasgow. However not much enthusiasm was shown by any of Dennistoun’s elected councillors.
As we head towards May’s council elections it would be great if some new council candidates showed some enthusiasm for new sports facilities like tennis in Dennistoun. Why should the west end or the south side continue to get all the funding?

You can now play tennis on a proper synthetic surface on the remote Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 island of St Kilda. Surely if an island with a population of hardly anyone can do it then it can be done in Alexandra Park?

Massive credit to Judy Murray 👏 for highlighting the disappointment of where we are right now regarding tennis. This country 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 produced two grand slam champions which in turn rejuvenated the sport and as this report shows, participation in tennis is at an all time high.
However those wishing to play don’t have access to good local facilities across the country and even when they do the prices are astronomical. Tennis Scotland, sport Scotland and the LTA have failed to deliver good quality tennis facilities despite making a promise they would back in 2016😡.
It’s was particularly galling to hear sport Scotland using covid as an excuse. COVID started around January 2020 and restrictions introduced in March the same year so what happened in 2017/18/19? Where are all the new facilities?

As many of you know we managed to get permission to instal a grass tennis court in the park. We received magnificent support from Milnbank housing association and it was great to hear Judy Murray was impressed however generally speaking there really isn’t a lot of support elsewhere and sadly we had to give up. Milnbank still service the tennis court and have tried their best to keep the court open but Dennistoun deserves at least two proper installed multi surface tennis courts and as polling showed we knew it was popular with the people of Dennistoun and beyond!

Sport Scotland, tennis Scotland and the LTA need a full clear out of all those who have failed to deliver and new enthusiastic people brought in like Judy Murray. From 2016 to 2021 it’s marked failure so keeping the same individuals involved will get us nowhere!
