During the summer holidays the Karate Associationhas booked the Kelvin Hall on a Wednesday evening from 7.00pm to 8.00pm for children and 7.00pm to 9.00pm for adults.
This class will run from Wednesday 5th July to Wednesday 9th August inclusive.
The Barra and Islay residential courses will not affect the running of the Karate classes within the Kelvin Hall
Our Karate association has been running children's Karate classes within the Greater Glasgow area for over forty years and has several venues which I shall list and please see note beside each.
Douglas Academy on a Monday evening from 6.30pm to 7.30pm - (class is on every Monday during school term time)
Notre Dame Primary School on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 7.00pm to 8.00pm - (class is on every Tues/Wed during school term time)
Knightswood Primary School on a Thursday evening from 6.30pm to approx 8.00pm - (class is on every Thursday during school term time)
Notre Dame Primary School on a Saturday morning from 11.00am to 12.00pm - (class is on every Saturday morning during school term time)
Kelvin Hall on a Saturday afternoon from 1.00pm to 2.00pm - (class is open all year round)

First 2 classes at any of our venues are free as taster sessions and then the Karate fees for one child is £20.00 per calendar month and this fee allows access to all and any of the above classes and there is an annual membership of £10.00 for a child.
No fees are requested until after 2 free taster sessions.
The Karate club holds regular grading events to allow both children and adult members to progress to Black Belt.

JUNIOR KARATE GRADINGS MARCH 2023
The senior Black Belts of the Karate Association have decided the grading that will be held in March will be for Junior/Children grades only.
Junior members based in the Glasgow area will have their Junior Karate grading on Saturday 18th March from 10.00am to 12.00pm in Notre Dame primary School.
For those members who train at Douglas Academy their Junior grading will be held over 2 consecutive Mondays - these will be Monday 13th March and Monday 20th March with times being 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
Grading application forms will be issued in the next couple of days.
RESIDENTIAL KARATE COURSES
There are 2 residential karate courses being run in Scotland and they are as follows -
Isle of Barra from 24th June to 27th June (Training will be on the Sunday 25th June and Monday 26th June)
Islay from 11th August to 14th August (Training will be on Saturday 12th August and Sunday 13th August)

All of our Karate classes are now back to normal at Douglas Academy, Kelvin Hall, Knightswood Primary School and Notre Dame Primary School.
RESIDENTIAL KARATE COURSES FOR 2023
There will be 2 residential Karate courses being held in Scotland in 2023.
The first will be at the end of June and it will be on the Isle of Barra - for further details please speak to Angus Galbraith.
The second one will be held mid August on Islay - for further details please speak to Wilf Divens.
It is also in the pipeline to organise a residential Karate course abroad in Porto, Portugal near the end of this year - for further details chat to Stephen McGlinchey.
KARATE GRADING FOR ALL MEMBERS
A Karate grading is penned in for both Junior and Adult members with April looking to be the month it will be held.
KARATE SUITS
I am sure we are all aware about the cost of living circumstances and have to advise that it has impacted on the price of Karate suits which will more than likely lead to an increase of £2.00 to £3.00 per suit - please always check ebay etc to see if the cost of these suits there is more competitive.
KARATE FEES
I am pleased to say that there will be no increase in any of our Karate fees i.e. membership, monthly training fee or grading fee during 2023.
So long as members keep their monthly payments going over the full year then their annual membership fee will be waived and membership renewed automatically.

Before I list the Xmas and New year Break for the Karate classes over the festive period could all members take note of the following -
Knightswood Primary Karate Class - As most of you are aware, there is a proposed teachers strike on Thursday 24th November. This strike action does not affect our Karate class that Thursday and it will go ahead as normal.
Douglas Academy Karate Class- There will be no class held at Douglas Academy on Monday 28th November due to the gymnasium being used by the school itself.

KARATE GRADINGS
Karate grading for Glasgow will take place at Notre Dame Primary school this Saturday 12th November from 10.00am to 12.00pm.
Timetable for Saturday Grading at Notre Dame Primary -
SATURDAY 12TH NOV
10.00am - All candidates in for the grading must arrive at school assembly by 10.00am for candidate enrolment to be confirmed
10.15am - Juniors members will remain in assembly hall for warm up session and senior members will be moved to gym
10.15am - 10.30am: both juniors and seniors participate in warm up in their allocated arera
10.30am - 10.50am: both groups taken through basic movements of Karate (Kihon) - such as kicking, punching and grappling drills
10.50am - 11.00am: refreshment break
11.00am - 11.20am: all candidates to be tested on their Karate forms (Kata) to the standard of both their existing grade and proposed grade
11.20am - 11.25am: further refreshment break with senior joining junior group in the assembly hall
11.25am - 11.50am: coloured belt ceremony, with successful candidates being awarded their new promotion.
Karate certificate will be sent as pdf to successful candidates confirmed email address
11.50am -12.00pm - photo time
12.00pm - school to be vacated
Karate grading (final part) for Douglas Academy will be on Monday 14th November from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
All candidates will be examined and tested on their knowledge and ability to perform Karate Katas (forms).
Grading will commence at 6.30pm and will continue to 7.15pm when successful candidates will be awarded a colour belt to show their new status. Grading certificates will be sent as pdf to the nominated email address.

Stephen McGlinchey was awarded Shodan (1st Dan) on 15th September, 1972 by Master Harada after a week long Karate summer school held at Keele University in Staffordshire.
This BKCC certificate is dated 6th months later.
Interestingly, KDS/30 denotes he was the 30th person to be recognised and registered as a Black Belt in Karate-do Shotokai by the BKCC.

DOUGLAS ACADEMY JUNIOR KARATE CLUB
I am pleased to announce that after a period of over 2 years plus hiatus our Junior Karate class will be returning to Douglas Academy on Monday 6th June from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
The class will run for 3 Mondays only at Douglas Academy and will be off during the summer school holidays but will return in mid August 2022.
Normally for new starts the Karate Association allows the first 2 training sessions to be free as taster sessions but on this occasion for new starts only all 3 classes in June will be considered as 3 free taster sessions.
I expect this class to be very busy so please bear with me during these initial 3 classes

Over the summer period the Karate class at the Kelvin Hall will run as normal on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons with the addition of a summer class on a Wednesday evening from 7.00pm to 8.00pm for children and 7.00pm to 9.00pm for adults.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness I have to announce Master Yves Thelen of Liege, Belgium has passed away.
He was a true pioneer of Shotokai Karate-do and Aikido in Europe.
He kindly taught at one of our residential karate courses in 2012 at Cashel, Loch Lomond.

I trust everyone is enjoying this Easter Weekend and here is information relating to the Karate classes returning after the Easter Break as well as forthcoming events.
KARATE CLASSES
There will be karate classes held at the Kelvin Hall this Easter weekend with normal class times of Saturday at 1.00pm to 2.00pm and Sunday 12.00pm to 1.00pm for both children and adults.
All of our Karate classes (bar Douglas Academy) will return to their normal venues and times as of Tuesday 19th April.
KARATE GRADING 14TH MAY
This grading for all eligible adult and children members will be held at Notre Dame Primary School.
DONEGAL RESIDENTIAL KARATE COURSE
This residential karate course will be held in Donegal over the September weekend.
Please remember that this part of Ireland is in the EU and the necessary currency is Euros.
There are 2 adult places still open for those who are interested in attending this course - please speak to Stephen McGlinchey if you require further information on how to join.
DOUGLAS ACADEMY
Our Junior Karate class will return to Douglas Academy on Monday 6th June and will run for the first 3 Mondays in June and return in mid August.
It is the intention of the Karate association to allow the 3 Monday classes at Douglas Academy to be open for new starts and to have all 3 Mondays as free taster sessions.

Our Saturday and Sunday classes will continue as normal as they are not affected by this holiday period and as noted above we have booked Kelvin Hall on Wednesday 6th and 13th April.
Colin from Edinburgh will be through on Wednesday 6th April to take the Senior class through Kali/Panantukan training
GRADING ON SATURDAY 14TH MAY
Grading application forms for eligible members will be issued over the next week or two for applicants to apply for this coloursed belt grading.
DOUGLAS ACADEMY
Our Junior Karate class will recommence at Douglas Academy on Monday 6th June from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. This is due to. the gyms at the Academy being used for students examinations.
We will only be able to run 3 monday classes there prior to school Summer break and usually with any new start the club allows the first 2 classes to be free.
The decision has been made to allow for new starts only on the 3 Mondays in June for these to be free taster sessions.

GMB STRIKE ACTION CANCELLED AT NOTRE DAME PRIMARY SCHOOL
Industrial strike action has been cancelled by GMB allowing our Karate classes on Tuesday 29th March and Wednesday 30th March to go ahead as normal.
The last class at Notre Dame will be on Saturday 2nd April for the Easter break.
We did manage to book both Wednesday 6th April and Wednesday 13th April in the Kelvin Hall from 7.00pm to 9.00pm for juniors and adults to cover the Easter break.
The Saturday and Sunday classes will run as normal at the Kelvin Hall as they are not affected by the Easter break.
