Six months on, Glasgow's cycle hire boom shows no sign of slowing
Glasgow's cycle hire scheme is on a roll - and the numbers tell the story.

Just six months after new operator Voi took the helm, usage has surged, with rides up 311% compared to the same period last year, as more people turn to hire bikes to get around the city.

Since last November, the scheme has grown month on month. In that time, riders have clocked up an incredible 455,000 trips, spending a combined 7.29 million minutes in the saddle.

The latest data also shows continued uptake, with 46,000 individual riders hiring a Voi e-bike in the last six months.

The boom ties in with a major expansion of the network, with dozens of new Voi stations popping up across Glasgow. This wider spread has made it easier than ever to hire a bike for the commute, a quick trip across town or to meet up with friends.

There are now 171 Voi bike stations across the city - sixty more than this time last year, with new stations being added every week. The expanding network is helping bring convenient, low‑carbon travel to more neighbourhoods than ever before.

Some locations are proving especially popular. The University of Glasgow near Byres Road has emerged as the city's busiest Voi station, logging 23,517 rides in just six months - a clear sign that fast, flexible travel thrives when in the right place. Close behind are the Voi stations outside Queen's Park railway station and at St Enoch Square - each recording more than 22,000 rides since November, cementing their status as key hubs for people on the move.

And the new bikes are working hard. Each one has been hired on average almost three times a day over the last six months, pointing to strong, consistent demand right across the network.

Cycle boom in Glasgow as Voi electric bike hires soar past 1 million
A cycling revolution is gathering pace in Glasgow as the city’s popular Voi electric bike hire scheme continues to smash records, with hires now soaring past the one million mark.

The milestone highlights a dramatic rise in demand for greener and more accessible travel across the city, with thousands of Glaswegians and visitors choosing electric bikes for commuting, shopping, leisure rides and nights out.

Since Voi launched its fully electric public cycle hire scheme in late 2025, the service has expanded rapidly across Glasgow with more than 1,000 e-bikes and hundreds of parking locations now available citywide. Early figures showed the scheme had already surpassed 170,000 rides within just a few months of launching, before usage continued climbing at record pace throughout 2026.

City leaders say the popularity of the bikes is helping reduce car journeys, ease congestion and encourage healthier lifestyles while making travel around Glasgow cheaper and more convenient.
The dockless-style system allows riders to pick up and leave bikes at designated parking bays throughout the city, including busy transport hubs, shopping areas, parks and residential neighbourhoods. Recent expansions have added dozens of new stations in response to soaring demand.

The electric bikes, operated by Voi, replaced the city’s previous nextbike scheme and made Glasgow the first UK city to operate a fully electric public cycle hire network.
Cycling campaigners have welcomed the success, saying it shows people are eager for affordable and environmentally friendly transport when the infrastructure is available.

With usage continuing to rise, Glasgow City Council is expected to explore further expansion of the network, with more bikes, bays and routes planned in the months ahead as the city continues its push towards more sustainable transport.

Glasgow voters offered free e-bike ride on election day.
Voi are offering up to 30 minutes of free travel with their electric bike fleet next week.

Voters are being offered a free e-bike journey to get them to the polls for the Scottish Parliament election.

Glasgow e-bike operator Voi is handing out vouchers valid for two separate 15-minute journeys to encourage riders to travel to and from their local polling booth next Thursday (May 7). The journey is completely free to claim and can be used to travel to your polling station and either back home or to continue your journey.

The e-bike hire service Voi arrived in Glasgow last November, replacing Nextbike and bringing 1,000 electric bikes to the city. At the beginning of this month, Glasgow City Council expanded the service, by adding over 40 new e-bike stations to the network.

o claim their two free rides on election day, users have to download the Voi app and enter the promo code “VOITOVOTE” before scanning a bike to unlock it.

Voters across the country will go to the polls next Thursday to elect devolved governments in Scotland and Wales as well as some local councils and mayoralities across England.

Voi said that they are urging those elected on May 7 to “Back safe, high‑quality infrastructure for walking, cycling"

The additional stations come at a time when the cycle hire scheme is experiencing record usage, having surpassed 282,000 rides since launch last November.

Following a competitive tender process last year, Voi was awarded the contract to operate the scheme for up to five years, with the service delivered at no cost to the council. The new stations will initially operate as geo‑fenced virtual locations, allowing for rapid deployment without the need for ground markings.

While markings will be installed over the coming weeks, this flexible approach quickly increases the availability of e‑bikes for hire at high‑demand locations, while also expanding off‑hire capacity to make journey completion easier for riders.

Positioning near high‑demand points not only reduces walking distance if a primary station is full but also helps ensure bikes are available where demand is strongest, improving reliability for users starting and ending their journeys.

The Voi app has been updated to display all new on‑hire and off‑hire points, with photographs included to help riders easily identify each location on arrival.

Additional virtual stations are being introduced on a weekly basis, enabling the network to respond quickly to demand and to continually improve availability across the city.

The new stations will initially operate as geo‑fenced virtual locations, allowing for rapid deployment without the need for ground markings.

Working closely with scheme operator Voi, further locations will continue to be assessed, with ongoing expansion planned to strengthen the overall network, improve reliability, and support Glasgow’s ambition for cleaner, healthier and more sustainable travel choices.

Data collected from 88 automatic cycle counters across the city last year showed that Glasgow had recorded 4.65 million cycling trips between January and August, a 43 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
