A great post from the Western school of massage.

Very relevant to myself right now – I am 4 weeks post surgery for infra & supra spinatus tendon tears on right shoulder with 2 weeks left of wearing a sling then back to lots of physio and rehab.
I had same procedure last year on my left and was Olympic lifting by April 🏋🏽‍♀️

Recovering from an injury or operation is hard work and requires a lot of patience and time - especially as we age - to allow simple biological healing to take place.

To get back to full strength and mobility you have to be dedicated, committed & persistent with (some may find boring and tedious but unfortunately very much essential) physio rehab exercises.

If you need guidance with rehab exercises or struggling with motivation or just don’t know which exercises are best for your recovery, get in touch. I can help.

ROTATOR CUFF INJURY❕

The rotator cuff is a network of 4 muscles (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, Subscapularis) and several tendons that form a covering around the top of the humerus. It holds the humerus in place in the shoulder joint and allows the arm to rotate. Rotator cuff injury refers to the inflammation and swelling of this network. It is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain.

Rotator cuff injuries can be either acute (caused by a particular incident such as a fall) or degenerative (caused by repetitive use over a long period).

There are 3 common types rotator cuff injury:
•Rotator cuff tendonitis
•Rotator cuff impingement syndrome
•Rotator cuff tear

Some symptoms are characteristic of specific types of injury. For example:
•Rotator cuff tendonitis – generalised shoulder pain or pain that worsens with overhead activities or at night
•Rotator cuff impingement syndrome – chronic shoulder pain that worsens with overhead activities or at night
•Rotator cuff tear – pain and weakness in the shoulder
•Bursitis – pain that gets that worse with repetitive or overhead movement

Soft-tissue therapies such as Remedial Massage are recommended to assist the rehabilitation process for many rotator cuff injuries. Remedial Massage can reduce recovery time by increasing the circulation of blood to the affected area and by allowing lymph to return to the heart for recirculation.

The Biopsychosocial Model suggests that to properly understand someone’s medical condition, you must consider all factors with the potential to contribute to their state of wellbeing - BIOLOGICAL, SOCIAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL.

In other words - the once widely accepted treatment method of ‘masking’ a condition with drugs is now considered ineffective as it only considers and ‘treats’ the biological factors.

The Biopsychosocial Model is now commonly used in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain as there is often biological, social and psychological factors contributing to the condition.
It is considered good practice for soft tissue massage therapists to consider social factors and integrate psychological treatments in order to address all components contributing to chronic pain.

Being a good therapist isn’t just about knowing the muscles and conditions inside out, it’s about listening to your patient and helping them to heal through consideration for their BODY, MIND and ENVIRONMENT.
