Wise words from our Bristol dojo!
Self defence does not always need to be punching and kicking an opponent!!! A take down may be more proportionate or effective.
Shorinji Kempo gives you a number of ways to defend yourself and keep you and loved ones safe!
Make your attacker fold themselves into an odd shape while you remain happily balanced. This is the essence of most throwing techniques.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Seminar last weekend!
It was amazing to see so many people take the effort to come up! Training with you was as extremely fun as it was tiring. Hopefully we can have more sessions like this with everyone visiting.

Happy New Year everyone š„³
We had a grading last month and a good part of the club got a new belt, so congrats to them! Even had the time for some cheeky bo staff practice (and no one hurt their shin)

Calling ALL martial artists! š„š„š¤ŗ
This Halloween, your clubs have been cooking, and on Wednesday the 1st of November we'll be coming together for a Halloween Pub Crawl! š
Starting at Bank Street from 7pm, we'll split off into families and visit some of our favourite pubs around Glasgow, before finishing off the night in Hive! šŗ
Families will be made up of people from different clubs, so plenty opportunity to make some new friends!
If you don't really fancy the crawl, that's fine too! We have Bank Street booked all night so you can still chill and get to know the other clubs. š
The theme for the night will be Action and Adventure. š¦ø
If you would like to come, please fill out the Google Form through the link below š„

Hi everyone!
I hope you had fun at the taster session this week! If you are interested in trying a bit more of Shorinji Kempo, here is the information you need.
Training times
We train every Monday (studio 2) and Wednesday (studio 3) at the Stevenson building from 20:30 to 22:10. There is of course no obligation to come to every single session. Note that there is no session today due to the bank holidays.
We also plan seminars throughout the year, where we can learn about an aspect of Kempo (staff, seiho, etc.) in more depth. These will probably take place on Saturdays for 3 or 4 hours, at the gym. We will let you know when one is coming up, and we will also organize some socials.
Also, there is a mandatory (but quick!) booking system that has been set up for covid and hasnāt been lifted yet, so you should book your session here up to a week in advance https://glasgow.clubmanagementportal.com/join/sign-up.html .
Membership Options
There are multiple membership options. You can get a membership for the full year for £40 or just for one semester for £25.
For new members, we also have a 1-month trial membership that costs £5 (that's about 8 training sessions). If you want to continue after that date, you will be able to upgrade to a full-year membership (paying an additional £35) or a semester membership (paying an additional £20). Note that to join any GUSA club (Kempo included), you will need a gym membership (the "University of Glasgow Sport Membership").
Membership Application
There are three steps you need to go through in order to join the club (but itās quick!).
1) Obtain a gym membership, either through the universityās website https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/sport/membership/join/how/ or in person at the Stevensonās front desk. If you are staying at a university accommodation, it is possible that you already have a membership: just check that the one you have is a full membership, and not just an off-peak membership (you need the full one to join clubs).
2) Log in to https://glasgow.clubmanagementportal.com/join/ with the number that was given to you when you bought the gym membership (the āUofG Sport Membership Numberā, which is different from your GUID). You will see a list of all the clubs with the membership options they propose. Scroll down to Shorinji Kempo and select either the full year, the semester or the 1-month trial membership. Then go to checkout.
3) Once you have bought a Kempo membership with us, you will need to fill a very short online form at https://www.bskf.org/student-membership-form.html . The British Shorinji Kempo Federation is our national governing body, and this will give you a free insurance for the duration of the 1-month trial. You should also fill it if you are taking a year or semester membership as it gives us the time to properly set up the insurance with BSKF. Under "BSKF Branch", select Glasgow University and leave the transferring section blank. Select the student provisional insurance, sign and submit. Now, you can come to training!
Clothing
You donāt have to buy a dogi (also known as the white pyjamas) to train with us: you only need one when you want to pass a grading for your next belt (for which you need a belt to begin with!). We aim to have a grading session at the end of every semester, but there is absolutely no pressure to do them. If you donāt have a dogi, just come in comfortable sport clothes (and leave bracelets/rings in the locker!). We train barefoot, but you shouldnāt be too cold once we start moving!
Donāt forget your water bottle (they can be filled at fountains in the corridor).
Thank you for showing interest, and we look forward to seeing you next week!
PS : We have a messenger chat for quickly relaying information among students, if you want to join it just drop us a message on our page https://www.facebook.com/GlasgowKempo to be added!
