Christmas Message: 2018
Merry Christmas and THANK YOU.
On Christmas Eve I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have supported Jackie’s Santa Sacks now in its 4th Christmas, when again three Universities and their nurseries responded to the challenge to compete to raise food for our local elderly.
As you will be aware Christmas can be challenging time of year for many, particularly the elderly who maybe housebound and have not spoken to anyone for several days. Many of the recipients of the Santa Sacks are on a fixed income, unable to afford any sort of luxury and alone when Christmas is just another day.
Austerity, lower food contributions and higher demand has strongly impacted on donations for many organisations throughout the city this year. Truly without the support and generosity of various funders, local businesses and, of course, the students there is absolutely no way Santa Sacks would have been able to reach out to over 200 local elderly and spread much needed festive cheer this year.
It was therefore with delight that the following comments have been received: ‘Unable to get out so this is a huge surprise’, ‘what lovely young people to think about us’, ‘Can’t wait to see what is in the bag’, ‘what a wonderful thoughtful thing to do’.
A Christmas Wish
However, it is not too late for anyone who reads this message to contribute and make up your own Santa Sack and pop round to an elderly neighbour to wish them a Merry Christmas – you may be the only person they will speak to today and your gift the only one they receive.
Embrace the Spirit of Christmas and you will definately be on Santa’s ‘Nice List’.
Merry Christmas to All.
More posts covering this year’s Santa Sacks Story will be uploaded soon.

Some more photo's from Erskine Dementia video shoot, which you can see below
Devastating physical effects of progressive dementia on the brain – to the students this was the first time they had seen such an image.
Watching the playback and de-brief of this enlightening experience of what it is to face the physical challenges of ageing.
Still taken from one of the overhead camera’s in the simulation suite which filmed the students throughout all their tasks

It was an absolute pleasure meeting and listening to the training delivered by Janice, a specialist Erskine Dementia Nurse Consultant. The students asked many questions and learned a great deal from the pre-training, before undertaking the designated tasks wearing the age simulation suit and afterwards watching the playback filmed in the simulation suite.
Thank you very much Janice for all your time and patience. Great morning, learnt a lot.

E-mail: From Caroline McVeigh, Manager, GU Nursery
RE: Educational Benefits of Santa Sacks
Hi I have attached some photos from last year I got permission for them to be used for media or press.
Quote:"University Of Glasgow Nursery Manager Caroline McVeigh described the benefits of taking part in the Santa Sack Appeal as a very good opportunity to involve the children in the local community while making links between generations. Collecting for the Appeal helped the children to develop intergenerational understanding and respect allowing children to become effective contributors and responsible citizens. University Of Glasgow Nursery staff, children and their families generously donated and the children had fun counting all the items to be gifted to the local elderly residents throughout the West End of Glasgow. We look forward to participating again this year."
