For her next Seasonal Mantra session, Laura Gonzalez will be exploring the Navagraha Mantra - a traditional mantra connected with the nine planets of Jyotish, Vedic astrology.

Timed around Halloween and All Saints, you’ll explore this beautiful calming chant together, as well as the qualities and symbolism associated with each of the nine planets.

Laura will guide you through the Sanskrit sounds and pronunciation, rhythm, meaning and philosophy behind the mantra with plenty of time to listen, practise and experience the mantra together.

No knowledge of Sanskrit or previous experience of mantra is needed. And mantra isn’t singing - you don’t need to worry about having a “good voice”!

There's a lovely thread running through the way Lucy talks about yoga: the body isn't something separate from everything else. How we move, breathe and experience ourselves are all connected.

It's an understanding shaped by more than 30 years of Ashtanga practice and teaching, alongside Lucy's background in hands-on bodywork and her ongoing exploration of anatomy and fascia.

This October, Lucy brings that perspective back to Merchant City Yoga for two counted workshops exploring the Primary and Intermediate Series.

A slow and deeply grounding morning with gentle mindful movement, breathing and meditation.

Time to reconnect with your self-care practices through self-massage, followed by a locally sourced, home-cooked lunch.

And an afternoon of yin and restorative poses, guided breathwork and Thai Yoga Massage assists, before settling into deep rest with yoga nidra.

A full day to slow down, restore your energy and reconnect with yourself.

The Bhagavad Gītā is not a book to just read through once - it opens up and offers you more and more every time you return to it. And it really comes to life when you read it together with other people.

From 15 September, Ema will be leading a new weekly Bhagavad Gītā Reading Group at MCY.

Ema is passionate about the text not just for its beauty and philosophical depth, but for its transformational guidance for living more wisely, tenderly, courageously and authentically.

No prior study is required. Together, you’ll explore the cultural and philosophical background to the text, unpack its layers of meaning and explore what practical help it might offer you.

I normally love the shift into September - the optimism and spirit of new opportunities, new starts, probably all from the deep-rooted memory of a new school term starting after the glorious days of the summer holidays.

But this year I’m struggling a bit with feelings of overwhelm - being weighed down by everything that I’ve got going on and a sense that there’s not enough room in my head to keep track of it all. There’s no doubt I have a lot to manage just now - there’s been a lot of change and there’s still more to come.

I’m sure you’ll recognise the feeling. It’s at times like these we feel least inclined to do whatever it is that actually helps us get through, whether that’s running, meditation, sleeping or yoga.

But no matter how overwhelmed I’m feeling, when I step into class with all of you my head clears, my focus comes into the room and the weight lifts enough to let me be present with you. For me that’s one of the magical things about yoga - whether I’m teaching or practising on my mat the rhythm, the breath, the connection with each other helps me feel steady and come back to myself.

So whether you love this September transition or are desperately hanging on to those summer vibes, we’re in this together - see you on the mat this month 💛

Maybe you’ve thought about trying yoga before but never quite made it through the studio door.

Perhaps you weren’t sure it was for you, didn’t think you were flexible enough, or simply didn’t know where to begin.

That’s exactly what Matt hopes to offer with Yoga for Men: A Beginner’s Guide: an easy way in.

Matt himself came to yoga in his early forties and knows what it’s like to begin with a body that doesn’t necessarily move the way you think a “”yoga body”” should. Today yoga is a profoundly positive part of his life, bringing what he describes as a sense of liberation, empowerment and joy in movement.

If you’ve been curious, we’d love you to come along and discover the practice for yourself.

No previous yoga experience needed. Just bring yourself and some comfortable clothes.

That’s what Kelly would tell a friend who was nervous about coming to class for the first time.

You don’t need to know the postures. You don’t need to be flexible. And there’s nothing you need to achieve by the end of the hour.

Yoga Sweet & Simple is a place to move, breathe and take a little time for yourself.

Kelly builds her classes gradually, offering options as she goes - but every step is exactly that: optional. You can choose what feels right for you that day.

As Kelly says, “Think about what you need from this today.”

Intermediate doesn't necessarily mean more difficult.

Lucy's Counted Intermediate workshop this October is open to everyone as an introduction to, and taster of, the Ashtanga Intermediate Series from a fascial balancing point of view.

Many of the asana in the Intermediate Series aren't simply "more difficult". Instead, they focus on strengthening the back of the body and stretching the front.

Lucy will offer plenty of variations and alternatives throughout, helping you stay with the flow of the practice and explore the asana with curiosity and enjoyment rather than achievement.

So if you've been curious about Intermediate but assumed it wasn't for you, this could be a lovely opportunity to explore it.
