High performing athletes have a ‘multidisciplinary team’

A team of specialists from physio’s to dieticians to psychologists to S&C coaches

And that’s on top of their gymnastic coach or football coach

And I know what you’re going to say … ‘dance doesn’t have the funding’

Which is true for the freelance world

And what’s even more mental is that over 50% of them could have been avoided

I’m sure like me, you’ve been one of these statistics

An injury that started as an annoyance and before you know it, it was something that never went away

A pain or a ni**le that not only had you limping on stage

But also took a piece of your confidence

A piece of the trust you had in your body to try new skills

A distracted eye in the studio incase you were falling behind

Experiencing (and importantly, ignoring) the signs of injury has long been masked as discipline in our industry

At least that’s what I thought when I believed pain was an essential part of progress

The problem was I danced through injuries because I didn’t know it could make them worse

And the classic ‘just sit out’ made me feel useless

So I just kept it quiet and continued on, and in pain

And I know it’s the exact scenario you see with your dancers

You too might feel out of your depth when someone says ‘I have a sore knee’

And so the response often becomes ‘just sit out’ because you’re not sure what else to do

So all we’re essentially doing is passing on a poor injury-management system to the next gen that helps no one
