You can study trauma for years… and still not fully understand it.
Books can teach the symptoms. Research can explain the patterns. Training can provide the tools.
But lived experience teaches something different.
It teaches what it feels like to smile while struggling. To be exhausted by things others don’t notice. To carry memories in your body, not just your mind.
Expertise matters. Education matters. But when it comes to trauma and mental health, lived experience adds a layer of understanding that can’t always be learned from a textbook.
The people who have walked through it often see things others miss: the shame, the fear, the resilience, and the hope.
Real understanding happens when knowledge and lived experience listen to each other.
The majority of my insights about trauma have come from working in prisons, listening to the experiences of the men there and exploring what works or doesn’t work in terms of mental health interventions.

We started prep early this year and progressed it slowly over 24 weeks.
It’s been tough but we are now in a great place - 3 weeks out, shredded, peeled and ready early!
Now we have time for refeeds and mock peak weeks before the big event.

18 months and John looks & feels like a different man 💪
John first arrived at in early January 2025. We placed him on a maintenance phase nutrition plan followed by a calorie deficit plan, combined with multiple phases of hypertrophy training combined with HIIT sessions, dynamic AMRAPs, speed/agility training and interval training throughout 2025/26.
John has worked like a true athlete, always putting in 100% effort, and giving total commitment, showing discipline and accountability to our Head Coach, Ross, week on week. And it’s paid off 💪
The fine details:
- Weight: from 222lb to 201lb (-21)
- Waist: from 42 inches to 37 inches (-5)
- Chest: from 40inches to 41 inches (+1)
- Thighs: from 22 inches to 23 inches (+1)
Body fat has been completely stripped away and lean muscle mass emerged. A ‘dad bod’ gut has been replaced by 6 pack abs, and flabbiness in the chest and arms replaced by a hardening and tightening muscle definition.
The overall result: a lean, defined physique that would make most over 30-year old men envious. And guess what? John is now 57 years old 💪
