Hi everyone! With gyms opening on Monday, your captains have collated some advice that they hope will be of use ☺️

First of all, we want to wish you all the best of luck - sure you are all as keen as we are to get back to training & sure it will all go great!

For anyone either new to lifting or unsure of how to structure sessions after this gap in training, a great option is to follow our beginners programme. This is accessible on our Facebook in the ‘files’ section, alongside the intermediate programme which could be moved onto after running the beginners programme for a few weeks. The importance of easing back into training with reduced intensity and volume for a short period is paramount as you will respond well to a reduced training stimulus compared to pre-covid sessions, ultimately getting you back to your earlier strength faster. This - paired with a proper focus on warming up & cooling down - will also support injury avoidance, and with so many of us having been out of the gym for a prolonged period we don’t want injuries just as we can get back into it!🏋️

Alongside this, try not to place too much focus on “what I lifted pre-covid” or “all the things I used to be stronger at”. Set some realistic goals, even if initially that’s just to get back into a consistent training routine. We are all in the same boat so don’t be hard on yourself - positive, productive goal setting is key!

And of course, feel free to message any captain (whether powerlifting or olympic) before your sessions for any advice, a wee chat if you fancy it or after your sessions (for example with videos of your lifts) for feedback on form/technique/any queries you may have. We are reachable on Instagram, but Facebook messenger is probably where you’ll get the fastest response 😁

One last thing - don’t forget to tag in any posts or stories of your lifts and back to gym content so we can feature all you lovely people on the GUWC socials! 🏋️💪🏻🌻🖤💛

💛🖤TOP TIP TUESDAYS 🖤💛

Just as everyone is getting their email from the Stevenson building about Scottish gyms opening up again, I think it gives us the perfect opportunity to promote this week’s Top Tip Tuesday: Going Back to Gyms and “Gymtimidation”

It may be strange, weird and/ or scary returning back to gyms after not being in them for months - or never at all. So we here at GUWC want to provide you with some key pointers to ease those first day jitters and get you ok track to feeling great in the gym once again! 💪🏋️‍♀️🏋️

🏋️ weightlifting wednesday 🏋️

In case you didn't know the European Weightlifting Championships are happening this week in Moscow.

Lifters are aiming to qualify for the Olympics as this is one of the last events before the 30th of April which marks the end of the qualifying period. Here are some of the highlights:

- Loredana Toma from Romania, set a new European Sn**ch record in the 64kg category, with an incredible 114kg (this was a 13kg jump from her opening attempt!)

- Sarah Davies from the UK, came second in the 64kg category with a 101kg sn**ch and a 129kg c&j. She went 6/6 🤯

- Nina Sterckx, from Belgium, won bronze in the 55kg category, with an 88kg sn**ch and a 109kg c&j. This was Nina first senior medal and first time competing in the A group at only 18 years old!!!

There are so many other incredible moments and I would highly recommend watching the athletes compete.

I don't know about you but I am so ready to go back to the gym after watching the competition

Welfare Wednesday
=> 2020/21 farewell post

Josh
Lauren and I have not had the most traditional year as your Welfare Officers, but it has been an honour in which I will cherish. For a lot of us, COVID has had such a significant impact on our well being and with the gyms closing, it has been tough to provide the full support which is normally available. Thank you all for persevering with this year and even just reading posts from the club helps keep the community alive. The engagement has been nothing short of outstanding, given the circumstances. Thanks also to Lauren, who has poured her heart and soul into supporting us all this year; it has been a pleasure working with her, and an honour to be finishing my degree alongside her, and the rest of the committee. If you are staying on with the club next year, you will all hopefully be able to see what herself and Beth will bring to the table in person. Good luck with the rest of the year, and happy lifting (soon!!)

Lauren
Though I am returning to this role for 2021/2022, this year has been like no other and I feel very lucky to have worked alongside such lovely people throughout it. The welfare officer role allows us to connect with our club members in an honest, open way, and for that I am so grateful. It is much more difficult to feel part of a club when the very thing that bonds you has been closed for months, so thank you to all of you who remained engaged with us online this year. Id also like to give my thanks to Josh. We have become a team of two through this role, and I have been gifted such a special friendship as a result.
I wish the very best of luck to all those with exams, and to those that are moving on from University and GUWC.
Lauren

(Both Josh and Lauren remain your welfare officers until handover on Monday 5th, when Lauren will stay on and will be taking on the role)

Hi guys, welcome back to another Welfare Wednesday.
Today we are going to talk about what you can do and who you can go to if you’ve had troubling experiences and are scared to talk about them for fear of disbelief.
We understand that, as individuals, we all go through life differently. Some of us face hardships which others do not fully appreciate, and it can be easy to feel like you’ve not been listened to, or even believed. We want to remind you that there are people who will listen to you, who will believe you, if you are close to them or not. Your welfare officers are among those, but we have attached some additional links to places we trust, where professionals open up an ear and let you talk about your experiences and your emotions. They do care, just as we do. And we don’t want you to deal with these emotions alone.
Anyone can call these helplines, at any time. They offer invaluable support and guidance, but above all are there to listen to you. They talk through your feelings and experiences without judging you or telling you what to do. Below are some services which and have picked out for you. Stay safe, we love you 💛🖤

A message from Josh in light of recent events.
CW//sexual assault, harassment and r**e

Hi everyone, I’m sure if you are reading this post then you have seen the recent and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the past few days. A young woman, Sarah Everard, was walking home last week in South London. On her journey, things took a tragic turn as Metropolitan Police announced they were investigating her disappearance. She called her boyfriend, she wore bright clothing, walked on well-lit streets, and yet still she is missing. Recent reports confirm that her body has now been found. Sarah is not an anomaly; 97% of women in the UK have been sexually harassed, and not enough gets said or done about it.
Men. It is quite easy for us to take for granted such a simple activity, one that most of us don’t give second thought to. But for women, it’s a different story; the fear, anxiety, and lack of general safety are all feelings that no one should have when walking home, yet there is still many a reason for women to feel this way. We live in a time where women are not only sexually harassed, but are the ones blamed for this by “walking alone” or “wearing revealing clothes”. This has to change.
The streets should be always be safe for women regardless of what they wear, what time it is, or who they are with. The only thing that stops sexual harassment and violence against women is the men that are part of it. We need to stop this. Even if you are not the one perpetrating it, we all have a responsibility to call out this shocking behaviour.
I have collated some of what I feel to be some important posts explaining the facts and what we should all be doing to make the world safer for women.
There is no excuse now - we all have to be better, and it starts with you.
