MATCH REPORT
On a warm Friday night at Overstenton Park, Glenrothes Strollers Over 35s welcomed Raith Rovers Over 35s for a league encounter. Games between these two sides are always competitive, and this one was no different.
The first half was a poor one from our perspective, and we never really got going. Raith took the lead around the 20-minute mark after a mix-up in the Strollers defence and looked strong as they controlled possession throughout much of the opening period. They soon added a second, tapping in at the far post after some slick play through midfield.
On the half-hour mark, Strollers grabbed a lifeline when Andrew Adam finished well from close range. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived as Raith restored their two-goal advantage from another set-piece situation, much to the frustration of the home side.
Half-time
Glenrothes Strollers 1-3 Raith Rovers
After a few honest words at the break and a slight tactical reshuffle, Strollers came out a completely different side in the second half and quickly began to dominate possession.
The home side pulled another goal back early in the half when Lee White beat the offside trap before cutting the ball back for the impressive Fraser Robinson, who finished from close range. At that stage it looked as though Strollers were right back in the contest and capable of taking something from the game.
However, the momentum was halted when Lee White was forced off with a hamstring injury just as he was beginning to have a major influence on proceedings.
That was followed by the most controversial moment of the night. Andrew βSukiβ Adam broke through on goal and was cynically brought down by the last defender just as he was preparing to shoot. To the astonishment of everyone involved, only a yellow card was shown. Even worse, Suki suffered a badly broken foot in the challenge and has since been advised it is unlikely he will play again β a devastating blow for both him and the team. Everyone at the club wishes him the very best in his recovery.
The incident appeared to knock the wind out of Strollers, but the lads continued to push for an equaliser. Their task became even harder on 75 minutes when Scotty McAndrew received a second yellow card, reducing Strollers to 10 men.
Despite being down a man, Strollers continued to keep possession well and still created chances, with Fraser Robinson going agonisingly close late on when he fired just past the post.
The hosts were then reduced to nine men after Blair Sutherland received a second booking following an altercation in which the referee appeared to miss a Raith player lashing out. Both players were booked, and unfortunately for Blair it resulted in a red card.
Raith eventually sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when the referee awarded what many at Overstenton felt was a very soft penalty.
Full-time
Glenrothes Strollers 2-4 Raith Rovers
Man of the Match
Fraser Robinson β worked tirelessly from start to finish, grabbed a well-taken goal, and showed a fantastic battling attitude throughout. Deserved more from the game.
A really difficult one for the lads to take, especially given the dominant second-half display. It felt at times like we were up against 12 men, but credit to the players for continuing to battle right until the end. Fair play to Raith Rovers β they came, did the job, and leave with the three points.
The main focus now is on recovering from the injuries picked up during the game, and hopefully we can get everyone back fighting fit soon.
Thanks as always to our valued sponsors β Thistle Systems, Pinkertons Lounge & Function Suite, Alan McIntee Group Ltd, and Andrew Stewart Joinery β for their continued support.
