As I get ever closer to 50 my priorities and fitness / health goals have to change and adapt.
We all want to be 100% as fit and strong as we can be and in a perfect world we'd all stick to a rigid gym and diet routine... but life isn't perfect!!
Kids, work, DIY and injuries etc all get in the way and we have to find a way to adapt and maintain our health around these things.
I don't push myself as hard as I used to, I listen to my body more and understand the importance of rest and recovery.
I'm not looking to be the fittest in the gym or to be as strong as I used to be at 25... but maintaining muscle and bone density, taking care of my flexibility and mobility and eating healthily are as important now, if not more, than they've ever been.
My NON-NEGOTIABLES are fairly simple -
β
οΈ Protein at every meal.
β
οΈ 3 litres of water a day.
β
7+ hours sleep a night.
οΈβ
οΈ 12500 average daily steps.
β
A minimum of 3 strength, core and functional based workouts a week.
οΈβ
Cardio at least once a week.
οΈβ
10 minutes of mobility and flexibility EVERY day.
οΈβ
οΈ 85% rule on diet (85% healthy, 15% treats and rewards).
It's not always perfect, I don't always hit my targets 100%, but I keep a sensible, balanced consistency which will hopefully keep me moving and healthy for as long as possible.
Consistency is key... quick fixes, fad diets, rapid weight loss, excessive training etc may give short term results but nothing beats being consistent, creating routines and sticking at it... habit forming !!
Enjoy the finer things, have treats and night outs but make sure you stick to your routine and don't fall off the wagon.
Small, simple changes to your lifestyle will result in positive changes to your wellbeing which are maintainable... not a burden.
