MATCH REPORT โ๐ป
After rain washed out their midweek softball fixture, Ruardean Hill womenโs section returned to Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation T20 hardball league action on Sunday at Corse and Staunton.
Corse won the toss and chose to bat โ a decision their captain quickly came to rue, as she was brilliantly caught and bowled by Becca (2-12) off only the second ball of the match. Two overs later, her opening partner perished to the same bowler, with Kelly demonstrating good movement and safe hands at short extra cover to cling on to a leading edge. After a few l***y blows, Iona (3-4) took wicket number three, a seaming delivery breaking through the defence of the batter to hit the top of off stump.
With the score at 47 for 3 after 10 overs, Corseโs number three decided to go on the attack, hitting a succession of boundaries to bring up an excellent 50 off only 48 deliveries. Her retirement caused another momentum shift, with Millie and Samantha bowling good spells for no reward but also few runs. This was backed up by some impressive fielding, notably from Jenni and Andrea who frequently put their bodies on the line to turn potential fours into singles and dot balls. Iona capitalised on the pressure created, bowling full and straight to the new batters and hitting the stumps twice in a double-wicket-maiden. Two more maidens followed in the next two overs โ Becca and Iona (again) demonstrating their death bowling ability for the umpteenth time this season โ as the home team were restricted to a mere 16 runs off the last 36 balls of the innings.
91 for 5 represented a useful total, but one that felt under par on a good pitch. Leigh showed good intent from the off, hitting her first ball for four, before being bowled attempting another big stroke. This brought Donna (40*) to the crease who โ perhaps feeling confident after an impressive performance as wicketkeeper โ hit a boundary in each of her first three overs at the crease. Not to be outdone, skipper Kay (20) hit three fours of her own before chipping to mid-on to end an excellent partnership of 51 off only 49 balls. Joss (11*) picked up where her mum had left off, straight driving her fifth delivery to the rope, and with Donna in such superb form โ hitting 7 fours in total and scoring at quicker than a run-a-ball โ the finish line was soon in sight. Fittingly, the winning runs came in the form of another boundary, Joss pulling the ball through midwicket to give her team victory with 8 wickets and 37 balls to spare.
This was RHCC womenโs third hardball league win of the season โ a new record for the team, and one that can be attributed not only to improved skill levels, but also the great collective spirit that drives them on every week. Long may it continue. Up the Hill!
