NEXT UP — HECKINGTON UNITED vs GREAT GONERBY

Another Saturday, another cup competition.

This weekend we’re back on the road as we head to Heckington United for the Sills & Betteridge Challenge Cup, with a place in the next round up for grabs.

We’ve already made one successful trip to Heckington this season, grinding out a 1–0 win in biblical weather, saving a penalty and generally spending 90 minutes trying not to drown.

This time it’s cup football, and after sticking seven past AFC Sutterton last weekend, we’re hoping the shooting boots haven’t disappeared quite as quickly as they arrived.

Different cup. Familiar opposition. Hopefully a familiar result.

FULL TIME — GREAT GONERBY 7–1 AFC SUTTERTON

Well… that escalated.

The Goners are through to the next round of the Sharman Burgess Sports Cup after sticking SEVEN past AFC Sutterton at the Rec.

Coops x2, Archie x2, Cody, Noah and Joe Joe all getting their names on the scoresheet. Sharing is caring apparently.

After grinding out a scrappy 1–0 last week, we clearly decided we’d had enough of close games and fancied something a little less stressful.

Seven goals, seven different reasons to lie about how good each one was in the pub afterwards, and safely into the next round.

Great Gonerby 7–1 AFC Sutterton.

NEXT UP — GREAT GONERBY vs AFC SUTTERTON

League football takes a back seat this Saturday as we begin our Sharman Burgess Sports Cup campaign at home against AFC Sutterton.

We’re coming into this one off the back of a 1–0 win at Heckington, where the weather was horrific, the football was scrappy, we saved a penalty and somehow came away with all three points without anyone needing armbands.

This week it’s knockout football. No points to grind out, no draws to settle for. Just 90 minutes to try and get ourselves into the next round.

Hopefully we can play a bit more football this time, score a few goals and make the afternoon slightly less stressful than last Saturday. Although knowing us, that last one might be asking a bit much.

FULL TIME: Heckington United 0–1 Great Gonerby

Not pretty. Not dry. But three points are coming back to Gonerby.

A proper scrappy game in absolutely horrible conditions, where playing decent football quickly became less important than simply staying upright.

Heckington had the chance to take the lead from the spot, but PENALTY SAVED. We probably should’ve had one ourselves at the other end, but apparently the rain had washed that particular page out of the rulebook.

We battled, dug in and managed to find the goal we needed. From there it was very much a case of grind it out, clear absolutely everything and get to full time with the lead intact.

1–0. Clean sheet. Three points. Soaked.

Sometimes you’ve just got to win ugly.

NEXT UP — HECKINGTON UNITED vs GREAT GONERBY

This Saturday the Goners are on the road as we head to Heckington Sports Ground to take on Heckington United, with a 2pm kick-off.

After last week’s 2–1 defeat, we’re looking for a response. Preferably the second-half version of Gonerby that actually played some football, rather than the first-half version that seemed determined to assist the opposition.

The forecast says rain, so we’re expecting a proper Saturday afternoon: soaked shirts, sliding tackles, a ball that stops dead in a puddle and at least one bloke insisting the pitch is “absolutely fine” while standing ankle-deep in water.

Hopefully this week we can keep the gifts to a minimum, find the back of the net a bit more often and come home with three points.

No Coops no party.

Great Gonerby 1–2 Boston Colts

First half? We’ll pretend that didn’t happen.

Gifted them two goals and generally looked like we’d all been introduced to each other in the changing room five minutes before kick-off.

Second half was a completely different story. We were on top, created the chances and looked much more like ourselves. Unfortunately, putting the ball in the massive white rectangle at the end of the pitch proved to be today’s biggest challenge.

Plenty of effort to get back into it, but you can’t give teams a two-goal head start and expect them to politely hand it back.

Bad first half, much better second. We take it on the chin and go again.

MATCHDAY — GREAT GONERBY vs BOSTON COLTS

Back at the Rec this Saturday as we welcome Boston Colts for our second league game of the season.

We’re coming into this one off the back of a 2–0 win against Boston Athletic, although anyone who watched it knows it should’ve been about five. Apparently scoring the easy ones is something we’re saving for later in the season.

Clean sheet, three points and plenty of chances created though, so we’ll take that all day long.

This weekend brings another team from Boston, and we’re hoping for more of the same.

Boston Athletic down. Boston Colts next. Apparently we’re just working our way through Boston one team at a time.

Great Gonerby 2–0 Boston Athletic

Three points, clean sheet, job done. Should’ve been about 5–0, but apparently hitting the target is still an optional extra.

We even had one absolutely buried top bins, clearly over the line… Standard Saturday afternoon.

Plenty more chances came and went that were easier to score than miss, but we’ll save those for shooting practice.

Oh, and Coops scored directly from a corner. Not really worth mentioning though. Happens all the time. Moving on.

2–0. Clean sheet. Three points. Perfect start to the league season.

THE LEAGUE IS BACK!

No more “it’s only pre-season” excuses. No more “just getting minutes in the legs”. The points actually matter now.

The Goners kick off the new league season at home against Boston Athletic, with a 2pm kick-off at the Rec.

Pre-season has given us a bit of everything: some decent football, some questionable football, a few goals and a 0–0 that certainly won’t be getting its own Netflix documentary.

But that’s all done now. Clean slate, first three points of the season up for grabs and hopefully someone’s remembered to pack the shooting boots.

Get yourself down to the Rec, bring the noise and let’s start the season properly.

FULL TIME: Great Gonerby 0–0 Long Bennington

A proper pre-season game… and by that we mean neither keeper will be putting in an overtime claim.

We controlled most of the first half and looked the more likely side, but just couldn’t find that final pass when it mattered. Second half was a bit more even, but it still felt like the game was there for the taking.

Plenty of positives to take, another clean sheet, and more valuable minutes in the legs. Just need to pack a bit more quality in the final third before the season kicks off.

We’ll take the clean sheet… the goals can stay in pre-season hiding for one more week.
