What a weekend at the WLYC 24‑Hour Race — one of the best yet for Budworth SC.
Friday night set the tone perfectly: teams gathering in town for food, followed by a full‑on party atmosphere back at the clubhouse with a DJ, dancing, and laughter carrying us well into the early hours.
Race day delivered everything a 24‑hour epic should. A stiff breeze and 30‑knot gusts made for a lively afternoon, with capsizes across the fleet and some seriously testing conditions. As forecast, the wind eased overnight into glass‑like calm, slowing lap times to something closer to a half‑marathon pace. Classic WLYC: tough, tactical, unforgettable.
Budworth SC proudly fielded a record five teams — four GP14s and a Firefly…our A, B, C, D and F teams. Around 100 sailors, families, and supporters lined the banks to cheer every lap and every gritty changeover. The battle for the overall win went right down to the wire with South Staffordshire SC’s A team, who took the victory, congratulations to them.
Budworth results out of 75 entries:
• A Team — 2nd
• B (Masters) — 18th
• D (Junior) — 20th
• C — 55th
• Firefly — 60th
A phenomenal achievement across the board with so much teamwork, resilience, and club spirit shining throughout.
And a huge thank‑you to the incredible support team who made it all possible:
the cooks keeping everyone fuelled, the scorers keeping us honest, the safety ribs teams on duty, to the parents and families cheering from dawn to dusk, and every volunteer who stepped in to help. You are the heartbeat of Budworth.
