A very productive 20 week push up phase complete here with online client 📈
I wanted to ensure throughout this phase that body composition was managed effectively, allowing us to begin prep for his first natural show with minimal unnecessary body fat to remove.
This provides us with a significant advantage when aiming to achieve true stage-level conditioning, as we can focus on refining detail and maintaining performance rather than relying on aggressive fat loss late into prep.
A common mistake during the off-season is allowing body fat levels to climb far beyond what is productive.
Many athletes underestimate how much tissue ultimately needs to be removed before stepping on stage. In contrast, competitors who consistently present elite-level conditioning typically maintain a much higher standard of body composition throughout the latter stages of their improvement season.
This approach creates a more physiologically responsive body heading into prep. Insulin sensitivity, nutrient partitioning, recovery capacity, and training performance are generally maintained at a higher level, allowing for more efficient fat loss while preserving lean tissue. It also reduces the need for excessive caloric restriction or unsustainable levels of output later in the process, resulting in a more controlled, predictable, and ultimately more successful contest prep in the long run.

8 WEEK TRANSFORMATION 💥
My beautiful bride Lucy!!
This was not only a lifestyle change, but also a chance for her to learn how to activate her core properly, remove all back pain by doing suitable movements to suit her body and work around Lucy’s hypermobility.
After a rocky start with a couple of hurdles we had to get over together, she started to fly through the Powershift Program and her training, mindset and confidence all changed.
3 kilos down, 35 cms lost all over and 4 cms gained in all the right places 🔥
She started to believe she could actually be the Bride she had envisioned. It was no longer going to be a “maybe I’ll look good.” It was a definite outcome.
Lucy was willing to work hard - around juggling many plates in the timeframe we had. Proud that she started to learn her body and how to fuel right with nutrition. ⚡️

Why you are wasting your time focusing on "kcals burned" in a cutting phase 🔥
Focusing on calories burned during a cut is a waste of time because fat loss is determined by how many calories you consume relative to your needs, calories burned from exercise are inaccurate estimates and already partly accounted for in your daily energy expenditure...

Reverse diet phase wrapped up nicely with 🤝
He is now sitting at the same weight in both his starting visuals and his current physique update but a totally different body composition! Wild...
As you can see from the two slides this has been a process of stringing together productive phases back to back.
The first slide shows his initial starting point before we began a 12-week dieting phase. In all honesty, the approach wasn’t overly aggressive in terms of calorie reduction or output, which allowed us to achieve a strong body recomposition rather than just rapid weight loss.
We then transitioned into a strategic holding phase around Christmas to stabilize progress and maintain results. From there, we moved into a structured reverse diet, which we’ve now been running successfully for the past eight weeks, focusing on restoring calories, improving performance, and supporting long-term sustainability.
The reverse phase is often more important than the diet itself because it determines whether your results last. After being in a large or even moderate calorie deficit for a long period of time, your metabolism is usually slowed, hunger hormones are elevated, and your body is primed to regain fat quickly.
A structured reverse phase gradually increases calories, allowing your metabolism, hormones, and energy levels to recover without excessive fat gain. Without this transition, many people regain weight rapidly, undoing the hard work of the diet causing this yo-yo effect through the entire year.
Remember the cutting phase helps you lose the body fat, but the reverse phase helps you keep it off and restore long-term progress and ultimately balance if that is your goal as you can maintain this comfortably.
