This past Saturday, 20th of June, both boats went out. One for Thessaly, the other for Rhuys. This tells the story of Rhuys. No videos or photos unfortunately but we did manage to get some on Thessaly which we’ll post soon.

Here's another story from our club historian, Phil Thurtle. Phil tells of a time when the club put on an exhibition at the old Ritz Cinema.

In May 1958 there was a film released in the UK called 'The Silent Enemy'. It told of the World War II exploits of frogman Lional (Buster) Crabb and his battles with the Italian frogmen that were sinking allied ships in the Mediterranean, especially in Gibraltar. All very true, he did exist and a lot of what is in the film really did happen although there was some artistic license. It starred Laurence Harvey as Buster Crabb but also in the film was Dawn Addams who herself was a diver and appeared in several films with diving content.
The film was shown at the Ritz cinema in Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes and a feature was included in the Grimsby Telegraph (17th May) advertising the film. Founding member and branch chairman Martin Yale was part of the feature advertising his shop Yale’s in Freeman Street and also in Duncombe Street. He also advertised underwater equipment as seen in the foyer of the Ritz cinema supplied by YALE’S. The feature in the Telegraph also goes on to say that there would be a display of the frogman equipment used in the film as well as modern equipment of the time as organised by Grimsby Sub-Aqua Club.
Martin Yale told me he managed to get a loan of the actual diving equipment used in the making of the film Silent Enemy. This was on display in the Ritz foyer along with modern equipment loaned for the display by Yales sports shop in Freeman Street. Maybe someone out there has a photograph of that display in the foyer?
The Ritz cinema was in Grimsby Road near Blundell Park football ground, there’s a McDonalds currently standing on the site now.

As it’s the club’s 70th this year, we’ve decided to put on a bit of a bash at Grazing Platters, Kings Hall, Cromwell Road, Cleethorpes on Saturday October the 10th. We’d love to see some of our former members there. If you’re a former club member and would like to attend, please get in touch with us by either messaging us on here or by emailing: [email protected]

Thanks,

BSAC 37.

We managed to get one boat out earlier this week and dived ‘Giuseppe’, a ship we don’t know much about. She’s still a great dive with three anchors still very much in tact. Pictures are from the day as well as what we know about the ship and her location.

Maybe you know something about the ship? If you do, we’d love to hear from you.
