Apologises this report is late being posted.
Report from Sunday by Dean Capes
Sky Sports have a âSuper Sundayâ and today some of the regions best walking footballers had there own Super Sunday in aid of an annual defibrillator tournament down at the superb facility at Clee Fields.
The tournament was spilt into 2 age groups, over 50âs and over 60âs and I was given the opportunity to look after one of the Grimsby Corinthians Official Walking Football Club over 60âs teams in group 1. An 8 team round robin format with each table topping team playing in the final.
So first up Grimsby Ancient Mariners, a match like many others against this opposition in the past, completely dominated by the Corinthians. Michael Rodger opened the scoring, with at this early stage, goal of the tournament. A rasping right foot drive that dipped and confused the keeper, even though he got his fingertips to it, failed to keep it out. Marc Seward then added a second after a great passage of play. Final score 2-0.
Up next Louth, a 3-0 win ensued with goals from Michael Rodger,Derek Thomson & Kevin Adamson.
Next up Gainsborough, and a keeper who was having the game of his life as no matter what was thrown at him he just seemed to save it, but ultimately the dam was breeched and Derek Thomson got the all important goal. Final score 1-0.
Boston Community next, and once again Corinthians controlled the game, knocked the ball about with aplomb, created the chance for once again Derek Thomson to fire home from distance to close out a 1-0 win.
Next up probably the best team on our side of the draw Boston A, both teams were rather cagey in there approach to this one, looking for the one chance to settle the match. Neither side could trouble the scoreboard so it finished 0-0.
Scarborough Barons next and an early own goal from a Marc Seward shot set Corinthians on to another 1-0 win as there control of the ball in possession closed out the game.
That victory ensured a final place, but as professional as ever the Corinthians dispatched North Ferriby with a comfortable 1-0 win scored by the âScottish Pirloâ Derek Thomson again.
So P7 W6 D1 L0 F9 A0 Pts19
And so to the final against Retro Rovers a good tight game with both sides playing it in the right spirit contributed to a 1-1 draw, wth Rovers scoring from the penalty spot after Wayne Butt was adjudged to have encroached into the goalkeeperâs area. An attacking substitution then lead to the Corinthians equaliser through some weird refereeing. Marc Seward thought heâd equalised but the referee had blown his whistle to give a free kick for ânot walkingâ of a Rovers player. This didnât matter as the resultant quick free kick by Derek Thomson to Mark Bebbington resulted in Mark Bebbington slamming the ball past the Rovers keeper. Final score 1-1, and now to the dreaded penalty shootout.
Rovers went first and missed, Michael Rodger scored, Rovers second was scored, Derek Thomsonâs well struck penalty rebounded straight back to him off the post. Rovers third was scored, upsteps Marc Seward, now we all know Marc can strike a good dead ball, but on this occasion he took a leaf out of Chris Waddleâs Italia 90 book and launched it in to orbit, itâs probably just going round the dark side of the moon by now!!!đ¤Ł
So Retro Rovers are the 2026 Defib tournament winners.
To lose on penalties is no fun, but to go through the tournament conceding just one goal and that was a penalty is a great credit to all of the players in the squad.
MOTT has to be Derek Thomson, the best thing to come out of Scotland since Tunnocks Wafers. His leadership of the team today was exemplary as well as his passing and his four goals from open play. đ
And finally a big thank you to those people that put on todayâs excellent tournament, the referees, the players from all the teams and the Staff at Clee Fields.
See you next time, and as Nigel Holmes always says âfootball definitely the winnerâ.

Last 50âs competition running for me today , the annual Defib tournament
7 players available after a late withdrawel
First up Hornsea , tough game which Corinthians dominated but at times struggled to breakdown a resolute defence
Eventually the breakthrough came from a most unlikely source
The gingerbread maestro set up Justin Wiseman to fire home , minutes later a repeat move ended with the same result with a superb finish from Juzza again
Mark Bazza and Neil Phillips controlled the defence leaving Alan in goal little to do , Chris Goodall Dean wright managing the game out for a 2 0 victory
Next up were Appleby frodingham , another tight game , decided again by a fine strike from Juzza, again the team managed the game expertly to deny any chances , winning 1 0
Next up were Louth , chances were at a premium although I feel Grimsby looked the more dangerous with the Louth keeper in fine form , the game was settled though by a strike from Mike Norvock for Louth for a 1 0 defeat for Corinthians
Next up were old foes Gainsborough
Both teams started brightly , but lightning struck twice midway through the game , Juzza twice hitting the woodwork and both times rebounding back off the keeper to give Grimsby a 2 0 lead , obviously both own goals đđ¤đ
Bazza was dominating at the back ably assisted by Neil, but Gainsborough got a lifeline scoring with a crisp finish
Corinthians though , on three runs hit back , Neil firing home with fine shot
Grimsby comfortably saw the game out for 3 1
Next up Stamford , always a tough game , Corinthians opening the scoring with a shot from Gazza Gingerbread Moore , 2 minutes later , some lovely footwork from the maestro was finished with a low shot to the corner for 2 0 , again Corinthians dominated possession to see out the game 2 0
Last up our friends from Wakefield
Needing an unlikely 4 0 victory to top the group to progress to the final
Another tight game , Wakefield with plenty of possession, but Grimsby defending superbly as a team and Alan in fine form , both teams had the odd chances , but wakey showed their class , to create and finish for 1 0
Excellent game played in the right spirit
With wakey seeing out the game to win 1 0 and the group
Congrats to them for retaining the trophy , beating Boston 1 0 in the final
Fantastic day of football , thanks to Dave Bent for organising raising money for new defibs and Mick Hill for sorting the refs and fixtures
Excellent days football for Corinthians , everyone playing their part
As ever football is the winner â˝ď¸

Corinthians had a 2nd 60s squad playing in the Defib Tournament at Clee Fields Grimsby today.
Played some good football but struggled to find goals and all where tight games.
4 draws and 3 defeats from the 7 group games played.
A great effort from all involved and thanks to those who stepped in last minute to make sure we had a squad.
Well done lads đđâ˝

Grimsby Town Corinthians Walking Football Club
May 31st
âEvery 1âs a Winnerâ (Hot Chocolate, 1978).
What makes a club like Grimsby Town Corinthians successful? Is it the number of trophies on display in the cabinet? Is it the number of members it has? Is it the fact that men and women over the age of 50 can come together and enjoy the camaraderie and friendship associated with the club? Or is it a combination of all these factors?
For the competitive player, there are numerous tournaments around the country and, indeed, around the world. Over the past two weeks, teams representing the Corinthians were Plate winners in the Queens Cup in Hull, runners up to the Gibraltar National Over 60s in Mallorca, and Lincolnshire League Champions in two different age categories. Proof of the clubâs success in tournaments can be seen in the trophy cabinet, now nestled in the foyer of the YMCA pavilion at Clee Fields on Ladysmith Road.
Membership at the club is booming with well over 100 enthusiastic walking footballers enjoying sessions which take place on Tuesday and Thursday 10.00 â 11.00 am (Men), Sundays 10.00 â 11.00 am (Mixed), 6.00 â 7.00 pm Wednesday (Ladies) and 7.00 â 8.00 pm Wednesday (Men). Why not come down to Clee Fields and see why Grimsby is the hotbed of walking football in the country?
Apart from the glory of winning tournaments and collecting silverware, there is another key factor that makes this form of the beautiful game so important. Itâs about bringing together people from different backgrounds to socialise, make friends and gain a sense of camaraderie and achievement that few sports can attain. Walking football changes peopleâs lives for the better whether it relates to improving fitness or building self-confidence.
The result? A smile so big thatâs worth a dozen winnersâ medals.
Please donât forget, walking football is always the winner.
