PLAYING AROUND WITH SOME CALF KICK IDEAS

I was messing around with a few calf kick ideas in training the other day.

I’ve seen Yuki Yoza use this calf kick setup, so I thought I’d have a play around with it and mix in a little of my own style. Here’s the drill I came up with.

The sequence:

1. Jab, Cross
2. Slip the return cross, Liver Shot, Low Kick
3. Double Block the Left Body Kick
4. As the kick retracts, Counter with the Calf Kick
5. Cross, Left Hook, Outside Calf Kick

There’s quite a lot going on in this one, so don’t try to rush the whole sequence straight away. Break it into sections, get comfortable with each part and then start putting everything together.

Give it a try in training and let me know what you think. 👊

Do you use calf kicks much in your own training? 👇

STOP THROWING BLIND LOW KICKS

One of the easiest ways to get your low kick checked is to simply throw it on its own.

If your opponent can see the kick coming, they have plenty of time to react and lift their leg to check.

Instead, I like to hide my low kicks behind my punches.

The punches occupy your opponent, draw their attention upstairs and make the low kick much harder to read.

Here are 5 boxing & low kick combinations you can practise:

1. Jab, Cross, Left Hook, Right Low Kick

2. Jab, liver punch, Right Low Kick

3. Jab, cross to the body, left hook, fake right low kick, left hook, right low kick

4. jab, right body punch, cross, liver punch, right low kick.

5. Jab, liver punch, right over hand, right low kick.

Don’t just think about throwing punches and then adding a low kick. Think about how the punches are helping to disguise and create the opening for the kick.

Give them a try on the pads or bag and see how you get on. 👊

Which combination would you be most likely to use — 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5? 👇

STRUGGLING TO PIVOT ON YOUR ROUNDHOUSE KICK?

A lot of people struggle to pivot their supporting foot properly when throwing a roundhouse kick.

Here’s a quick drill you can use to help improve the mechanics.

Place your foot on a chair, box or the ropes of a boxing ring. Rise up onto the ball of your foot and pivot until your toes are pointing behind you.

Repeat this anywhere from 10–50 times, concentrating on making the movement smooth and controlled rather than rushing through the reps.

Once you’ve done that, head over to the bag and apply the same movement as you kick. You should instantly feel the difference in how easily your hip and body turn through the kick.

Give it a try and let me know how you get on. 👊

Is there anything you’re struggling with in your training that you’d like me to cover in a future video? Let me know in the comments 👇
