It’s sad to see the closure of a local sailing club, but it was great to welcome some of the members of Denholme Sailing Club into their new home at Warley Moor reservoir yesterday. We hope all our new members have a great seasons sailing at Halifax Sailing & Watersports Club this year.

A successful Sunday development and racing event.

Well, what a day it’s been at the club today. Starting at 10.30am we have run a one to one personal development course for some of our newer sailors who are keen to progress into racing. The car park was full and dinghy trolleys were stacked to make space on the shoreline. This was a very well attended training and racing event!

This mornings training was tailored individually to each sailor and a huge thanks must go out to all the team who gave their time to bring together these training schedules. Lots of work was done on sail and boat trim, start line approach and timings, along with post sailing debriefs and coaching.

This afternoon we followed on to give trainees the opportunity to race in the afternoon club racing events. The first Pursuit race saw 14 boats racing and OOD Chris Holden quickly realised that he had his work cut out as non of the training boats have sail numbers! A huge thanks to Chris for giving it his best effort to decipher the results and also to William for committing to get all the training fleet sails numbered….did he say before next weekend??? Also to all the regular club racers who gave time to mentor newer sailors on the water. It would be great to get feedback from sailors young and old who attended the event, please leave comments below.

We will be running a further development course next Sunday morning, again running through into afternoon racing, so let us know if you want to get involved. This is open to all club members.

Thanks to all involved in running the event and to all who attended. It was great to see so many sailors on the water.

Interested in developing your dinghy sailing into dinghy racing? Have you been out of sailing for a while and looking to make a comeback, but lacking a little confidence? Have you always wanted to develop your sailing skills, but don’t know where to look for that extra help and advice? Why not come and join us at Halifax Sailing and Watersports Club?

From the beginning of the 2023 season, we will be running sailing development sessions from 10.30 on Sunday’s. After lunch we will continue these sessions into Sunday afternoon whether you are interested in racing or improving your skills. Club sailors will be on hand to give you advise and helpful tips with Quick Clinics between races to help you develop your skills and get the most out of the great sailing breezes at Withens Reservoir. If you need “on the water” help, why not join in with our buddy sailing system where we give you “on the water advice”.

So how much does all this cost, well the training cost nothing! All you need is to take out a normal sailing membership (£165 per season) and then all this training is given for free as a part of our club racing development program.
We are based at Warley Moor reservoir, close to the wind farm at Wainstalls, Halifax. With the reservoir surrounded by open moorland, we enjoy consistent steady breezes, ideal for sailing and windsports. We have dinghy sailing, windsurfing, wing foiling, canoe and stand up paddleboard memberships available and are a family friendly club.

Interested? Then message, email [email protected] or take a look at our website www.halifaxsailingclub.org.uk for further information. We look forward to seeing you soon!!

I’m sure many of us are looking forward to the final episode of Happy Valley tonight. Here at Halifax Sailing Club, we were amused to see in last weeks episode Tommy Lee Royce looking wishfully out over our club water at Warley Moor Reservoir. He should have given us a call beforehand, we could have loaned him a boat to come sailing with us, or maybe not, we’re a friendly and welcoming bunch so he may not have fit in…… Wonder where he’s hiding now🫣
