2.

Hi and welcome to the world of Jolene Yacht Racing. We are a shared-ownership yacht syndicate that races a high performance J111 made up of some past members of the very competitive and familiar boat Night Owl 2

Our aim is to race against big boys both inshore and offshore and hopefully one of three things will happen:
1. We show a decent result and try harder next time, this also makes us happy
3. We have great fun, this makes us really happy

Jolene leads a pampered lifestyle and is always professionally maintained having been lifted and de masted for a complete make over and refurb in July 2021 Running and standing rigging replaced. Hull blasted, faired and cooper coated then burnished, new electronics, carbon mast refit and new lacquer, new steering and much much more. She is kept at Hamble Point in ready to race condition. All the equipment is updated and serviced throughout the season to keep her in tip top condition

Jolene is our boat, not a school or charter boat, and she gets all the attention you would expect if you owned your own boat, sometimes more because she has a lot of owners who all love her

Being a racy girl Jolene has a brand new sail wardrobe of mainsails, genoas, spinnakers and storm sails all replaced in August 2021 by Quantum sails UK who have also provided considerable ongoing technical support. We replace the sails regularly and work with our sail-maker and onboard tech to get the best from our wardrobe

We are always looking for fast hands and fun crew to make up spaces when available and just like Night Owl 2 we are always on the lookout for working in partnership with suppliers. Please hit the message button or email us at [email protected]

We are currently awaiting our Marvel meets Tarantino inspired graphics in pornstar pink along with our IRC rating

Regatta Report - J-Cup, The Solent,, 21-23 June 2024

The J-Cup weekend is probably the pinnacle of the year for J-Boat owners in the south of the UK each year. The regatta, attracts good sized one design classes for all the active J-Boat classes and the J-111 is no exception. and we had a superb 3 days of sailing with winds between 5kts and 20kts.

This weekend we also welcomed Jacek back and are very happy to say that he will be joining the core crew pool going forward. Congratulations and welcome. Solid sailing skills, will to learn, fitness and agility, flexibility on role and being a genuinely nice guy meant you fitted in well to our mixed and diverse crew

This weekend we sailed the straight lines well and the mark manoeuvres were well disciplined so a major improvement over last weekend. Congrats go to Nicky, James, and Noel for refining the ex*****on of the front of boat activity. Chris and Jacek also really smoothed out the cockpit drills on Jacek's 2nd full regatta with us.

A fleet as competitive as the J-111 one design fleet though is very unforgiving and is populated with some great sailors and great tacticians.. Misjudge the start and you can easily be 20 boat lengths behind at the first tack, however, our straight line performance managed to get some back as you can see in the video. However these races are won and lost by seconds .

We know where our focus is next outing.

In such a competitive fleet however

Regatta Report - June 21-23 "024, J-Cup, The Soilent
----------------------------------------------------------

This year feel like it has had far more windy days than last. We have used our J3 and even our A2.5 far more this year and the J-Cup was no different. We even had some races where the wind strength made us question whether or not to hoist the Spinnaker - but given our crew and 'the need for speed' we took advantage of the conditions and enjoyed the rare opportunity to get the J-111 sailing on the plane at optimal downwind speeds of 12 kts and 155 degrees TWA - so many smiles on board.

Our results though once again suffered from our lack of finesse (and perhaps not enough practice) at some key points - our manoeuvres at windward and leeward ,marks were far slicker this weekend and were fault free - kudos to trim and bow teams.

In this /111fleet though, no slack is granted at the start or the marks: we need to be a bit more assertive to avoid losing places - especiallly the start as you will see in the video clip

Kudos to Frequent Flyer, Journeymaker II and McFly for podium positions in this years UK J-Cup for J-111 class.

Regatta Report - Royal Southern Regatta June 8-9 2024

Last weekend saw Jolene out in the Solent with the 6 other Solent based J-111's in the Royal Southern Yacht Club Summer Series June Regatta for some fun and competitive one design racing.

The light W to NW winds that were forecast didn't materialise. Instead we had unseasonably cold, shifty and gusty winds ranging between 6kts and 18kts.

We were missing Julie Fawcett, our primary helm, this weekend again so Andrew Hubbard, one of our other core owners took the helm. This led to some other shuffling around with Alex Mathers taking on Tac/Nav, Chris King stepping into the Trim 1 role, and Jacek Gisicz joining for his first full Regatta with us in Trim 2 position. This meant we kept our Bow team intact in the shape of Nicky Flook in Pit, James Hawkins on Mast and Noah on Bow with Paul as usual on Main.

This was also the first weekend we had fully commissioned B&G Hercules instruments in place. Having the start linesand Target boat speed and angles on the mast instruments had a very positive influence on the helm and trimmers.

Our straight line boat speed and height/depth was once again good, but the reshuffled crew and insufficient time on the water together to drill Manoeuvres left its make showing up as some bad mark roundings and in particular spinnaker drops at the leeward mark. In turn in such competitive one design racing that left us ata the back of the fleet in the final results. Nothing practice won't solve though.

Socially, half the crew stayed together in our crew house in Hamble so that meant for a fun weekend full of laughs, conversation and good company.

Our next outing is J-Cup in two weeks time

Regatta Report - Royal Southern Regatta, June 8-9, 2024

This weekend was the second of the Royal Southern Summer Regatta Series. Seven of the Solent based J-111's were out and we dominated the IRC 1 start line creating some great and challenging One Design Racing in what is always a very competitive fleet.

The weather want quite what we expected -.the light W- NW breze forecast turned into a difficult gusty and shifty breeze ranging between 6 and 18 kts - it was also unseasonably cold.

We were still missing Julie Fawcett, our regular helm, from the team which resulted in some shuffling around. Andrew Hubbard moved to Helm, Alex Mathers into Tac/Nav and Chris King moved into Trim 1 from Trim 2. Jacek joined us for his first full Regatta with us in Trim 2. Our core bow team of Nicky in Pit, James on Mast and Noah at the bow were not affected by the shuffles.

The big plus for this weekend was that our new B & G Hercules based instruments were fully commissioned and configured for the first time . This gave us Start Line data pre-start and Target Speeds and Angles based on boat polars post start. It was a real game changer for the helm and trimmers and we were hitting our numbers on both tacks both up and downwind and it showed with respect to straight line performance against the other J-111s

Unfortunately our performance 'going round the corners' wasn't so good. Some new people and others in new positions shone a light on us not having standardised and well drilled routines - particularly for spinnaker drops and for when other boats cause us to need to rapidly change our plans. The result was a few messy and slow drops and a spinnaker wrapped around the forestay twice. Luckily we recovered well and no new sails or crew needed :-)

Socially over half the crew once again stayed in our crew house and we had enjoyable and social evenings which adds to the fun of the weekend

Next outing is J-Cup in two weekends time

All in all though we are happy with the benefits the new instruments bring and are pleased with our straight line performance.

Regatta Report - IRC Nationals at Poole 25-27 May 2024

Well, this was a weekend where we had everything from 5kts to 25kts.

Steve, Andrew, Chris Paul and Amanda took Jolene down to Poole from Hamble on Friday 24th. We caught the tide perfectly and did the trip in under six hours - unfortunately motoring the whole way as the wind was on the nose and for one reason and another we didn't have access to our delivery sails so we decided to save our Quantum Regatta One Design sails

Nicky had found us a great place for us all to stay so the crew house became a buzz of activity and lots of laughs

We welcomed back some old faces to Jolene as well as our new crew member Jacek who will be joining us for the next few regattas

Saturdays racing was light weather - not easy to get the boat going and keep her going well. We got better as the day we t on and by the last race Andrew on the helm, Alex and Primary Trim and Paul on main were easily hitting our target speeds and angles. With a lot of crew in.unfamiliar positions going round the corners proved a bit more challenging and that was reflected in our results.

Sunday was just the opposite. The breeze built during the day from 15kts up to 30kts by the last race of the day. Once again straight line speed and angles were good and upwind tacking was much better though the leeward mark in these windier conditions proved even more challenging than Saturday. As the wind for the start of the last race built to steady 20s we decided that we would not start for fear of damage. Our intuition was proven correct - boats were coming back to the marina with shredded mainsail and spinnakers ripped or flying by the halyard like a flag from the top of the mast. It looked like there had been a few collisions too !

On Monday the wind was lighter again, in the mid teens and we were sailing well - unfortunately a nav and tactics error in both races put us back down the fleet - but we live and learn

The trip back to Hamble on Monday evening was lovely - again we timed the tides well and made it back to Hamble by 11pm.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for a fun weekend
