Hi everyone, Ben here. I’m considering offering FREE Water Safety talks on behalf of Endeavour Swim School to children’s clubs, teams and groups across Hartlepool between now and the first week back at school.

Why am I doing this? Why now?
I’ve taught swimming for over 8 years and have delivered numerous water safety sessions to children throughout Hartlepool.
Sadly, this year more than ever, we’ve seen far too many serious incidents along our coastline, with some ending in tragedy. We live in a coastal town where it becomes too tempting to enter the water on a hot day, but we need to raise awareness as to when it is the right time to do so.
Every child deserves to know how to stay safe around water. While we reinforce these messages every day in our lessons, not every child—or adult—is aware of the Water Safety Code or understands what to do in an emergency.

🛑 STOP & THINK
Before going near the water, ask yourself: Is it safe? Always choose places where it’s safe to swim, such as a lifeguarded swimming pool or between the red and yellow flags at a lifeguarded beach.
👨👩👧 Stay together
Children should always be supervised by a responsible adult and stay within arm’s reach when in or near deeper water. Never swim alone.
🛟 FLOAT
If you find yourself in difficulty, fight the instinct to panic. Float on your back, keep your ears submerged, your head tilted back and your arms out to the side. If you’ve entered cold water, you may experience cold water shock. Remaining calm, floating and controlling your breathing for 60–90 seconds can make all the difference.
📞 CALL 999
If someone is in trouble in the water, don’t enter the water yourself. Instead, throw them something that floats if possible and call 999 immediately.
• At the coast – ask for the Coastguard.
• Inland – ask for the Fire & Rescue Service.
This post only scratches the surface of what I’d cover during these sessions. The aim is to give children the knowledge and confidence to make safer decisions around water—knowledge that could one day save a life.
