What can a surname tell us about the landscape?

Our latest update from Bury Parish Church looks at some of the fascinating family names recorded on the historic ledger stones.

Names including Nuttall, Greenhalgh and Rothwell have origins linked to the landscape – from nut groves and green hollows to streams and clearings.

It’s another fascinating layer of history being uncovered as the recording of these important stones continues.

🌿 Exciting news for Market Place, Ramsbottom! 🌿

We’re pleased to share that improvement works at the Market Place site will begin on Thursday 17 September.

The first phase improvements will run until around mid-October. This will be followed by new planting and landscaping during December 2026 and January 2027. 🌱🌼

Discover one of Haslingden’s best-kept secrets this September as Grane Mill opens its doors for Heritage Open Days.

Visit the Grane Engineering Museum and step inside this fascinating historic mill to discover Haslingden’s rich industrial heritage. See the impressive restored 500 horsepower steam engine that once powered 107 looms, and learn more about the people, machinery and engineering that shaped the area.

This year’s event also commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Weavers’ Uprising of 1826, with a range of additional attractions across the open days, including vintage vehicles, model engines, a model railway and children’s activities.

Open Days: 12th, 13th, 19th & 20th September
Time: 11am–4pm
Location: Grane Mill, Laneside Road, Haslingden, Lancashire, BB4 5PP
Admission: FREE

🔎 What can Bury Parish Church’s historic ledger stones tell us about the people and places of Bury’s past?

The latest research is beginning to uncover some fascinating local connections.

As the inscriptions from the historic ledger stones are recorded and analysed, links are emerging with communities across the area – with Tottington appearing particularly frequently, alongside Shuttleworth, Elton and Redvales.

We’re also finding surnames that appear more than once in connection with particular places, including Warburton, Brooks and Smith.

Each inscription provides another small piece of the picture, helping us understand more about the communities connected with Bury Parish Church hundreds of years ago – and opening up new avenues for further research.

🌳 Good news from Brookside! 🌳

The Prospects Foundation and Hyndburn Borough Council have announced the return of the regular Thursday Gang, along with monthly Sunday volunteering sessions at Brookside.

There are lots of activities, practical sessions and training opportunities coming up, including woodland and meadow management, coppicing and drystone walling – a great opportunity to get involved and help look after this fantastic local green space. 🌱🧤

Brandon Cherry, Hyndburn’s Woodlands Officer at the Prospects Foundation, will also now be spending two days each week working specifically on the Brookside Restoration Project.

Rooted in Whitefield – A relaxed outdoor stay and play for under 5s and their grown-ups 🌳🐝☀️☕🌿

Pop along to Old Town Hall Gardens, Whitefield for a friendly morning of nature, crafts, play, conversation and brews. There’s no need to book, it’s completely free, and you can stay for as much or as little of the session as you like.

The next session is Tuesday 8th September, 10am–11.30am, with an Autumn Equinox theme. Other session dates listed on the poster below.

Everyone is welcome – whether you go along with friends or just fancy getting out of the house and meeting some new people.

The group will be outdoors, whatever the weather, so pop on some clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting a little wet or muddy!

Art on a Postcard will showcase a wonderful mix of artwork, from abstracts and landscapes to pieces inspired by local life – all at the home of the world-renowned Besses o’ th’ Barn Brass Band.

Another fascinating story has emerged from behind the stones at Bury Parish Church

While helping to record the historic ledger stones, a volunteer came across the memorial of Thomas Leigh Crompton (1806–1852), his first wife Ellen, and six of their children.

Curious to find out more, they began researching the family and discovered that Thomas had a particularly special connection to the church – he was once its sexton, following in the footsteps of his father.

The research has uncovered a moving story of family life, loss and a connection to the church stretching back generations.
