You might think Creative Witch Designs came out of nowhere.

It didn’t.

In fact, the more I look back, the more I realise I’ve been finding my way back here for most of my life.

Art was my favourite subject at school, and what I really wanted to do when I left was go to art college. Financially, that simply wasn’t an option, so that dream had to be put to one side.

Years later, I got the opportunity to study Display & Design in Clerkenwell, London. I grabbed it with both hands.

I studied everything from photography and prop making to typography, colour, composition and visual presentation. I left with **11 distinctions** and went on to work in visual merchandising for an independent department store.

That creative part of me never really went anywhere.

When I started my own business around 15 or 16 years ago, I built my first website myself. Then rebuilt it. Updated it. Changed it. Learned more about WordPress, and probably changed it another hundred times because, well… if you know, you know.

About five or six years ago, I even launched the original Creative Witch Designs and built websites for around ten different practitioners.

Over the years, I reckon I’ve probably built around 25 websites. So this isn't really a new direction. It feels much more like a return.

But why now?

At the end of last year, after a pretty turbulent time personally, my mum asked me a very simple question:

“Are you actually happy?”

She wondered whether constantly working with the past through Ancestral Alchemy, while holding space for other people to revisit theirs, was keeping part of me there too.

That question stayed with me.

Eventually, I had to admit that I simply didn’t have the bandwidth to hold that kind of space anymore. It had started to feel heavy, and mis-aligned, and I think that’s partly why I disappeared from social media earlier this year. I didn’t know what I wanted to say because, underneath it all, I wasn’t entirely sure who I wanted to be in my business anymore.

Then in March, I put something out into the universe.

I wanted six women who would trust me to create their websites for my portfolio.

All six spaces filled almost immediately, and something shifted.

Oh my God, I LOVED it.

I loved being creative again.

I loved listening to these women tell me about their businesses. Why they started. What mattered to them. What they wanted their work to become, and then taking everything they gave me and turning it into something they could actually SEE.

The brand.

The words.

The colours.

The imagery.

The website.

Something that felt like THEM, and somewhere in all of that, I realised something. My work has changed, but one of my greatest gifts hasn’t.

My Life’s Work Gene Key is Guidance, and it tracks exactly with how I’ve always worked. My job has never been to hand someone the answer. It’s to ask the question that helps them find the answer already sitting inside them. I create environments where epiphanies happen, and that’s exactly what I’m doing now.

A woman can come to me knowing her work inside out but struggling to translate it into a brand, words or a website.

So I listen.

I ask questions.

I notice what’s missing.

I spot what’s confusing.

I see the connections, and somewhere amongst everything she tells me, I begin to see the business she has been trying to show the world, and eventually, it becomes a website that actually feels like HER.

And perhaps one of the biggest advantages I bring to this work is that I understand the world my clients inhabit because I’ve inhabited it too. You don’t have to explain the “woo” to me. You don’t have to make what you do sound more corporate, conventional or palatable so that your web designer understands it. You certainly don’t have to dim your magic.

I already get it.

So no, Creative Witch Designs didn’t suddenly appear out of nowhere.

When I look back across art, display and design, visual merchandising, 16+ years of building my own business, WordPress, branding, writing, spiritual work and all those websites I’ve created along the way…

The breadcrumbs were there all along.

I just finally followed them home.

FREE website design.

I’ve seen a few companies recently advertising this, and naturally, that catches your attention.

A whole website. Built for free?

But when you follow the offer through and look at what is actually included, the picture can look rather different.

The website build may be free, but you are required to commit to their hosting package for 12 months. Then you discover that things such as Search Engine Optimisation aren’t necessarily included as standard.

Because there is a big difference between having a website and having a website that has been intentionally built to help people FIND you.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation.

In simple terms, it helps search engines such as Google understand what your website is about, what you offer and who your website might be relevant to when somebody searches online.

If someone is actively searching for a Reiki practitioner, spiritual coach, holistic therapist, sound healer, yoga teacher or wellbeing practitioner in their area, you want to give Google the right information to understand that your website could be relevant to them.

That means thinking about your page titles, headings, written content, images, descriptions, page structure, internal links and the language your potential clients are actually using when they search.

SEO isn’t a magic switch and nobody can guarantee you the number one spot on Google.

But you can build a website with strong SEO foundations from the beginning rather than creating something beautiful and only afterwards wondering how anybody is going to find it.

Then there’s marketing.

A website doesn’t market itself simply because you’ve published it.

Your social media, email list, Google presence, blogs, referrals, collaborations and other marketing activity all create pathways back to your website.

The website becomes the place where somebody can properly explore you, understand what you offer and decide whether you’re the person they want to work with.

A little sneak peek from my latest brand shoot with the very talented Nikki of Nikki Terra.

Nikki has been behind my brand photography for years, and there is a reason I keep going back to her.

She gets me.

Not just how I look, but the feeling I want my photographs to carry. A little witchy. A little unconventional. Creative. Warm. Earthy. Professional without becoming polished to the point where I no longer recognise myself, and that matters enormously when you're building a website.

You can have beautiful fonts, gorgeous colours and carefully written copy, but if the photography doesn't belong in that world, something will always feel slightly off.

Your photographs are doing far more work than simply filling spaces on a page.

Before somebody reads a word, they are already forming an impression of you. Your images help them understand your personality, your energy, the quality of your work and whether they feel drawn to stay and find out more.

It's also why poor-quality photographs can let an otherwise beautiful website down. Blurry images, badly lit photographs, inconsistent editing or images that simply don't reflect the person behind the business can instantly change how professional and considered the whole site feels.

Professional brand photography doesn't mean stiff poses against a white wall.

Quite the opposite.

The best brand photography should make someone feel as though they're getting a glimpse of the real person behind the business.

That's what Nikki manages to capture for me every time.

These photographs feel like me, and as I put the finishing touches to the new Creative Witch Designs website, they're helping me create something that doesn't just look beautiful.

You know the feeling.

You’ve shown up consistently. Posted the reels. Shared your work. Replied to comments and messages. Built an audience and created a business that, for the most part, lives on social media, and that’s fine. Until something happens that reminds you just how little control you actually have over it.

Facebook goes down.

Your account gets restricted or flagged.

The algorithm changes again and suddenly far fewer people are seeing what you post.

The reality is, however much time and energy we put into our social media platforms, we don’t actually own them, and for me, that’s one of the biggest reasons to have your own website.

Somewhere people can find out who you are, understand what you offer, see examples of your work and decide whether you’re the right person for them.

It can also be found through Google and AI searches by people who are already looking for exactly the kind of work you do, and unlike social media, a piece of content on your website doesn’t disappear down a feed after 24 hours.

I haven't wanted to......

I stepped back at the start of this year. Not because I ran out of ideas, but because I ran out of bandwidth to fake it. Something was shifting and I could feel it long before I could name it, so instead of pushing through, I went against every instinct that told me to keep showing up and just let myself rest.

In March, I tentatively asked for six women to be portfolio showcases for Creative Witch Designs. Tentatively, because I wasn't sure anyone would say yes to a version of me that had gone quiet.

You did.

Now I'm back, and I'm asking again.

This month, I'm looking for a small number of women to be portfolio showcases, spiritual entrepreneurs, holistic practitioners, coaches and healers ready for a website that actually reflects the depth of what you do. (at a heavily reduced price)

Is your website still on your "one day" list?

Jo came to me with a clear sense of who she is and what her patients need. My job was to build something that reflected that, cleanly and honestly. She has an artistic background, a sharp eye for detail, and a real warmth that runs through everything she does, so the site needed to carry all of that without getting in the way of the message.
