Esthwaite Water

Esthwaite Water Esthwaite water is a stunning 300 acre lake offering winter pike, coarse and brown trout fishing from bank or boat.
(232)

It also hosts a picturesque boathouse cafe, serving up delicious hot & cold food & drink. At 280 acres, year round access and a choice of boat or bank fishing, Esthwaite has something for everybody no mater what your level of experience. Check out our Services tab to find out how we can get you fishing. Originally a Rainbow Trout farm (2010), Esthwaite is getting back to its best with a new approach to stocking since 2017 when the business changed hands. With 10,000 pounds of top quality 2-5 pound Brown Trout being stocked annually and a catch and release policy the trout fishing is improving every year. We are an "open water" meaning we are open to Black Beck to the north and Cunsey Beck to the south allowing the free movement of migratory species. This means that we can only target trout within season, 15th March to 30th September. However unlike most of our peers we allow trout fishing using any method (fly, spin or worm) so even complete novices can catch a trout in season. Esthwaite is also legendary for its Pike fishing, the lake record being very close to the British Record at 46 pounds. Again the Pike fishing is improving year on year, rapidly recovering from the 2010-17 period when trout stocking was patchy. As a result of our stocking policy introduced for the 2017/18 season we have gone from 3 fish over twenty pounds to 40 fish over twenty pounds in the 2019/20 season. Up to the end of December in this 2020/21 season we are at 24 fish over twenty pounds with the biggest fish going 29 pounds 6 oz. By our estimation our big females are putting on 3 - 5 pounds per season. Again to continue building the fishery we have a strict self imposed pike season, 1st October to 31st March. This leaves our pike to spawn in peace in the spring and prevents premature mortality caused by being caught during the warm summer months. We allow fly, lure and dead bait fishing in season but none of these methods are suitable for novices unless you are with someone experienced at handling 20 pound + pike or one of our experienced guides. I have heard Esthwaite described as "the best natural coarse fishery in the North" on many occasions, likened to "Ireland in the 80's". For me its clear that as our coarse fishermen experiment, trying out new techniques and areas, the better it gets. The best days fishing I have heard of recently was a 300 pound bag of bream with 80 fish in the 2 - 6 pound range and we have had bream to 15 pounds. Roach to 2 pounds and hybrids to 6 pounds are also on the cards. The most abundant fish in Esthwaite however is everyone's first fish, the humble Perch. It is common for a guided perch trip to yield 150 fish, a fantastic family day out. We point our novice anglers in this direction in high summer when the trout are not biting. We offer year round coarse fishing from the bank and there are no restrictions on bait though we would ask that if you are catching trout or pike to change your tactics.

Hi everyone

Sadly we were broken into last night and a lot of tools and tackle etc has been stolen.

We are back up and running as normal but tbh upset and bloody annoyed that someone would do this.

We have cctv and are working with Cumbria police to try and catch these lowlifes. If anyone saw a white car or has dash and footage from around 1.30 to 2.30 am this morning that would be handy. They were parked at the top of the drive for a while.

In the meantime time do us a favour and share the post, main items lost and likely being sold are;-

Various stilhl tool ie chainsaw, simmer etc
Various blue handled wiseman tools
Chargers and tool batteries - dewalt
Pike pro terminal tackle
Large amount of savage gear lures
Jrc defender weigh slingsVarious jrc rods
Pro logic scales and unhooking matts
Pro logic Pliers
Savage gear nets
Pro logic reels
Load of chocolate bars!!
Much more too sadly but still sorting out.

As we say please share this and keep
An eye out for us at car boots, eBay etc.

We are running as normal and taking bookings as normal. Nothing will be cancelled.

In the mean time tight lines, pike season soon : )

🎣 ANOTHER CRACKING DAY ON THE MIGHTY WINDERMERE! 🎣
It’s always great to hear reports from anglers enjoying the fantastic sport available on our privately owned day-ticket stretch of Windermere, on the Graythwaite Estate — and this latest report from Paul Hotchkiss certainly caught my attention! 👌
Paul spent the day on Peg 7 at Baswicks, where he encountered some seriously hectic sport using feeder tactics and sweetcorn on the hook. 🌽🎣
His final weight was an impressive 71lb 12oz — but the weight alone doesn't tell the full story!
Paul had just 7 Bream during the session, meaning the vast majority of that impressive total was made up of Roach, including some really good-quality fish. 🐟👏
This is exactly what makes fishing the Windermere stretch so exciting. You never quite know what is going to turn up, and when the Roach get their heads down, the sport can be absolutely relentless.
For me, as a fishery manager, it’s particularly pleasing to see anglers enjoying not just the bigger Bream, but the quality and sheer numbers of Roach that this incredible lake can produce. It’s a great indication of the diversity and health of the fishery. 💪🌊
Well done Paul — great angling, buddy! 👏🎣
Hopefully we'll see you back at Baswicks again soon.
If you fancy experiencing the fishing for yourself, why not book a day on our private Windermere day-ticket stretch at Baswicks, Graythwaite Estate?

🎣🔥 ESTHWAITE WATER PIKE PAIRS – LURE ONLY COMPETITION 🔥🎣
📅 Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th September
It’s nearly time! 👀🎣
Our Pike Pairs Lure Only Competition is just around the corner and, with a full house of anglers, it’s shaping up to be an absolute cracker! 💥
This competition is a bit of a curtain opener to our Pike season proper, which officially gets underway on 1st October and runs through until 31st March.
With the Pike having had months without any angling pressure, prospects are looking extremely good for the weekend. Add in some seriously high-calibre anglers to the line-up and we could be in for some spectacular fishing! 🐊🎣
📜 COMPETITION RULES
Please see a copy of the competition rules below. 👇
I’ll also send each pair a digital copy of the rules once you have been in touch with me.
That way, there’s no need for bits of paper getting wet, blowing around or disappearing in the bottom of the boat! 😂🌧️🎣
📢 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL COMPETITORS
I’ll be away Bass fishing for the first two weeks of September, so could all competitors please WhatsApp me between 20th–24th September with the following information:

🚤 BRINGING YOUR OWN BOAT?

⚠️ Please do NOT bring your boat down to the launch area near the café.
⛺ OVERNIGHTING
For anyone wanting to stay over, you are welcome to overnight on the grass between the car park and the café – completely FREE of charge. 👍
I’ll be here for the whole weekend, so I’ll be around to welcome everyone arriving on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
I’m genuinely looking forward to this one! 🙌
The Pike have had a good long rest, the competition is a full house, and there are some excellent anglers signed up.
🎣🐊 It’s shaping up to be an epic weekend on Esthwaite Water – I can’t wait!
Bring on the Pike! 💥

🎣🔥 THE POST BOX PEGS ARE ON FIRE! 🔥🎣
Now this is what you call a serious bag of fish! 😍👏
A huge well done to venue regular Nick Aldersey, who has been enjoying some fantastic sport off the Post Box Pe gs, banking a staggering 140lb across three keepnets! 💪🐟
Nick put together this cracking haul using a simple but highly effective combination of corn and maggots 🌽🪱 — proving once again that keeping things simple can produce some seriously impressive results!
🎥 Here’s just one of the three keepnets being released back into Esthwaite Water. What a sight! 👌
The Post Box Pegs have been absolutely on fire this week, with plenty of big bags of quality coarse fish being taken. The lake is certainly showing its colours at the moment, and there’s some fantastic sport to be had! 🔥🎣
Well done Nick, and thanks for the update, mate — it’s always appreciated! 👍
Fancy a day on the bank and the chance of a bag to remember? 🎣
📲 Book your peg online through our website or telephone the Fishery Ticket Office on 07553 316097.
We’ll see you on the bank! 👊🎣

🌿 The Mystery of Esthwaite’s Tench 🎣
There are still plenty of mysteries lurking beneath the surface of Esthwaite Water, and yesterday Andy Schofield uncovered another little piece of the puzzle! 👀🎣
While feeder fishing from Pepper Point, Andy landed this absolutely cracking Tench (Tinca tinca), taken on a simple but clearly irresistible double sweetcorn hook bait. 🌽🌽
A huge well done to Andy on a fantastic capture! 👏 What makes this fish particularly interesting is the story behind Esthwaite’s Tench population — because, quite honestly, we don't really know where they came from! 🤔
They have certainly been resident in the lake for many decades. I first became aware of their presence almost 30 years ago, when we used to trap Eels using fyke nets.
At that time, the Environment Agency stipulated that, as a condition of using the fyke nets, we had to fit otter guards to the entrances. These were designed to prevent Otters swimming into the nets and drowning themselves. 🦦
The downside was that larger Tench couldn't get through the guards either. The juveniles, however, could — and I distinctly remember being surprised on several occasions when lifting the nets to find numerous tiny Tench alive inside them.
And here's where the mystery gets even more intriguing… 🧐
The larger Tench are few and far between, and interestingly, the specimens that do turn up seem to come predominantly from the southern end of the lake.
Around 15 years ago, when the Environment Agency carried out DNA water sampling on Esthwaite, Tinca tinca showed up in samples taken from that bottom end of the lake, but not elsewhere.
Coincidence? A localised population? Or perhaps there are considerably more Tench in Esthwaite than we realise, quietly going about their business beneath the lilies and w**d? 🌿
It certainly wouldn't surprise me.
Esthwaite is a relatively shallow, highly productive lake with extensive w**d growth and plenty of lily beds — exactly the sort of habitat Tench love. And when it comes to food, they certainly aren't short of options.
The lake has extensive bloodworm beds and a rich natural food larder, giving these fish everything they need to grow on to some serious proportions. 💪🐟
So, could there be some very big Tench lurking in Esthwaite?
I strongly suspect there are. 😉
Their presence is just another fascinating part of the biodiversity and character of this incredibly productive lake, and one that continues to intrigue me after all these years.
🎣 So, a challenge to our anglers…
If you're fishing Esthwaite and fancy putting some time into targeting Tench, we'd certainly be interested to see how you get on.
There are sure to be some bigger fish out there — and who knows, perhaps Andy's cracking specimen is just the start of something rather interesting! 👀🔥
Well done again Andy — a superb Tench and a fascinating capture! 👏🎣
