2 weeks ago on the 28th-30th November, the Oxford Brookes Table Tennis team played in the biggest BUCS table tennis event of the year, the BUCS Individual Championships.
On day 1 Jared and Nicolas played the doubles where they were able to win both games comfortably to win their group. They then went on to beat an Oxford doubles pairing in the R64 but unfortunately lost in a close game in the R32 against a Loughborough pairing.
Day 2 were the singles group stages. This year used a new format where groups were increased from 4 to 5 with only 2 going through into the main draw and the removal of a consolation draw. Unfortunately for Nicolas and Lucas, they were grouped with seeded players and knocked out the groups with Nicolas facing off against Dennis Lin, the son of the Olympic gold medalist Deng Yaping, and Lucas facing off against Danny Bajwa, 5th ranked player in Scotland and Scottish national team player. Nicolas ended up winning 2 matches and Lucas ended up winning 1.
As for Jared, although he didn’t have a seeded group, his matches were still tough, playing players from Cambridge, Bath, Reading and Bristol. After Jared fired up his forehand, he was able to win 3 matches coming second in his group and moved onto the main draw.
On day 3, Jared started the day with a 3-0 walkover against a player from KCL in the R128. But then in the R64 he played the Number 1 seed Ben Piggott. Although losing, the performance by Jared was unbelievable hitting unreal forehands and backhands.
Although Nicolas and Lucas lost in the groups and Jared lost to the number 1 seed, they all had a great time at Nottingham and hopefully the Brookes team can come back stronger next year having more players advancing further into the tournament.

3 weeks ago on the 29th November - 1st December, the Oxford Brookes table tennis team went to play in the annual BUCS table tennis individual championship.
On the first day Lewis and Nicolas played doubles, winning comfortably and making it through the group stage but were unfortunately knocked out by the semi-finalist in the round of 64.
Day 2 was full of group stage matches for the singles event. Lewis, Nicolas and Corentin were all able to get out of the group stages to play-off in the main knockout draw with Corentin even winning his group. Lewis and Nicolas came second in their group due to some unlucky draws. Lucas was unfortunately drawn against the 8th seed of the event and, with a tough group, came last in his group.
In day 3, unfortunately more bad luck for Nicolas as he was drawn to play against the number 1 seed of the event and was not able to put up a fight.
However, Lewis was playing unbelievably and made light work of his opponents getting him through to the round of 32 where he unfortunately lost to the finalist and 2nd seed of the event, Ben Piggott.
After winning his group, Corentin had a bye in the first round and played a close match in the round of 128, winning narrowly 14-12 in the 5th set putting him through to the next round. He then faced the number 23 seed in the round of 64 and, although defeated, put up a good fight with winning some unbelievable rallies.
After losing in his group, Lucas went on to play in the plate knockout event where he won the first round in a close 3-2 match showing his great resilience and determination to win. Unfortunately he was then knocked out by a strong Loughborough player in the round of 64.
A huge congratulations as well to Corentin who showed outstanding sportsmanship and playing amazing rallies which lead to the BUCS Officials awarding him with Player Of The Event Award.
