Sensei Josh was promoted to Shihan. Congratulations Josh Hughes , you have worked hard and have earnt this. We are all very proud of you! Being a senior grade you have always trained hard applied yourself in every aspect of karate and been an inspiration to those around you.

Fantastic energy in the dojo last night! 💥

Our in house competition saw the students take on Kata, kids kick for the little ones and some Kumite to end the evening. The competitions happen quarterly with scores being tallied up over the year.

It was great to see such focus, discipline, and spirit by all 👊

Back in November, our Sandokai Karate students travelled to Wales to compete — and they did us proud. 💪
From strong kata performances to determined kumite bouts, every student showed discipline, respect, and true karate spirit on the competition floor.

Competing isn’t just about medals — it’s about confidence, resilience, and stepping outside your comfort zone. Seeing our students test themselves at this level is exactly why we train the way we do. 👊

🥋MEET SHIHAN KEVIN GILBERT 🥋

Always ready to great you with a smile, Shihan Gilbert has spent many years honing his expertise and now spends the majority of his time in the dojo passing on that wealth of knowledge to all who train.

Kevin’s real superpower? Technical excellence. Whether it’s nailing a kata, fine-tuning a syllabus move, or stepping onto the competition floor, Shihan Gilbert has always led by example. From winning trophies (lots of them!) to coaching squads at local and national events, he’s done it all — and still keeps it simple: train hard, train right.

Today, as a Senior Instructor of Sandokai, he:
✅ Oversees senior training & Kumite squads
✅ Produces top-class students
✅ Keeps Sandokai’s standard of quality sky-high

Oh, and his Dan grade journey speaks for itself… climbing every step from Shodan (1989) to Hachidan (2024).

👋 Next time you see him, say hi — even if he is the quiet one, he’s got decades of Karate wisdom (and some great stories from the mat!).
