One of the hardest things about getting healthier isn't knowing what to do.

It's recognising when your own brain is giving you a very convincing reason not to do it. 🐍

And here's the question:

Are you genuinely too busy to prioritise your health… or have you become very good at finding important things to do instead?

We see this with some incredibly successful people we work with.

Business owners. Senior professionals. People with demanding careers and huge responsibilities.

But we see it with mums too.

Work. School runs. After-school clubs. Homework. Shopping. Family commitments. The list never seems to end.

And that's where “snake thoughts” can creep in.

Not stupid thoughts.

Not lies.

Thoughts that sound completely reasonable, but quietly encourage avoidance and rationalisation:

"I'll start when work calms down."

"The kids need me tonight."

"I'll get back into it when things settle."

"I haven't got time today."

Sometimes those thoughts are absolutely justified.

But if they become your automatic response, they can keep you putting your own health off indefinitely.

Your brain will often choose the "most comfortable option", rather than the most helpful one.

So don't blindly trust every thought you have.

Pause. Question it.

"Is this genuinely impossible today… or is this simply the easier choice?"

That's something we teach our clients: successful professionals, busy mums and everyone in between.

Not to choose between their career, family and health.

To learn how to do both. 💪

Because looking after yourself isn't something you earn once everything else is finished.

It's part of building a life you actually get to enjoy.

THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER… 👀

The kids are back at school. 🎒
Routines are coming back.
And the gym will start getting busier again.

And that's completely fine. ❤️

Six weeks of holidays can completely disrupt your routine.

But here's where I want to challenge you…

Imagine your child came home today with homework:

🥩 Hit 150g of protein every day
🍱 Plan your meals for the week
🚶‍♀️ Move your body every day
📈 Find small ways to improve, week by week

Would you just say:

"I haven't got time."
"The kids come first."
"I'll start when things settle down."

Of course you wouldn't.

You'd help them.
You'd plan it.
You'd shop for it.
You'd make sure they had everything they needed.

Because it's important.

So why don't we give ourselves the same level of importance?

And this isn't just about you.

Your children are watching. 👀

Research has consistently found an association between parents' physical activity and their children's physical activity. One systematic review of 39 studies found a positive relationship between parent and child activity, while other research specifically supports the importance of parental role modelling.

They don't just learn from what you tell them.

They learn from what they see.

They see whether you look after yourself.
They see whether you keep promises to yourself.
They see whether you make your health a priority.

And maybe that's one of the best lessons you can give them.

Not perfection.
Not sacrifice.
But showing them what it looks like to keep working towards your own potential. ❤️

The holidays are over.

The routine is coming back.

Don't just get the kids back into theirs.

Get yourself back into yours. 💪🔥

“Just because I give you advice doesn’t mean I’m smarter than you. It means I’ve already done some stupid things.”

One of the biggest struggles in 2026 isn't access to information.

It's knowing what to unlearn and relearn. 🧠

We have more fitness advice than ever.

And yet, so many people are still confused.

Carbs are bad.

You need to detox.

You need to eat less.

You need to train more.

Someone has the perfect answer.

Then someone else has the opposite one. 🤯

The truth is, when a good coach gives you advice, it doesn't mean they're smarter than you.

They've just travelled a little further down the road.

They've made mistakes.

They've tested things.

They've changed old beliefs.

And they've learnt what actually works.

That can take patience.

And sometimes, a leap of faith.

Especially if you've spent years being sold slimming plans, quick fixes or pyramid schemes.

You want something simple.

You want it to work this time.

And that's completely understandable.

But learning to trust yourself again can take time.

Sometimes 12 months or more.

Our job isn't to point a finger and say, “Do this.”

It's to guide you.

Think of it like a journey with your children.

If you've already travelled the road, you'd warn them about the roadworks, the dangerous bits and the shortcuts.

You'd also point out the best views. ❤️

That's what coaching should be.

Not telling you how to live.

Helping you navigate the journey.

And gradually, helping you trust yourself enough to drive it alone. 💚💪

Can I share something that comes up in almost every first conversation I have with a new client?

Comparison.

Sometimes it's comparing themselves to other women, someone they saw at the school gate, a fitness account they follow, a before-and-after that made them feel like they're doing everything wrong. And sometimes, it's something even more painful: comparing themselves to who they used to be. A photo from their 30s, a dress size they haven't been in years, a level of energy they remember but can't seem to find anymore.

Here's what I know after working with clients for over 3 decades: comparison is one of the biggest invisible barriers to progress. Not willpower. Not time. Not the right plan. The quiet, relentless habit of measuring yourself against a standard that was never fair to begin with.

Because that woman in the photo from ten years ago? She was living in a different body, at a different life stage, with different hormones, different stresses, and a different set of circumstances. She is not your baseline. She is not your goal. She is not a failure waiting to happen.

And those women on Instagram? You're seeing the highlight reel. Not the early mornings, the setbacks, the context, just the result.

One of the most important things I do in my 6-week programme, and in my longer-term coaching, is help women reframe what progress actually looks like. Not the scales. Not a number from 2015. But genuine markers: how your energy feels, what you can lift, how your clothes sit, how you're sleeping, how you talk to yourself in the mirror.

That shift in perspective is often what makes the physical results possible. Because when you stop running away from a version of yourself you think you should be, and start building a version of yourself you actually want to live in, that's when things really move.

If this sounds familiar, I'd really love to chat. No pressure, no pitch, just a conversation about where you're at and what might help. Drop me a message or comment below. 💛

“If you want to make the wrong decision, ask everyone.”

— Naval Ravikant

Social media is wonderfully awful. 📱😂

Everyone is fighting for your attention.

And as a fitness professional, I've noticed something…

Most of what you see is probably true.

But it’s usually irrelevant to you.

One person says fast.

Another says eat more protein.

Someone else says cut carbs.

Another says train every day.

Suddenly you're left wondering whether you're doing anything right. 🤯

More information doesn't always create better decisions.

Sometimes it just creates doubt.

Imagine how refreshing it would be to tell your PT:

“I absolutely indulged this weekend.” 🍕🍷

And instead of judgement or guilt, they say:

“Brilliant. Did you enjoy it?” 😁

Then you talk about how good the food was, the drinks, the time with friends… and then you talk about getting back on track. ✅

No drama.

No guilt.

No punishment. ❤️

Because we're all human.

That's how we want Effective Fitness to feel.

A place where you can be honest.

A place where you can learn. 🧠

A place where you can make mistakes without feeling like you've failed.

And stay with us long enough and something else starts to happen…

You stop looking for someone else to tell you what to do.

You start trusting your own decisions.

You start believing in yourself. 💪💚

That's the real goal. ❤️🖤

I want to share something that doesn't get talked about nearly enough, and once you know it, it completely changes how you think about food.

As women move through their 40s and into perimenopause, research shows they can lose nearly 6% of their lean muscle mass. And almost half of that loss happens during perimenopause, not after it. Before you've even reached menopause.

Now, muscle isn't just about looking toned. Muscle is your metabolic engine. It's what helps you burn calories at rest, keeps your energy up, protects your joints, and keeps you physically capable of doing the things you love. Losing it is one of the main reasons so many women find their body composition shifting in their 40s even when nothing about their diet has changed.

The good news? You can do something about it. And it's more straightforward than most people think.

The biggest change most women need to make is eating more protein. Not in a complicated, faddy way, just consistently making sure each main meal has a good protein source (roughly 25–30g). That might look like eggs and smoked salmon at breakfast, a chicken salad at lunch, and a piece of fish for your tea. Simple, satisfying food, not a punishing meal plan.

Current UK guidelines actually underestimate how much protein women in midlife need, and research now suggests aiming 25–50% higher than the standard recommendation.

Inside my 6-week programme, this is one of the first things we look at: building a way of eating that's genuinely sustainable for your lifestyle, not a short-term fix that leaves you hungry and frustrated.

One of my clients, a mum of three with a demanding job and barely a minute to herself, told me that after a previous coach told her to, she'd spent years eating "clean" but always felt starving. We removed all the misinformation from the conversation, and then worked on her protein intake together; the hunger went. The energy came back. And for the first time, her body started changing in the way she'd always hoped.

If you're doing all the "right" things but not seeing the results, after working in the industry for over 3 decades, I've found it's usually the supposedly "right" things that are one of the biggest issues. Drop me a message. I'd love to help.

💚 Client Recognition: Janet 💚

You've probably seen us talk about our Transformation Programme.

Yes, weight loss is part of it.

But as coaches, we often see the biggest change happening in your mind. 🧠

Going from 3,000 steps to 8,000 a day is impressive. 👏

But give it a year and 8,000 becomes normal.

Food is the same.

Learning to enjoy a big meal without guilt, then simply getting back on track the next day, is a skill.

Saying no to a social occasion because you value your sleep. 😴

Making choices because they fit the life you want.

That is transformation.

Des and Janet completely get this and have been doing this for years now.

Fitness and strength training aren't a short-term project for them. It's becoming how they live.

Although we still strongly disagree about granola. 😂

The body changes.

But the real transformation is when the behaviours become normal.

That's when six weeks becomes six months.

And eventually, it's just you. ❤️🖤

Can we talk about something that barely anyone mentions when it comes to losing weight and feeling better in your 40s?

Sleep.

Not just getting more of it, but understanding why, in perimenopause and beyond, your sleep is being sabotaged from the inside out.

Research now shows that over half of women going through perimenopause experience significant sleep disruption. And it's not just inconvenient; it has a knock-on effect on almost everything else. When you don't sleep well, your stress hormone cortisol rises, your hunger hormones go haywire, your cravings spike (hello, 4pm sugar crash), and your body holds onto fat, particularly around the middle.

So if you've been trying to eat better and move more but feeling like you're getting nowhere? It might not be your willpower. It might be your sleep.

The women I work with are often surprised that one of the first things we look at together isn't their diet or their training plan; it's their sleep and recovery. Because without that foundation, everything else is so much harder.

One client described herself as running on empty for so long she'd forgotten what it felt like to have energy. A few weeks into working together, with simple, sustainable tweaks to her routine (For most, that usually means not scrolling social media for 2 hours before trying to go to sleep!), she messaged me to say she'd slept through the night for the first time in months. From there, everything started to shift: her energy, her mood, her results.

If you're tired of being tired (literally), I'd love to chat. My 6-week programme and longer-term coaching options are designed around your life, your schedule, your hormones, your starting point. No one-size-fits-all nonsense.

Drop a comment below or send me a message; let's have a conversation about where you're at and what might actually help. 💛

“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.”

— Richard Feynman

What has that got to do with weight loss and strength training? 🤔

More than you might think.

Good coaching is about learning to separate emotion from the task.

You might feel awful when you realise that over the years, being a mum or dad, working, stress, and life have seen three stone creep on.

But emotion won't solve it.

Clear thinking will. 🧠

Those three stones probably took years to arrive.

So why would you expect it to disappear in 6 weeks?

Learn.

Understand nutrition. 🍎

Learn how strength training works. 💪

Experiment.

Adjust.

Keep going.

Clear thinking also protects you from the latest cleanse, miracle diet, supplement or pyramid scheme. 🚫

Will it be easy?

No.

And that's a good thing.

We're designed to experience discomfort, learn from it and adapt.

Every difficult experience gives you information.

And imagine how useful that knowledge becomes when you're able to pass it on to your children. ❤️

This is why coaching matters.

You don't have to figure everything out yourself.

You just need to be willing to learn, be honest about where you are and keep taking the next step.

Don't let emotion make the decision.

Learn. Adapt. Progress. ❤️🖤

Can we talk about the comparison trap?

Because I think it's one of the heaviest things women carry into their 40s and one of the things that quietly undermines their progress more than almost anything else.

Here's what I see, again and again. A woman comes to me wanting to feel healthier, stronger, more like herself. But buried underneath that is something else: she's comparing herself. To other women. To her friends. To strangers on Instagram with seemingly perfect bodies and boundless energy. And most painfully of all, to a younger version of herself.

"I used to be able to eat anything and stay slim."
"I look at photos from my 30s, and I barely recognise myself."
"She's the same age as me, why does she look like that and I don't?"

If any of those sound familiar, I want to sit with you in that for a moment because I know how much it hurts. And then I want to gently challenge it.

About comparing to other women online: what you're comparing yourself to is a carefully curated, filtered, often heavily edited highlight reel. Nobody is posting their 6am face, their bloated Tuesday, their bad skin day, or their 3am cry. Most of the versions of "health" and "fitness" presented on social media are not reality, and it is absolutely not a benchmark for your life.

About comparing to your younger self: that woman in those photos was probably criticising herself too. She was likely worrying about not being good enough in ways you can't even remember now. She didn't have the perspective, the experience, or the self-knowledge you've built in the years since. And crucially, she's gone. You cannot go back to being her, and you shouldn't want to, because you are more than she was.

Research is increasingly clear on this: social comparison has a measurable negative effect on body image and mental wellbeing in midlife women. And women who shift away from appearance-based goals towards strength, energy, capability, and how they feel, consistently report higher satisfaction with their health journey and better long-term results.

This is something I pay real attention to with my clients. We talk about what they actually want to feel, not just what they want to look like. We celebrate what the body can do, not just how it appears. And we actively work on quieting the voice that says they should be different from who they are right now.

My client Tracy (53) said something I'll never forget: "I spent 20 years trying to get my body back to what it was at 30. Working with you was the first time someone helped me figure out who I wanted to be at 53. And honestly? I like her a lot more."

That's the work. That's what changes things.

If you're ready to invest in yourself, not the woman you were, but the woman you are right now, I have spaces available for my 6 Week Programme and longer-term coaching. I can genuinely say that by the end of the year, you will be amazed at the change in yourself.

Drop me a message, and let's start working on this together.
