Great North Run day is nearly here! 😆
We’ll be out on the course on Sunday, cheering you all on …keep an eye out for us around Mile 3.

Just a couple of tips: don’t stretch cold muscles, a few minutes of easy jogging and leg swings before the start does far more, take an old layer to the start line a jumper or joggers you don’t mind ditching and keep on right up to the start you’ll be stood around a while and it’s chilly first thing (it all gets collected for charity, so no waste), ease into your pace rather than sprinting off with the adrenaline and don’t try anything new on the day!

If we haven’t got your bib number yet, pop it in our DMs so we can spot you. 👀
Good luck, everyone, go enjoy it! 🏃

Update: now taken

A rare last-minute appointment has just become available.

Thursday at 1:45pm is now available for a sports massage or treatment appointment.

If you’re looking for some final treatment ahead of the Great North Run, or simply need an appointment for an existing niggle, this could be the slot for you.

These appointments don’t come up often, so if you’d like it, get in touch as soon as possible to secure the slot.

Pain travelling down your leg? It doesn't always start in your leg.
Pain, tingling or other symptoms can sometimes travel from the lower back or buttock into the leg.

And when that happens, the location of the pain isn't necessarily the whole story.

We want to understand where your symptoms start, what changes them and how they're affecting your movement and day-to-day activities.

That helps us work out what's going on and, importantly, what you can do about it.
Sciatica can look different from person to person, which is why there isn't always one exercise or one approach that works for everyone.

We've gone into more detail about sciatica, what it can feel like and how physiotherapy can help in our new blog.

MARANOIA.
noun
The irrational fear that you haven't done enough training, you're not ready, or that something is suddenly going to go wrong before race day.
Sound familiar?
Less than Two weeks before the GNR, it's very easy to start questioning everything.
Your legs feel heavy.
A niggle you've barely noticed suddenly seems much more important.
You wonder whether you've done enough.
You start thinking about everything that could possibly go wrong.
That's maranoia.

And while it's common, the answer isn't usually to panic and cram in extra training.
With two weeks to go, the fitness you've built is largely in the bank. The focus now should be on sensible training, recovery and managing any genuine niggles.
I've put together a Great North Run guide covering training, injury management and what to consider as race day approaches.

Pain can make you want to stop everything.
And sometimes a period of rest really is appropriate.

But complete rest isn’t automatically the answer.

For many musculoskeletal problems, finding the right level of movement and gradually building your capacity can be more useful than avoiding movement altogether.

The right approach depends on what’s causing the pain, how irritable it is and what you’re trying to get back to.

It’s not always about doing more. It’s about finding the right amount. 💪

You don’t always need perfect posture when you’re exercising.

There’s a lot of advice out there about how an exercise should look the perfect position, the perfect technique, the perfect way to move.

But your body isn’t a machine, and movement doesn’t have to look identical every time to be useful.

When we’re exercising, we’re interested in things like how an exercise feels, what you can currently manage, whether you’re building strength and whether you’re able to do it safely and consistently.

Your technique can also change as you get stronger and more confident.

So rather than worrying about getting every movement perfect, it can be more useful to focus on moving well for you, building your capacity and gradually progressing.
Perfect isn’t the goal. Progress is. 💪

You might notice something new outside InSync... 👀
Our new clinic signage is finally up!

It's a small change, but we're really pleased with how it looks and, hopefully, it makes us a little easier to spot when you're visiting us in Hexham.

A big thank you to Instilled for bringing the InSync branding to life and to Top Signs Ltd for the printing and signage. 🙏

New sign outside, same InSync team and the same approach inside. 💚
What do you think of the new look?

Should you run through pain?
Sometimes you can. Sometimes it’s a sign that something needs changing.

The difficult part is knowing which is which.
Rather than judging a run purely on whether you felt pain, it can be useful to look at the bigger picture:

• What does the pain feel like?
• Does it change as you run?
• Does it alter how you’re moving?
• What happens afterwards?
• And how do you feel the next morning?

Your response over time can tell you a lot about how well you’re currently tolerating your running load.

You don’t necessarily have to stop running at the first sign of discomfort. Equally, pushing through worsening pain isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes a small adjustment to distance, pace, training load or recovery is enough.
And if you’re not sure what’s appropriate for you, that’s where an individual assessment can be useful.
