Welcome to the teaching team Brad 🫡

Lots of you have already had Brad teaching here and there, and we can all agree he’s doing an incredible job!

Brad has been with the academy since 2024 and, from the minute he walked through the door, he’s practically lived here! If the doors are open, Brad is here, and it shows!

His attention to detail and depth of understanding are second to none, and we just know he’s going to do a great job helping us maintain the high standards of Spartans for many more years to come.

Ellie Hurst – 3rd Dan 🥋 I asked Ellie on grading day, “What keeps you coming back? Why do you keep training and grading?”

Aside from the expected answer of enjoying the sport, Ellie used words such as family and home.

Ellie has been part of the academy for 13 of its 16 years, and there aren’t many members who don’t know who Ellie is. Most will have trained alongside her, been coached by her or even taught by her, and all know what a fantastic martial artist she is!

Having loved my own kickboxing and martial arts journey, from week-in, week-out lessons, to competition days and overseas tournaments, hearing words like Ellie’s are all I’ve ever wanted from the academy.

To be part of everyone’s life stages, and to always be “home” whenever you’re in town. 🙏🏼

Getting your black belt at 54 years old, because why not?
As Christie shared with our examiners on grading day, he’s always been part of a team, the wins, the losses, all shared with a team.

This is one thing he’s done and achieved entirely for himself. Ten years of training in total to get to this point, and what a moment it was!

Christie is an extremely valuable member of the dojo. Having been here since his kids started, before eventually taking up the challenge himself, he is an infectious and impactful member who makes every other member feel valued and included.

He’s always cheering others on and making people feel welcome. The dojo simply wouldn’t be the same without him!

Well done, mate! What an example to set for anyone who says it can’t be done! 👏🏽

Tomorrow, 8 more students take to the mats for a gruelling Black Belt grading, with one student also going for their 3rd Dan.

Martial arts is always referred to as a journey, and it really is a journey. Something that, when you look back, you see the years and hours that have gone into this moment and beyond should people choose.

Everyone remembers the day they got their Black Belt, and I know this is a day that these guys will remember for years to come.

Well over 700 hours have gone into this moment for our 1st Degree students. 700+ hours of training, repetition, learning, failing, improving and not giving in.

We are wishing you all the luck in the world for tomorrow. A Spartan Black Belt is no easy thing to gain, just ask the others 😄

Now go and give it absolutely everything you've got.

This weekend, another 8 students will be assessed for their Black Belts, 6 to 10 years in the making.

Something that very few achieve. Something that is down to them, and them alone.

The week-in, week-out training. The pursuit of excellence, even when it’s boring. Repeating side kicks for the 1,000th time because they’re just not sharp enough!

Each of them deciding not to give in, even when they’ve wanted to. And believe me they have wanted to!

All of it comes down to this Saturday.

Allow me to re-introduce myself 👉🏻 I’m the founder and owner of Spartans Kickboxing Academy. I’m a 5th Dan and former 4 x World and 4 x European Champion (from the days where we travelled the world and titles were nothing more than a simple neck medal).
I’m the creator of exemplary black belts, fighters and martial artists. My school is a school of old-school values, standards, with emphasis on detail and technique.
I am the courage, accountability and truthsayer people seek, the hype (wo)man in the corner, and the ear to offload to.
I’m the organiser of fight nights and opportunities for all our students, regardless of age and ability.
I’ve spent 27 years participating in, practising and coaching this sport and have absolutely 0 plans of quitting anytime soon.
I like to think that, out of the hundreds of students that have come through our door over the last 16 years, they have nothing but respect for the sport, memories they’ll carry for life, and a little bit of Spartans standards and self belief in them no matter how long they were with us
