Theatretrain Hitchin Empowering kids to grow in confidence and perform on professional stages for over 30 years

Theatretrain provides Professional Training in the Performing Arts for young people aged 4 - 18. Working as a team our weekly drama, dance and singing classes are fun, build confidence and develop the imagination. As the company that loves to perform we provide many opportunities for ALL our pupils to perform in our local, regional and West End shows. Our classes of acting, singing and dancing are taught in age groups 6-9, 9-12 and 13-18. Our curriculum provides a step by step understanding of the performing arts and previous experience isn't necessary. We have high expectations of our pupils and we ask for energy, enthusiasm and commitment in the work. Our teachers are experienced professionals chosen for their experience and enthusiasm.

One thing I've learnt after years of teaching children is that the ones who make the most progress aren't usually the ones who get everything right first time.

They're the ones who are willing to have another go.
To make a mistake.
To laugh about it.
And then try again.

I think we sometimes forget how brave it is for a child to put their hand up when they're not sure of the answer.

To sing out when they don't know if they're in tune.
To step forward when every part of them wants to stay at the back.
Those little moments of courage might not seem like much...
But they add up.

One day they're nervous about trying.
A few months later they're encouraging someone else to be brave.

That's one of my favourite transformations to watch.

One sentence in this review really stood out to me.

"It has given her confidence in life."

That's what we're hoping for.

Yes, we want children to enjoy singing, dancing and drama.

But we also hope they leave with something much bigger.
Confidence to speak up.
Confidence to have a go.
Confidence to believe in themselves.

Today is World Gratitude Day.

One thing I'm grateful for is getting to watch children grow.

The child who arrives hiding behind Mum and a few months later walks confidently into class on their own.

The student who barely speaks at first and gradually finds their voice.

The friendships that form between children who might never have met otherwise.

Those moments never get old.

So today, I'm grateful for our students, our families, our teachers and everyone who makes Theatretrain what it is.

Thank you for trusting us with your children each week.

And thank you to TT Ted, who has helped more nervous children settle into class than I can count. ๐Ÿงธโค๏ธ

Not every child is going to love the same activities.

And that's probably a good thing.

Over the years, I've spoken to lots of parents whose child had tried several clubs before finding one that felt right.

The activity itself wasn't the problem.

The fit was.

Some children jump into new situations without a second thought.

Others need a little more time.

Some love being centre stage.

Others prefer being part of a team.

Neither approach is wrong.

I've written a new article about why choosing activities based on who your child already is can be far more powerful than choosing them based on who you hope they'll become.

Because confidence often grows when children feel comfortable enough to be themselves.

How do you know if your child is becoming more confident?

Most parents look for changes at school.

Putting a hand up.

Speaking up more.

Joining in.

But what if confidence shows up somewhere else first?

A child talking more at the dinner table.

Mentioning a new friend by name.

Being willing to try something they would have avoided before.

One thing parents often tell me is that the first signs of growing confidence don't happen where they expected.

They happen at home.

There's one child every Saturday...

Before we've even unlocked the doors, they're there.

Bag on their shoulder.

Big smile on their face.

Ready to come in.

I always smile when I see them.

Because there's something really special about a child who can't wait to get started.

A few years ago, they might have been the child feeling nervous about walking through the door.

Now they're the one reminding everyone else it's nearly time.

It's one of those little moments that probably doesn't seem very important.

But after all these years, I've learnt it's often the little moments that tell you the biggest stories.

Most parents probably assume we're watching the child at the front.
The one singing the loudest.
The one who seems the most confident.

But honestly...
It's often the quieter children we're watching most closely.
The child who usually hangs back but joins in one exercise.
The new student who's starting to relax and chat to the person next to them.
The child who's giving something a proper go, even though it doesn't come naturally yet.

Those are the moments we talk about after class.

Of course we notice great performances.

But they're not the conversations that stay with us.

Instead, you'll hear things like:
"He really came out of his shell today."
"She settled in so much quicker this week."
"Did you see how much more confident they looked?"

For us, a successful session is about children growing in confidence, encouraging each other and having the courage to give something a go.

Those are the moments that make us drive home smiling.

One of the nicest compliments we receive isn't about the shows or the performances.

It's when a parent says,
"It just feels so welcoming here."

That always makes me smile.

Because creating that feeling doesn't happen by accident.

It's the teachers greeting children by name.

The Welcome Ambassadors looking after someone who's new.

The older students saying hello to the younger ones.

The conversations with parents at the door.

All of those little moments add up to something much bigger.

I think every child deserves to walk into a place where they feel noticed, supported and happy to be themselves.

That's the atmosphere we've worked hard to create at Theatretrain, and it's something I'm incredibly proud of.
