Match Report: Slazenger Development Team - Abbeydale Away Day 💚🏑

Final Result: Sheffield 1 – 2 Slazenger Devs

A really enjoyable away game for the Slazenger Development team coming away from Abbeydale with a 2–1 win after a competitive game against Sheffield. 💚🏑

After a delayed start, Sheffield caught us early to take a 1–0 lead, but Slaz settled into the game with some fantastic defensive work. Gemma S commanded the back line with total composure, Georgie held her line against a rapid winger, and Katie sparked our right-flank attacks with sharp cross-D interceptions. Our Ninja Nikolai was always ready for any opposition shots coming his way!

In the 2nd quarter, our press clicked into gear. Amelie and Etta worked hard in midfield, while Etta teamed up with Amelia to track back and break up a dangerous 3-on-1 counter. Gemma W added some vital stability when stepping into defence, allowing Katie to push up the pitch.
Then came the equaliser! The team earnt a short corner, and a well practiced short corner, saw Matthew inject to Noah, who played a clever pass inside for Amelia to finish.

The 3rd quarter saw plenty of pressure from Slaz. Alistair and Noah were driving into the D and winning short corners, while Harry — our youngest player on the pitch — put in an absolute masterclass! Harry repeatedly channelled and disrupted Sheffield's older, more experienced players to break up their attacks.

With 4 minutes left in the 4th, Alistair turned his defender inside to win another short corner. A lightning-fast zip injection set up Amelia to for her second of the day.
Sheffield pushed hard late on, but some great flat-stick tackles and smart game management saw us hold on until the final whistle. Shout out to the Sheffield GK who was playing his first game as goalkeeper - pulling off some great saves!

Huge shoutout to the whole squad for a brilliant team effort, and speedy recovery to Ollie after pulling his hamstring! 👴🏻

🏆 Player of the match was a five way tie - which showed the total team effort today. Well done Alistair, Amelie, Georgie, Noah and Amelia!

Match Report: Slazengers Development Team – First Game of the Season 💚🏑

Slazengers opened their first development fixture of the season with a confident and composed performance, blending new talent with seasoned experience to secure a 3–1 victory over Barnsley.

Quarter 1
Debutants Harry R and Freddie W slotted in brilliantly as Slaz made a strong start against a very tall Barnsley side… it must be the great teas! 👀 More on that later…

Play moved end-to-end early on, but Slaz defended a short corner superbly, with Noah clearing fearlessly. Minutes later, a Slaz short corner, injected by captain Georgie, was finished clinically by Noah to make it 1–0.

Alistair was a constant threat down the right wing, showing that none of his skills have been lost over the summer break! His pace and attacking runs kept Barnsley’s defence busy and created plenty of opportunities for Slaz.

Strong runs from Freddie and Cerys added to the pressure, while Georgie, Katie, Harry S and Harry R worked brilliantly as a defensive unit. All four made some excellent, well-timed tackles and interceptions throughout the game, helping to break up attacks and turn defence into attack.

Quarter 2
An early short corner saw shots from Noah and Cerys saved, but Slaz kept pushing. Freddie’s drive into the D earned another short, although Barnsley defended well.

Persistent pressure eventually paid off when Matthew forced the ball over the line after some determined battling from Freddie, Darcie and Cerys.

The forward line of Matthew, Cerys and Darcie were relentless throughout, particularly whenever Slaz lost possession. They worked hard to put immediate pressure back on Barnsley, often winning the ball back quickly and giving Slazengers another opportunity to attack.

Harry S also showed plenty of positive intent with some great runs forward, while Georgie, Katie, Harry S and Harry R continued to make important tackles and interceptions at the back.

Darcie later struck the bar with a powerful shot… was this a sign of things to come?! 👀

Quarter 3
Alistair’s strong run earned an early short corner, which Darcie converted to make it 3–0.

Barnsley responded with a strong spell of pressure, threatening in the D, but the Slaz defence stayed organised. Harry R, Harry S, Georgie and Katie all made well-timed challenges at important moments, helping to break up attacks and keep Slaz on the front foot.

Darcie sent another shot across the face of goal and then things then took a turn for Mark, who earned himself a green card and a two-minute sit down to have a little think about his behaviour! 😂

Naturally, this outstanding contribution has earned Mark the prestigious Donut of the Day award. 🍩😂

Quarter 4
The final quarter was more balanced with the Slaz team juniors playing without adult support. Slaz created chances through crosses from Matthew and Freddie but couldn’t quite convert, while a late Slaz short corner also went unfinished.

Barnsley earned a final short corner in the dying seconds and managed to score a goal before the final whistle blew.

Full Time: Slazengers 3–1 Barnsley 🎉

A fantastic first development game from Slazengers, with clean, composed hockey throughout. There were plenty of positives to take, with every player contributing to a brilliant team effort.

Freddie was fantastic throughout, making some really positive runs and putting in some great tackles. A thoroughly deserved Player of the Match! 👏💚

And the real highlight… teas of champions at the end of a mysterious single-track lane into a business park ending at Nailmaker Brewing Co for CHIP BUTTIES! 🥪😂 10/10.

What a fantastic day for our Slaz U8s at the Leeds Adel HC Tournament! 💚🏑☀️

For so many of our players, this was their very first hockey tournament, and wow… they certainly didn't disappoint! Both teams played with incredible spirit, determination and teamwork, showing exactly what being part of Slaz is all about. We couldn't be prouder.

💚 The Bears 🐻

Captained brilliantly by Heidi, the Bears worked tirelessly for one another throughout the day. George was everywhere on the pitch, dominating play from start to finish. A huge congratulations to Alfie, who scored his first ever match goal – hopefully the first of many! 🎉

Isobel was like a little terrier on the wing, making tackle after tackle before driving forward into attack. Alana's confidence grew with every game, while little brother Logan even enjoyed a special cameo appearance! Trixie may have been the smallest player on the pitch, but she certainly wasn't intimidated, getting stuck into every challenge. And finally, Oscar, who has only been playing hockey for a few weeks, was simply outstanding, producing some brilliantly timed tackles and confident clearances.

The Bears finished a fantastic 4th place, with a mixture of results but plenty of smiles, laughter and, of course, sweets at the end! 🍬

💚 The Armadillos 🦔

Captain Dylan led by example all day, scoring into double figures (we hear a payout is due! 💰😂). Evelyn was rock solid in defence, making countless well-timed tackles and clearances. Miller impressed with spells in both defence and midfield, and it was wonderful to see his confidence continue to grow throughout the tournament.

Ethel (and her fabulous strawberry socks 🍓) and Lucy never stopped working despite the soaring temperatures. Bea and Edward, two of our younger players, both gave everything for the team, with Edward getting himself on the scoresheet with 4 goals and Bea coming agonisingly close to her first tournament goal.

The Armadillos enjoyed a superb tournament, winning many of their matches to finish joint top of the league alongside Leeds Adel. Nothing could separate the two teams—they had the same points, the same goals scored, the same goals conceded, and had drawn their league match against each other. A final deciding game was played for the trophy, but after another closely contested battle ended 0-0, both teams were delighted to be crowned joint winners. 🏆🏆

A huge thank you to all of our parents for your fantastic support throughout the day, to Matthew and Alfie H for managing the teams, and to Leeds Adel HC for hosting such a brilliantly organised tournament.

Days like today are what junior hockey is all about—learning, growing in confidence, making friends and creating memories. We are so proud of every single one of you. 💚🏑

We are so incredibly proud of Tilda who was selected to play for u13 Girls North East Regional Hockey Squad this season! 🩷🩵

This season has been exceptional for Tilda, she started the season playing Devs and then joined our as soon as she turned 13 💥
