Meaningful Care Matters

As part of our Butterfly Project culture change work, we invited team members to create different ways to represent people’s life stories.

Ann at Ballinasloe CNU has produced a beautiful box for a woman she supports - with dogs, a real cigarette and even a tea cup on top! Ann said she found out some new things as part of the process and enjoyed doing it.

This simple statement challenges us to think differently about the way we provide care.
What are the everyday tasks that pull us away from spending time with people? Could those same tasks become opportunities for conversation, connection and shared purpose?
Many of us work in cultures where completing visible tasks is recognised and measured. But what about the less visible moments that matter just as much? A reassuring smile. Sitting together over a cup of tea. Listening to someone's worries. Sharing a laugh.
Physical care is essential, but emotional wellbeing deserves the same attention. After all, people may forget what we did for them, but they rarely forget how we made them feel.
It also raises an important question for recruitment. How do we identify people who will naturally take time to notice, nurture and respond to another person's emotional needs?

We are proud to have again earned the highest distinction for our approach to caring for people living with dementia in hospital.

In 2023 we became the first-ever acute care hospital in the world to implement and receive accreditation in The Butterfly Approach at Brampton Civic's Acute Care of
the Elderly (ACE) Unit.

This year’s reaccreditation by Meaningful Care Matters recognizes the ACE Unit’s continued commitment to sustaining an environment where patients living with dementia receive individualized, dignified and compassionate care.

Isn’t it wonderful to find a beautiful book to enjoy, especially when it relates to a topic you are interested in? Developing a good collection of things to read is part of creating a true sense of home.
This woman who lives at The The Elliott Community in used to volunteer helping others learn to read and still finds joy in reading a good book herself!

Merlin Park Community Nursing Units in are developing a better range of mugs to improve on the beige beakers. Do you prefer a mug or a cup? Are people able to put their own milk and sugar in their tea or coffee?

When you are 100 years old and living in a care home, you don’t expect to win a prize weekend away and be able to go for it!

Huntington House Huntington & Langham Estate has recently achieved an Outstanding Dragonfly Approach Re-Accreditation. Opportunities to go outside to the wonderful gardens and grounds are part of daily life in the home, and there is an active Gardening Club supported by two keen, green-fingered team members.
