Double game day incoming!

After quite a lot scrambling, about 200 WhatsApp messages, and quite a few emails and calls... we have an A team game on.

Our thanks to Woodhouse Warriors for coming across to play us, and to the league for allocating us a referee despite the current challenges.

Please note the earlier kick-off of 1pm for this game.

Special mention too to the other teams who tried to help us get an A team fixture, and in particular to Heworth, who were ready to host us.

We've built some great contacts this week and hope to be able to get a regular schedule in over the coming months.

As already announced, the first team are over at King Cross Park for a crucial NCRL Yorkshire A clash (2.30pm).

Best of luck to all the lads in action, and thank you to everybody who's playing their part in the two games this weekend, on or off the field.

After a couple of weeks off, the boys are back this weekend with a tricky game away at King Cross Park. ⚔️

It's another tough test of our ambitions, and we know all about the threat posed following three tough games against them last year.

We're also looking to book in an A team game. Stay tuned for details!

Congratulations to our very own Dave Pawson, who shrugged off the sore ribs to play his part in today's match in memory of Lucas Frances aka "Carrot".

A great turn out for a well respected young man, who was taken too soon. ♥️

📰 First team match report

After snatching second place last week, Mirfield Spartans secured their place in the top two with arguably their best performance of the season on Saturday.

We ran in six tries to overcome a previously unbeaten Keighley Albion side to extend our own unbeaten run to seven games.

Lewis Toner grabbed the headlines with another hat-trick of tries, but his contributions tell only a small part of our story as Spartans players across the park delivered exceptional displays.

After sticking in the arm wrestle early in the contest, we took the lead when superb footwork from Lewis Boye carved out an opportunity for Logan Sykes on the right wing, before left winger Dylan Waterworth added a second when Keighley failed to clear the danger at the kick.

We then went back-to-back with a try straight from the kick-off, as James Willcock smashed through on the kick return before finding the supporting Toner, who had the pace to beat the covering defenders.

We then made it four unanswered tries after forcing the error with aggressive defence near the Keighley line.

Kian Morgan orchestrated a flowing move from the scrum, while Toner timed his run perfectly to squeeze over inside the corner flag.

Howevever, with all four conversions missed, the contest was still far from over, and Albion gave us something to think about with a smart one-on-one steal at the kick-off that saw them get off the mark with a converted try.

The first score of the second period would be crucial, and it went our way after a training ground move sent Kian through in midfield, and Toner was once again the man on the spot to collect the pass and finish.

Again the kick was missed, but Spartans made sure of victory when Waterworth crossed on the left edge from a neat hands play, making it 24-6 with time firmly against our visitors.

Albion did have some pressure of their own in the second half, but they also saw two-men sin-binned as frustrations boiled over, which made it harder for them to add to their tally.

The win sees us move onto 13 points, two clear of Albion, but having played a game more.

We’d like to thank our opponents for making the trip across and wish them well for the weeks to come.

Thank you to the referee, the coaches and the volunteers who make match days happen.

No first team games scheduled these next two weeks, but keep your eyes peeled for A team fixture details.

"Look for your full-back...he's found him! Is he gonna finish? He normally does...he normally does finish...and he has done, Simmo! Wow, what a try!"

Three more for Toner on Saturday, taking him to 1️⃣7️⃣ for the season, and clear as the top try scorer across all National and Regional Conference Leagues.
