📰 First team match report

Mirfield Spartans bounced back from last week’s defeat with a hard-earned win over Newsome Panthers that keeps our campaign going another week.

Defeat for Spartans on Saturday would have effectively ended our play-off interests, but the victory against our local rivals means we head up to Dalton this Saturday with every chance of reaching the last eight.

The win was made all the more special due to the fact we once again did it tough, and were without several first team regulars, while others continued to pull a shirt on while carrying knocks.

But two tries in the first half put us in a commanding position, as we bucked recent trends to score the game’s first points and establish an early lead.

Dylan Waterworth scored after being released down the right edge, before Jordan Rice continued his good try-scoring form with another four points.

Waterworth kicked one from two, while Newsome kicked a penalty to stay in contention after tempers flared under the shadow of the Spartans posts, making it 10-2 at the break.

Playing towards the Slipper Lane end in the second half, we once again made the perfect start, winning back the short kick-off and scoring the first points.

A great drive and offload from Myles Tyrell set Josh Willcock up to burst his way through the defensive line and score a crucial try. The kick from Waterworth made it 16-2.

But back came the Panthers, who weren’t about to let us run away with the contest.

Instead the Yorkshire B side, who enjoyed a great league campaign, losing just three games all year, roared back into the game with back-to-back tries.

One of them was converted, making it 16-12 and leaving the contest on a knife edge, and with all the momentum with the visitors.

But Spartans would seal victory after repelling more Newsome pressure, as Jordan Paga wrestled his way over the line from close range for a trademark try.

Kian Morgan’s kick came back off the post, but it was academic as the referee’s whistle sounded before the restart could be taken.

Congratulations to our lads on another fantastic display, and thank you to our coaches, volunteers and supporters for their efforts and backing all year.

Well done to Newsome on a great performance and congratulations on a great campaign.

We head to Dalton on Saturday knowing that victory could put us in the quarter finals, depending on Newsome’s result at Blackbrook.

Both teams have two points from two games, but the Panthers have the better points difference.

U13s LEAGUE CHAMPIONS! 🏆

What an achievement from our U13s! We couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them.

This was their first season together, with a number of new players joining the team who had never played rugby league before. From day one, they’ve listened, learned, worked hard and put in a massive amount of effort both in training and on match days.

They’ve grown in confidence, developed as players and, most importantly, come together as a team. All that hard work has paid off in the best possible way…

A huge thank you to Luke, Smithy and Lauren for the time, commitment and encouragement they’ve given the team throughout the season. Achievements like this don’t happen without dedicated people giving up their time week after week. 💪🏻

We’d also like to say a massive thank you to all our volunteers and parents for everything you do behind the scenes travelling, supporting, helping out and cheering the lads on every step of the way. 👏🏻
